Chapter 7: Inviting the Wolf Into the House “Hello, Mr. Liu. I’m from Wang Jie. I have something for Mr. Li.” Rao Tian quickly found the emergency department and greeted Director Liu politely. Director Liu was in charge of initial checks. He worked as the organization’s front desk. “Is there a reply already?” Liu muttered. “Alright, follow me.” Liu led Rao Tian into a bathroom and pressed a hidden button behind the mirror. “Boom!” A wall in the bathroom opened like a secret door, revealing an old elevator. “Please, this elevator has only two buttons.” “Thank you,” Rao Tian replied. He pressed the button labeled “8” and ignored the urge to complain. The elevator doors closed, and Liu used the mirror button to close the secret door. “There’s another door in the bathroom on your left. It leads to the basement,” Liu said. “This hospital really likes to put secret doors in bathrooms,” thought Rao Tian. “Is this the person Wang Jie recommended? I’d give him 8 out of 10 for first impressions,” Liu mumbled as he sat back down at his desk. ... Rao Tian followed Liu’s instructions and reached the basement. When he opened the door, he was surprised. The basement didn’t look like a hospital at all. It looked like a research facility. “What is this place?” Rao Tian felt excited, like he was in a new world. “Who are you? I don’t know you. You’re not supposed to be here.” A woman in her thirties stopped. She didn’t recognize him. “I’m from Wang Jie. I have something for Mr. Li.” “Oh, you’re Rao Tian, right? Wang Jie talks about you a lot. Hey, Old Li, the letter is here!” The woman remembered Rao Tian’s name from the list Wang Jie had sent. Li Bo, sitting behind his desk, adjusted his glasses and stood up. “Thanks, young man,” Li Bo said as he walked over. “Why are you still wearing sunglasses? It’s so dark here. Can you see anything?” Li Bo noticed Rao Tian’s sunglasses, even though they were in a dim, underground room. “Yeah, little brother, take them off. No one else is wearing them,” said Chen Xia, one of the team members. The workers stopped and looked at Rao Tian. “I…” Rao Tian hesitated. His eyes still looked like a wolf’s eyes. But if he didn’t take off his sunglasses, he might look suspicious. So, he finally took them off. ... As soon as Rao Tian removed his sunglasses, the room went silent. “Wait, why are your eyes that color?” Rao Tian’s eyes were a bright turquoise, glowing faintly in the dim light. “I… I went to a comic convention yesterday. I cosplayed as Lin Yeshi, a character from an anime. I’ve been busy and forgot to take out my colored contacts. “They’re stuck, so I might need to figure out how to take them out later.” Rao Tian was glad he had worn blue contacts. But after thinking about it, his explanation sounded a bit off. “Haha, Chen Xia, what are you worried about? This kid passed the security check on the eighth floor,” said a team member. The security staff on the eighth floor didn’t check Rao Tian, thanks to Wang Jie’s recommendation, but Rao Tian didn’t say anything. “Tch, I’m just looking out for the organization. If he’s fine, great,” Chen Xia muttered. Rao Tian thought to himself, If I hadn’t been careful, I’d be caught by now. ... “Do you want to become a hero?” Li Bo took the box and letter from Rao Tian, set the letter aside, and opened a box of ice dessert. “What?” Rao Tian asked. “Wang Jie talks about you often. She says you’re a good candidate for training in our organization. “Don’t worry. We’re not a scam organization. We hunt monsters.” Rao Tian wasn’t sure how to respond. He wasn’t a child. But now he realized he was with the “monsters” side. Despite being in the enemy’s base, he didn’t feel afraid. Li Bo started explaining about the monsters they hunted at night, the organization’s structure, and their work. “Is the ‘demon’ referring to me? Do I have some mental issue I don’t know about?” According to Li Bo, the werewolf from last night was the demon. Rao Tian thought about it. He knew he could be selfish sometimes. So, I’m the monster, he realized, feeling guilty about scratching Li Xian. He had mistaken her for a monster and acted carelessly around her. But now, maybe he could join the organization that was after him. He could destroy it from the inside. Rao Tian smiled quietly to himself. “But I refuse!” Li Bo almost spat out his ice dessert. Rao Tian often got nervous when playing the game Werewolf. He’d talk too much and give himself away. In real life, if he played the werewolf role poorly, he’d be caught the next day. If he made a mistake while working for the organization, its security system would trap him. It would be like a fish in a barrel. “I have my own dreams. I want to go to my dream university and work a regular job. I’m sorry, but I refuse.” “That’s fine. Everyone has their own choice,” Li Bo said. He adjusted his glasses and put down his ice dessert. He still had work to do. “Would you like to take a tour? Li Ran, show this young man around.” Li Ran, the leader of the Wolf-Hunting Squad, wore the organization’s uniform. Her hair was tied in a bun, and she looked innocent. Rao Tian followed Li Ran to her office. The Wolf-Hunting Squad’s office was next to the basement bathroom. Before opening the door, Li Ran asked, “Rao Tian, do you believe in werewolves?” Rao Tian’s heart skipped a beat. He thought they had figured something out. “Uh… Are you talking about the werewolves from Werewolf?” Li Ran smiled but didn’t answer. She opened the door and let Rao Tian see what was inside.
