Serena refused to speak to Damian during the drive home.
He noticed.
“You’re angry.”
“I’m confused.”
“About Elena?”
“Yes.”
Damian kept his eyes on the road.
“She was someone I knew years ago.”
“Did you love her?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Serena looked at him.
“Then why did she speak as if she knew everything about you?”
“Because she does.”
Serena’s heart skipped.
“What does that mean?”
Damian didn’t answer.
When they arrived home, Serena went straight to her room.
But she couldn’t sleep.
At midnight, she heard footsteps.
She opened her door.
Damian was walking toward his study.
“Damian.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Tell me the truth.”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know which truth you’re asking for.”
“Everything.”
He remained silent.
Then he said,
“I don’t know if I can trust the people who raised me.”
Serena’s eyes widened.
“What?”
“My father may have lied to me.”
“About your family?”
“Yes.”
“And my father?”
“Possibly.”
Serena stepped closer.
“Then what happens to our contract?”
Damian looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
For the first time, he sounded afraid.

Later that night, Damian entered his father’s old storage room.
He searched through boxes for hours.
Finally, he found an old file.
CROSS-BENNETT PARTNERSHIP — CONFIDENTIAL
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a document.
There was a signature.
Richard Bennett.
But below it was another signature.
His father’s.
Damian frowned.
Then he noticed something.
The dates didn’t match the story he had been told.
Someone had altered the documents.
