Chapter 17 — Victor Hale

339 Words
The old property stood far from the city. Damian’s security team surrounded the building. Serena stayed close to him. They entered together. An elderly man stood near the window. He turned. His eyes immediately widened. “Damian Cross.” Damian stopped. “Victor Hale.” Victor sighed. “I knew this day would come.” “You destroyed my family.” Victor shook his head. “No.” Damian stepped forward. “Then tell me who did.” Victor looked at Serena. “The Bennetts and the Crosses were both victims.” Serena’s heart raced. “Victims of who?” Victor hesitated. “Damian’s father.” Silence. Damian’s face became pale. “My father?” “He wasn’t the only one.” Victor reached into a drawer and removed an old file. “The money was stolen by someone working for your father.” “Who?” Victor looked directly at him. “Your father’s business partner.” “Why?” “Because he wanted control of the company.” Damian’s hands tightened. “And the fire?” Victor looked down. “That was meant to destroy the evidence.” Serena whispered, “My father was there.” “Yes.” “Why did he survive?” “Because he went back inside to save your mother.” Damian stared at Victor. “My mother?” Victor nodded. “Your mother knew the truth.” Damian stepped backward. “All these years…” “I tried to tell your father,” Victor said. “But he threatened me.” Damian looked at the documents. “Why didn’t you come forward?” Victor looked tired. “Because I was afraid.” Suddenly, the lights went out. Serena grabbed Damian’s hand. “What happened?” A loud crash came from outside. Damian immediately pulled Serena behind him. “Stay behind me.” Footsteps approached. Then a gunshot echoed outside. Serena screamed. Damian held her tightly. “Don’t move.” Another shot. Then silence. Damian looked toward the door. Someone had arrived.
