Chapter 16 — The Confession

316 Words
Serena woke slowly. Damian was still sitting beside her. “You stayed?” “Yes.” “All night?” “Yes.” She smiled. “You’re becoming soft.” “Don’t tell anyone.” She laughed. Then the room became quiet. “Damian.” “Yes?” “What did you say last night?” He froze. “What?” “When I was asleep.” “You were dreaming.” “I heard you.” Damian looked away. Serena sat up. “Say it again.” He stared at her. “I love you.” Her heart stopped. Damian took her hand. “I didn’t plan it.” She smiled through tears. “Neither did I.” He leaned closer. Their lips met in a gentle kiss. When they pulled apart, Serena rested her forehead against his. “What happens now?” Damian smiled faintly. “Now we find the truth.” ⸻ Later that day, Damian received a message from his security team. They had found Victor Hale. He was alive. And he had been living under another name for twenty years. Damian immediately stood. “Where is he?” “An old property outside the city.” Damian looked at Serena. “You stay here.” “No.” “Serena—” “I’m coming with you.” “This could be dangerous.” “So could staying here.” Damian knew she was right. He reached for her hand. “Then stay beside me.” She nodded. Together, they left the mansion. Neither noticed the woman standing across the street. Elena watched them leave. She made a phone call. “They found Victor.” A man’s voice answered. “Then we have a problem.” Elena smiled. “No.” She looked toward Damian’s car. “We have a bigger problem.” “What?” “He loves her.”
