Dane told the two men to leave when they were done in his study. He had more questions, but kept them to himself. The mage wouldn't know, and Andre didn't know anything.
They were to meet by daytime to discuss more about this development. He didn't want to fall asleep. There was too much to think about. He wanted to assume she'd reincarnated, but it sounded impossible. Kaia and Maia… he didn't know what to think… how to feel.
Dane walked out of his study to his dark bedroom. He tried to relax on a chair, eyes closed, memories flowing.
The only sound in the room and the source of light was the soft crackle of the fire burning. Even the moonlight wasn't allowed to peek in.
He was remembering. It was dark. There was blood everywhere and panic. So much of everything was mixed so that his head hurt.
“I'll always love you. I hope you know that."
“I'll kill everyone who had a hand in your death," he swore.
“No," she gasped. “D-don’t do anything rash. I dreamed of this… I have to die for a purpose.”
"The visions are wrong!” he protested.
Her smile was as gentle as her voice as she kept speaking. “I'm not going to be dead. We'll meet again. You'll see… I promise.”
He blinked his eyes, now in the present.
He shook off the memories and stood up. He really needed to see Kaia right now.
Dane stormed through the castle. He didn't want to sit with his memories anymore. She was the only one who could give him some answers, especially considering what the mage had said.
When he reached her room, there was a maid who stood by the door. She had a really nervous expression on her face.
"Where is she?" Dane asked, his patience wearing thin.
“She… left,” the maid answered, fearful.
He felt himself get angrier.
The maid curtsied hastily. "I think she might be in… Maia's room,"
Dane said nothing. His expression gave off nothing, but he still felt like breaking something.
He strode towards the familiar room, his mind wandering about what she was doing there. And how she even entered.
It was always locked. No one but he and Isabel had access to it. That was for a reason. He walked in and paused, his eyes on Kaia, who didn't move at the sound of the door being opened. She was staring at Maia's portrait.
The sight of her in Maia's space made him uncomfortable. Angry.
“What the hell are you doing?" he thundered, his voice booming through the room. “How dare you come in here? This isn't your room. Get out!”
Kaia didn't move for a moment, but she snapped out of whatever trance she was in, frightened for a moment, before having some confidence in her stance as he got closer.
"She looks exactly like me. You knew that,” Kaia said, glancing back at the portrait. Dane’s frown deepened. "That doesn't give you the right to just come in here.”
The mage had told him that with the weird looks she was getting, she'd likely get curious and ask questions. But he never said she'd unlock Maia's room! Even though she had Maia's face and the words the mage told him, Dane still didn't think they were the same person.
His mate was dead, and the woman who now stood in her room was an intruder. She needed to leave.
“Get out," he growled, furious.
She faced him, obviously angry. “I deserve to know the truth about her. About myself,” she spoke. "And you can't say we simply resemble. Everyone keeps looking at me weirdly. Even you! And I know you know what's going on!”
Dane tried to calm himself. “Leave. Now," he growled, walking towards her.
Nobody noticed the lit candles flickering furiously, nor the movement of the mirrors as they faced each other. Kaia wasn't deterred, and that pissed Dane off more.
“I'm not leaving. I came into a foreign land and found out that I looked exactly like the people's dead queen. Said queen obviously isn't a simple person, considering how mad you are.” She continued, angry, "I was kept in the dark back home, I'm not letting you control me here, too!"
Dane was both surprised and angry at her audacity. “I'll control you however I want till I get my answers, and you will obey," he declared, gritting his teeth.
“I'm the ruler. You may be queen, but you're still under my authority.”
Kaia didn't seem intimidated. For some reason, she had a burst of confidence after staying in this room.
“I'm not going to follow your rules when I can feel her memories. I can see them. I can feel everything that has to do with her, and I'm not leaving till I get answers.”
Dane hated when he wasn't being obeyed. There was only one person he let get away with it.
And it wasn't her.
He stomped closer to grab her arm in a tight grip.
“Let go!" she demanded.
"I told you that you don't have a say in here.”
He dragged her towards the door.
She tried hard to get out of his tight grip, obviously furious as she cursed at him. “Let me go!" she screamed.
Her voice echoed off the walls of the castle, and Dane was sure a lot of people heard. But he didn't care.
The lights were flickering on and off as the tension increased. The mirrors had signs of cracking, and there seemed to be a rush of wind in the air. Neither of the two paid attention.
Suddenly, Kaia felt an intense pain in her head. So painful she felt like her head was being hit.
Dane watched in surprise as her ears started bleeding, but he wasn't able to do anything as she let out a piercing scream.
The cracking mirrors suddenly shattered, and the shards of glass flew everywhere as the light went off.
