Family Matters

Le Bernardin loomed before Maya like a final exam she hadn't studied for. She smoothed her dress – Chanel still felt foreign on her skin – and touched the sapphire earrings for the hundredth time. The maître d' spotted her immediately. "Ms. Chen. Miss Harrison is waiting." Claire Harrison held court at a corner table, radiating the same commanding presence as her brother but with a warmth Ethan kept carefully hidden. She stood as Maya approached, revealing a statuesque figure in a cream power suit. "So you're the woman who proposed to my brother on a sidewalk." Claire's smile was sharp but genuine. "I like you already." Maya found herself pulled into an elegant hug that smelled of Chanel No. 5. "I... thank you?" "Sit. We have much to discuss and only two hours before my next board meeting." Claire signaled for wine. "First, let me say that while this situation is unconventional, it might be exactly what Ethan needs." "What he needs?" "A humanizing element. The board's been concerned about his image, especially with the Porter merger approaching." Claire studied Maya over her wine glass. "Though I suspect you knew that already." Maya chose her words carefully. "Ethan mentioned some PR concerns." "Ethan mentions what suits him." Claire leaned forward. "What he probably didn't mention is that this merger isn't just business. It's personal." "Personal how?" "James Porter's father and our father were partners once. Until Richard Porter orchestrated a hostile takeover that nearly destroyed our family's company. Ethan was just finishing business school when it happened." Claire's expression darkened. "Our father didn't survive the stress. Literally." Maya's stomach clenched. "I had no idea." "Few do. Ethan rebuilt everything from scratch, turned Harrison Enterprises into what it is today. And now he's finally in position to acquire Porter Industries." A satisfied smile crossed Claire's face. "Having their golden boy's ex-girlfriend on our side? That's just icing on the cake." "Is that all I am? Revenge by proxy?" "Oh no, darling." Claire reached across the table, squeezing Maya's hand. "You're much more than that. You're the first woman my brother's shown genuine interest in since Rachel." "Rachel?" Something flashed in Claire's eyes. "He hasn't mentioned her?" "We haven't exactly had time for detailed personal histories." "No, I suppose not." Claire sat back as their first course arrived. "Let's just say Rachel taught Ethan that mixing business with pleasure can be... dangerous." Maya pushed her food around her plate. "Should I be worried?" "About Rachel? No. She's ancient history." Claire's smile returned. "About falling for my brother? Absolutely." Before Maya could respond, her phone buzzed: "How's lunch? Don't let Claire scare you too much. - E" Followed immediately by: "Though she's probably right about whatever she's warning you about." Maya looked up to find Claire watching her, amused. "He's checking up on us?" "Ethan likes to control variables." Claire signaled for more wine. "You, my dear, are decidedly not a variable he can control. It's good for him." "I'm not sure he'd agree." "Trust me, if Ethan didn't want this arrangement, no sidewalk proposal would have changed his mind." Claire's expression turned serious. "Which brings me to the real reason for lunch. How much do you know about the Porter merger?" "Only what's been in the press." "And what James has told you?" Maya thought back to three years of dinner conversations, of James's late nights and mounting stress. "He said it was a hostile takeover attempt. That Harrison Enterprises was trying to dismantle Porter Industries piece by piece." "Interesting perspective." Claire pulled out a tablet, sliding it across the table. "Here's ours." Maya scrolled through document after document – financial reports, emails, board meeting minutes. Her financial analyst training kicked in as patterns emerged. "They're cooking the books," she whispered. "Porter Industries has been falsifying reports for years." "Now you see why Ethan's so interested in this merger." Claire took back the tablet. "It's not just about revenge. It's about preventing another family from losing everything to Porter's schemes." Maya's head spun. "Does James know?" "What do you think?" Before Maya could process this, her phone lit up again – James this time: "Maya, please. Meet me. There are things you need to know about Harrison. About what really happened with his father." She showed Claire the message. The other woman's expression hardened. "And so it begins. They'll try to turn you against us, paint Ethan as the villain." Claire stood, dropping her napkin. "The question is, whose story do you believe?" "I believe in facts," Maya said firmly. "Show me proof, I'll draw my own conclusions." Claire's smile was approving. "I can see why Ethan chose you." She gathered her things. "One last thing – there's a charity gala tomorrow night. Your first official appearance as a couple. The dress will be delivered to your apartment." "I haven't agreed to go." "Yes, you have. Just like you agreed to this whole arrangement." Claire kissed her cheek. "Welcome to the family, Maya. Try not to let the games break your heart." After Claire left, Maya sat alone, mind racing. Her phone buzzed one final time: "Survived Claire? Good. Car's waiting outside. We need to talk. - E" Maya gathered her courage and stepped out into the waiting photographers. As flashbulbs popped, she spotted a familiar figure across the street – James, watching with an unreadable expression. She lifted her chin and walked to Ethan's car, feeling like a pawn in a game where no one had bothered to explain the rules. But pawns could become queens, she reminded herself. And she had three months to learn how to play. The car door opened to reveal Ethan, looking unfairly handsome in a charcoal suit. "Ready for your next lesson in being a Harrison?" Maya slid in beside him, noting how naturally he took her hand. "Ready to tell me the truth about Rachel?" His fingers tightened almost imperceptibly. "Some stories are better left in the past." "And some secrets have a way of coming back to haunt us." His smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Then it's a good thing this is all pretend, isn't it?" But as the car pulled away, Maya couldn't help but wonder – what part of this was still pretense, and what was becoming dangerously real?
