Chapter Six – The Price Of One Night Naomi’s ears rang inside the sleek car, her body pressed against the leather seat, Damian’s declaration still echoing like a gunshot in her head. Wife. Her mind reeled. She stared at him, at the ruthless elegance of his profile, the sharp jaw, the cold certainty in his eyes. This wasn’t the man she thought she had met at Riverton Club. This wasn’t the mysterious stranger she thought was some… some— Oh God. Her heart plummeted. The call boy. She had paid him. She had shoved money into his hand that night, thinking she could buy her escape, thinking he was nothing more than a beautiful mistake. And now—now the entire world knows him as Damian Scott. The Damian Scott. Billionaire CEO of Fulton Foods. Heir to the Scott Empire. A man business moguls begged months to get a meeting with, who could topple companies with a flick of his pen. And she… she had treated him like a cheap distraction. Her cheeks burned hot with shame. Embarrassment coiled in her gut until she felt sick. What had she done? What had she tangled herself into? Damian turned his head slightly, his gaze cutting into her panic. “Stop thinking so loud.” Naomi jerked her hand away from where his fingers had been resting. “You—You let me believe you were—” her voice cracked, the word too humiliating to say out loud. His lips curved faintly, though his eyes were merciless. “And you let me believe you were just another spoiled heiress looking for a distraction. We were both wrong, Naomi.” Her stomach twisted. This wasn’t a game anymore. This was survival. --- Meanwhile, the Cole mansion shook with chaos. Dorothy clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white, her eyes wide as she read the headlines. Naomi Cole is Damian Scott’s wife. Her blood ran cold. The man who had punched Marcus—breaking his nose in a single blow—wasn’t just some arrogant stranger. He was Damian Scott. She stumbled back into a chair, her lips quivering. “Father… we’re finished. We’re ruined.” Franklin paced the room like a caged beast, his face red with fury. He had humiliated Naomi publicly, stripped her of her shares, declared her an orphan and an ingrate. And now? Now the girl he had cast aside was tied to the one man in Riverton he could never afford to offend. “Impossible,” Franklin growled. “How did she—Naomi of all people—get near Damian Scott? Men twice my wealth wait months for his attention!” Dorothy’s jealousy bubbled over, hot and poisonous. “She isn’t even beautiful like me. She isn’t polished, she isn’t refined, she’s nothing. How—how could she of all people—” Her words dissolved into bitter sobs. Franklin slammed his fist against the mantle. “That foolish girl has no idea what she’s done. If Damian turns his wrath on us—” He cut himself off, rage and fear choking him. Marcus sat silently, nursing his bandaged nose, shame and resentment etched deep in his face. He didn’t speak, but inside, fury burned. Naomi had slipped away from his control, and now she belonged to a man even he feared. For the first time in years, the Coles felt powerless. They hadn’t just lost Naomi. They had made an enemy of Damian Scott. --- Back in the car, Naomi pressed a trembling hand to her forehead, her thoughts spinning. “What are you doing to me?” she whispered hoarsely. Damian’s gaze swept over her, cool and deliberate. “Protecting what’s mine.” She let out a bitter laugh, though it sounded more like a sob. “Yours? You don’t even know me.” His eyes narrowed, his voice lowering to a dangerous murmur. “I know enough. You were thrown away like trash. They humiliated you, broke you. And now they’ll regret every breath they wasted spitting on your name. Because you’re mine, Naomi. And the whole world knows it now.” Her pulse thundered in her ears. She didn’t know if she wanted to scream at him, slap him, or sink into the strange, frightening security of his words. But one thing was certain—her life as she knew it was over. Naomi Cole was no longer the unwanted daughter. She was Damian Scott’s wife. And whether it was a lie, a mistake, or fate… there was no turning back.
