A beam of blinding light swept across the tarmac, followed by the squeal of brakes as a vehicle came to a halt at the edge of the concrete landing pad. “Alright, boys! Grab your gear and get on!” A military officer jumped down from a battery-powered transport truck and called out to the six young men who’d just been unceremoniously dumped there. The vehicle was a long, flat cargo hauler — the kind normally used for moving supplies. A set of temporary guardrails had been mounted on the sides, but there were no seats at all.
