Chapter 7 — The Secret
The next morning, Damian barely spoke during breakfast.
Serena noticed.
He looked distracted, as if something was bothering him.
Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore.
“Damian.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“I want to know what happened twenty years ago.”
His expression immediately hardened.
“I told you to stay out of it.”
“And I told you that I’m part of this now.”
Damian placed his cup down.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking.”
“Then explain it to me.”
He stood.
“I have work.”
Serena watched him leave.
She knew he was hiding something.
And she wasn’t going to stop until she discovered what it was.
⸻
That afternoon, Damian drove to his parents’ house.
His father was sitting in his study when Damian entered.
“You’re here early.”
“I need answers.”
His father looked up.
“About what?”
“Richard Bennett.”
The room became silent.
Damian’s father slowly put down his newspaper.
“Why are you asking about him?”
“Because I married his daughter.”
His father’s expression changed.
“You did what?”
“Serena Bennett is my wife.”
His father stood.
“End that marriage.”
Damian frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the Bennetts destroyed this family once. Don’t let them do it again.”
Damian stared at him.
“What exactly did Richard do?”
His father looked away.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.”
“You were a child.”
“I was old enough to remember my mother crying.”
His father said nothing.
Damian stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.”
His father finally looked at him.
“Your mother and Richard Bennett were business partners.”
“I know.”
“There was money involved.”
“What money?”
His father hesitated.
Then he said,
“Money that disappeared.”
Damian’s eyes narrowed.
“And you blamed Richard?”
“We had proof.”
“What proof?”
His father looked away again.
“Leave this alone, Damian.”
Damian realized something.
His father wasn’t telling him everything.
⸻
When Damian returned home that evening, Serena was waiting for him.
“You found something.”
He stopped.
“How do you know?”
“Because you look like someone who just discovered that everything he believed might be wrong.”
Damian stared at her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then his phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG ENEMY.
Damian’s face changed.
Another message arrived.
THE BENNETTS DIDN’T DESTROY YOUR FAMILY.
Then a third.
ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.
Damian slowly lowered his phone.
Serena watched him.
“What happened?”
He looked at her.
For the first time, Damian didn’t know what to say.
