Chapter 9: Walking with Wolves
Under the moonlight, Rao Tian crouched in a small forest near the warehouse. The Wolf-Hunting Squad was with him.
“This is a water pouch. It holds liquids that can drive away a wolf pack.
“If it hits a werewolf’s face, it will knock it out for the day.
“This is an infrared device. It helps us see the werewolf’s location clearly.
“This is a wolf-repellent spray…”
Li Ran showed him the tools she had brought. She didn’t notice that Rao Tian looked nervous.
Li Ran liked stealth tactics.
Even if Rao Tian was in his werewolf form, if he wasn’t ready, Li Ran could still defeat him.
They had crossbows, machetes, and a bottle of holy water.
“Do you think the werewolf will be stupid enough to come back?”
Rao Tian thought that he would never be that foolish.
He didn’t think waiting here would work.
“The werewolf is dumb. It only cares about blood and violence. It’s not much smarter than a regular wolf. But don’t worry, I have a hundred ways to kill it.”
Li Ran gave each squad member a silver dagger.
Rao Tian didn’t know if he feared silver. According to legends, werewolves did.
He looked over at the trap near the warehouse.
There was a deep hole covered with straw, and a piece of pork was placed on top. It was a simple wolf trap.
Was Li Ran trying to catch something else?
“What if the werewolf doesn’t come tonight?”
“Then we’ll try again tomorrow. We’ll keep trying until it shows up elsewhere.”
“What if we can’t defeat it and get killed?”
“Then the information we leave behind will help others. They will learn from our experience and destroy the creature.”
“…”
Noticing the conversation was becoming serious, Li Ran spoke again.
“Don’t worry about me. I have a hundred ways to survive…”
“By the way, have you taken off those colored contacts yet?”
Rao Tian’s blue eyes glowed faintly under the moonlight.
“Ah, I forgot again.”
Rao Tian tapped his head, pretending to forget.
Li Ran often heard funny stories about him. He forgot his backpack at school, forgot his umbrella in the rain, or even forgot to wear socks or take his phone.
He acted like a little rabbit, always daydreaming. It seemed like any hungry wolf could eat him.
The midnight bell rang twelve times. Shadows stirred under the moonlight.
Although it was a full moon, Rao Tian knew it wouldn’t affect him as long as he didn’t look directly at it.
He had learned at home that his transformation wasn’t linked to the time of day.
The hoot of an owl startled several birds in the dark forest. Their calls echoed through the trees.
The Wolf-Hunting Squad seemed to sense something and put on their infrared devices.
They fell into alert mode, forming a circle around Rao Tian, with their backs to him.
But in the darkness, Rao Tian could see better than they could.
Patience was important in hunting and ambushing. Rao Tian followed them, and time slowly passed.
“Shh~ Something’s moving toward the trap. It looks like… a high school girl?”
Li Ran’s infrared device showed only a vague outline.
The figure walked around the trap, then suddenly disappeared.
Rao Tian thought the girl looked familiar. He had an idea who it might be.
“Disappeared?”
The squad members readied their weapons, took off their infrared devices, and walked toward the trap.
How could she just vanish?
As they searched, trying to spot the girl,
“Cackle, cackle, ha ha ha, wuwu…”
A strange laugh mixed with cries echoed in the air.
A figure appeared nearby—it was a monster!
The creature had two heads, seven arms, and a terrifying smile. Its body was covered in eyes, all staring at them with greed.
It felt like looking at it for too long would drain their sanity.
“This is a B-class evil spirit—Heart Devourer? It specializes in mental attacks!”
The squad members’ eyes widened, and their faces became serious.
They had trained for this. They were immune to mental contamination. But they weren’t sure if Rao Tian could handle it.
“Is this the monster that comes out at night?”
Rao Tian had never seen anything like it. The creature was strange, to say the least.
...
Now, the squad and the monster faced off. The Heart Devourer stared at them with its red eyes, filled with greed.
But it didn’t attack.
The Heart Devourer was a spirit, so physical attacks couldn’t touch it.
It could summon clones to attack their minds.
Li Ran knew the Heart Devourer well. It was detailed in the organization’s evil spirit manual.
Their squad carried only physical weapons, like crossbows, swords, and shields.
They weren’t skilled in magic, which other monster-hunting groups specialized in.
Her team was known for its agility, combat skills, and tactical thinking.
If Rao Tian hadn’t acted tonight, with their skills and investigative methods,
In two days, the organization would be at his door.
But against a spirit like the Heart Devourer, they were helpless.
Her team wouldn’t make it out alive.
“Rao Tian, go! You’re just an ordinary person. It’s too dangerous here for you.”
Li Ran quickly assessed the situation and handed Rao Tian an axe and a shield.
“These will protect you. Go find the others and get them to guard you.”
The Heart Devourer couldn’t physically attack them, so they wouldn’t die here.
Rao Tian grabbed the items from Li Ran, said nothing, and ran off without a second glance.
“Put the holy water on yourself. Luckily, I prepared it.
“It will reduce its mental attack damage. Our message has reached headquarters. Reinforcements will come soon.”
Li Ran calmly assessed the situation.
Her team had one more way to deal with the Heart Devourer.
They could force its mouth open and pour 800ml of holy water into it to purify it.
The squad followed their leader’s orders, preparing for battle.
