He read the message from Yusuf while Naomi was on the phone with Abena.
He had been reading it when Abena called — had seen it arrive and had been processing it in the background, which was his particular mode of doing two things at once: the foreground task and the internal architecture-building that ran underneath everything else. The message was short. Yusuf was economical with language in the way that people who dealt primarily in consequential information became economical: he used exactly the words required and no others.
