Chapter Three

Morning came quietly to Blood Crescent Park—but beneath the calm, tension coiled like a waiting strike. Raya moved through the pack grounds with purpose. Heads turned as she passed. They always did. Ashen-blonde hair fell in soft waves down her back, catching the early sunlight like pale fire. Her amber eyes—sharp, calculating, unmistakably powerful—missed nothing. She carried herself with the kind of confidence that wasn’t taught, only inherited… and earned. Liam’s sister. A warrior. A future Luna. And if things went the way she intended— Kael’s Luna. A small smile curved her lips at the thought. It had been a long time coming. Too long. She slowed as voices drifted toward her from behind one of the larger cabins, low and hushed—but not quiet enough. “…I’m just saying, have you ever actually seen him shift?” Raya stopped. Her expression didn’t change, but her ears sharpened, every word locking into place. “No,” another voice replied, softer, uncertain. “But that doesn’t mean anything. He’s the Alpha.” “Exactly,” the first one said. “He should be shifting. Leading hunts. Running with the pack under the full moon. But he doesn’t.” A pause. Then— “It’s strange.” Raya’s fingers curled slightly at her sides. “Maybe he just prefers not to,” the second girl added quickly, though doubt still laced her tone. “Or maybe—” The rest of the sentence died in her throat. Because Raya had stepped into view. Silence fell instantly. The two females stiffened, their faces draining of color as her gaze landed on them—cold, sharp, and unmistakably threatening. Raya didn’t need to raise her voice. Didn’t need to growl. Her presence alone was enough. Amber eyes locked onto them, unblinking. Daring. Challenging. Continue. Neither of them did. “Raya,” one of them managed, her voice suddenly tight. “We were just—” “Talking,” Raya finished smoothly. The word held no warmth. Only warning. The air grew heavy, suffocating under the weight of her stare. She took a slow step forward, then another, each movement deliberate, controlled. “Funny,” she continued, tilting her head slightly. “Because it sounded more like gossip.” Neither wolf spoke. Smart. Raya’s gaze flickered between them, her lips curving into something that almost resembled a smile—but didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Let me make something clear,” she said softly. That softness was far more dangerous than anger. “The Alpha’s choices… are not yours to question.” A beat of silence. “And his strength,” she added, her voice dropping just enough to send a chill down their spines, “is not something you want to test.” The message landed exactly as intended. Fear flashed across their faces. Submission followed. “We understand,” they said quickly. Raya held their gaze for a moment longer—just long enough to remind them who they were speaking to—before giving a slight, dismissive wave of her hand. “Good.” That was all it took. They didn’t wait. The two females turned and hurried off, their earlier confidence completely gone. Raya watched them leave, her expression unreadable for a brief second. Then— She smiled. Slow. Certain. Satisfied. Let them talk. Let them wonder. It didn’t matter. Because soon… none of it would. She turned, continuing her walk through the pack grounds, her steps lighter now, her mood lifted. They didn’t understand. None of them did. But she did. She saw what others couldn’t. Kael wasn’t weak. He was… different. And that difference only made him more powerful in her eyes. More hers. Her smile deepened slightly. For years, she had waited. Watched from a distance. Desired without reaching. Because Kael Draven wasn’t a man you approached lightly. He kept his distance from everyone—especially females. Cold. Untouchable. Uninterested. Many had tried. All had failed. But Raya wasn’t like the others. She wasn’t weak. She wasn’t forgettable. And she certainly wasn’t someone Kael could ignore forever. Not anymore. Her thoughts drifted to the previous night, to the quiet shift in his behavior—subtle, but there. A crack in the walls he had built so carefully around himself. He was changing. Finally. And she knew exactly what that meant. He’s giving in. Her heart beat a little faster at the thought, excitement curling warmly in her chest. It was only a matter of time now. The pack needed stability. Needed a Luna. Needed an heir. And Kael— Whether he admitted it or not— Needed her. Raya lifted her chin slightly, her gaze sweeping across the territory with quiet confidence. Everything was aligning perfectly. The restless pack. The growing pressure. The expectations. All of it pushed him toward one inevitable choice. Toward her. “Soon,” she murmured softly, almost to herself. Very soon. Her steps slowed as she reached the edge of the central grounds, her eyes flickering briefly toward the path that led deeper into the forest. Toward him. A knowing smile touched her lips. “You won’t be able to refuse me much longer, Kael,” she whispered. Not with everything at stake. Not with the pack watching. Not with the future hanging in the balance. Raya exhaled slowly, savoring the certainty settling within her. This wasn’t hope. It wasn’t wishful thinking. It was inevitability. And when the time came— When he finally turned to her— She would be ready. After all… She had always known one truth above all else. Kael Draven was hers. He just didn’t know it yet.
