Chapter 4: The Werewolf Appearance
"What was that just now?"
A member of Team D23, still shaken, tried to understand what happened.
He felt like he saw his late great-aunt. The werewolf was terrifying. The pressure from its presence made it hard to breathe.
A few moments ago, a wild beast had jumped out of the warehouse and knocked their team leader down.
The new team members froze in place.
They smelled a strong wolf-like scent mixed with ammonia.
After a minute, everyone came back to their senses. Two team members noticed a strange puddle on the ground.
"Captain!"
"Hurry, bandage him!"
They quickly grabbed their medical kits. They cleaned the captain's wound with disinfectant and wrapped it tightly with a bandage.
Soon, a medic arrived and took Li Xian away.
The team then returned to their headquarters.
——————
The headquarters of the Demon Extermination Bureau looked like a large public hospital.
The first to seventh floors were a regular hospital. The basement floors one to five were the base of the organization.
To enter the underground base, people had to take a hidden elevator from the first-floor emergency department to the eighth floor. After passing security, they could take another elevator down.
...
"Old Liu, thank you for your help."
Medic Qin, carrying the injured Li Xian, greeted Director Liu in the emergency department. Without stopping, he went straight to the bathroom.
The organization had chosen a hospital for several reasons.
It was easy to treat civilians and care for injured members.
"You all go report the situation. This new creature is probably a new kind of demon.
"The last demon we saw was ten years ago."
The staff on the eighth floor said.
The secret entrance to the underground base was in a bathroom on the eighth floor.
According to the organization's rules, injured members must pass through a scanner before entering the base.
...
"Target has completely disappeared from area J18! Requesting further instructions!"
"Search areas H14 to N31 in the city center!"
Li Bo, the commander of the West Town branch, sat in an esports chair with a Starbucks coffee. Though he was 30, he looked much older due to stress and lack of sleep.
"You’re here. Take a seat. I’ll ask you some questions soon," Li Bo said, rubbing his forehead.
Every team member wore a uniform with a camera. It recorded everything they saw and helped keep them safe.
Since the other surveillance systems were off at night, no footage was captured of how Rao Tian escaped.
The tech team had reviewed the cameras and projected the footage of Rao Tian on the large screen.
The image showed a huge, muscular gray wolf-man with glowing green eyes. Its teeth were not visible.
Blood was still on its face and claws, making it look wild and threatening.
"This is the creature that appeared tonight. It’s fast and aggressive.
"It injured one of our new team members and damaged a civilian’s car.
"Sadly, it escaped half an hour ago."
Li Bo took a sip of coffee and continued.
"It’s a werewolf. If we don’t stop it, the whole county could soon be filled with werewolves.
"We need to move the injured team member to a level one isolation room for observation. They might have been infected.
"This creature is dangerous and cunning. It has turned into a werewolf for a reason. Even among demons, it’s a rare sight.
"Everyone, listen! We are forming a special team to capture this werewolf.
"I’ve already informed higher-ups and requested support from top-level B-grade personnel.
"Alright, the meeting is over. Return to your posts..."
——————
"Achoo! Achoo! Achoo!"
Rao Tian crouched in the bathroom, holding his nose. He didn’t know he had just been scolded.
Earlier, he used his speed and agility to run through alleys. Gradually, the monsters chasing him couldn’t keep up.
Once he was sure no monsters were within a hundred meters, he went through his underground garage and returned home.
When he got to his door, he had trouble getting in. Luckily, his keys were in his pocket.
"Sigh, I’ve turned into a dog-headed man. I have no special interest in this form. I just hope I can change back.
"Let me check what I look like."
The werewolf in the mirror stared at him.
Rao Tian was easygoing and quickly accepted his new reality. After all, he had imagined being a salmon before, so becoming a werewolf wasn’t too bad.
The werewolf in the mirror was muscular, with broad shoulders and a well-proportioned body.
Its fur was gray, darker on its arms and nose. The rest of its fur wasn’t visible, but it probably matched.
Its ears were straight and sharp, twitching occasionally.
Its eyes—wolf-like eyes—were cold green, with only a little black around the pupils. They gave off a faint glow.
"So it’s not a dog-headed man; it’s a werewolf.
"This is a unique look for a werewolf. I might even become the alpha if thrown into a pack, surrounded by female wolves.
"Is this really me? I can hardly believe it."
This didn’t look like the typical infected werewolf monsters from movies. Rao Tian actually liked how he looked.
He tried to make a fierce expression.
In the mirror, the werewolf bared its teeth and glared, as if it was about to tear Rao Tian apart.
"Yeah, that’s pretty scary."
Rao Tian shook his ears and made a few silly faces in the mirror. His wounds had already healed, leaving no scars.
Even though he didn’t like dogs and usually avoided them, if he were one now, would people be afraid of being bitten?
The blood on his claws was… monster blood, the same red as human blood.
Wasn’t it supposed to be green?
At that moment, Rao Tian started thinking about what had happened. Why had he turned into this?
A wave of exhaustion hit him. It had been a long day.
He remembered that in some stories, werewolves could change back after a good night’s sleep.
"If I can’t change back, I’ll have to figure out what to do. No one would believe I’m friendly in this form."
Though a little scared, he had a gut feeling that a good sleep would return him to normal.
With that thought, he slowly took off his tight gray T-shirt and tossed it into the sink. He fixed his fur a little.
"I’ll think about it tomorrow."
He curled up on his bed, hugging his knees, and quickly fell asleep.
