Nishika’s POV.
The weekend went by quickly. Mom and Ajith Bhai gave me a surprise visit. I was relaxing in my room on Sunday evening after my breakfast when there was a knock on the door. Usually, Shamita aunty calls me by my name but after two more persistent knocks, I was confused.
“Shamita Aunty please come in; the door is unlocked” I called out to her. I was confused when she did not walk in. I tried once again but still there was continuous knocking. I am not someone to get angry.
The evening time slot, I have dedicated it to myself and I get angry when someone disturbs me for no reason. Obviously, I get mood swings every now and then. I am not perfect. I have my flaws.
“Nishu” then all of sudden I hear a familiar voice. I gasp in surprise. I keep my cellphone on the bed and run towards the door. As it was already unlocked, the person on the opposite opens it who also happens to be my mom.
“Maasa” saying that I leaped forward and hug my mom. Being a Marwari, we call our mom by masa.
“Hey cry baby” I hear my elder brother’s teasing voice. I chuckle and move back to hug him as well. But he being elder likes to trouble me.
“No don’t, I don’t want your snot all over me” he makes a face at my stuffy and red nose.
“Very funny” I stuck my tongue out at him with a pouting face.
“Jitu, stop troubling your sister” mom chided him in a soft tone.
“Maasa, I am stating the fact, look at her red nose” he wrinkled his nose in the process while pointing at me.
“Bhai” I shout and purposely try to hug him. But as he knew me very well, he starts running. We both run while circling mom.
“What is all this commotion about?” Shamita aunty comes in front of Ajith Bhai. Bhai had nowhere to run and I was fast enough to pounce on him and wipe my nose on his shirt.
“Yuck Maasa, see what she has done” he glares at me while I laugh at his expenses.
“Now enough both of you. Greet her properly Ajith” says mom with a serious tone.
Begrudgingly, with a scowl on his face, he comes and hugs me. I hug him back. We may tease each other all the time, but we do care the same. It is part of being siblings.
“Maasa, how come you are here?” I ask as I and masa settle on the bed. Bhai sits on one of the chairs.
She palms my cheek and gazes at me lovingly “We knew you would feel lonely. So, we came here” she replies with a smile on her face.
“And Papa agreed to send you here?” I ask with my eyebrows raised.
My papa never agreed to coddle us as we grew up. He was always very strict and less emotional He always said that emotions can make a person weak, as they tend to make wrong decisions. He always says that we should never get emotionally attached to a person, because when the time comes to go far away, it could be tough.
And now I can realize why he might have said like that. Mom would have never agreed to send me here, living on my own. But it was Papa, who was adamant to make sure I will go alone. Now here I am. It got lonely, the whole week. But I have managed.
“I can be persistent when I want to” was all Maasa replied with a smile on her face.
“I don’t believe you” I say with a shake of my head. Papa never really showed his loving nature towards Maasa. I felt that he is an un emotional person. But I could see that my Maasa respects him dearly. I could see the love in her eyes for my papa.
“I am here, aren’t I?” she asks with her eyebrows raised.
Giving her a sheepish look, I reply “Yes. You are”.
“I will meet you by dinner Maasa. I am going to meet Lalit” Ajith informs Maasa and she nods.
“By Giddu” He smirks as he ran out of my room.
“I am not Giddu” I call out to him in my high-pitched voice.
“You so are” was his far away voice as he goes down the stairs. I pout and look at Maasa.
“He is just pulling your leg. Don’t mind him” She says in her soft voice. I hug her once again.
“I am so happy you came Maasa.” My voice came out muffled as my face was pressed on her shoulder. She pats my back affectionately.
“I am here for a week. After that you should start adjusting.” She says to me with an understanding look.
“I am glad to hear that. I am happy you came” was all I replied.
“So, how is it going?” she asks conversationally.
“It is going good. I have made a new friend Varsha. She is complete chatter box. You will like her Maasa” I say enthusiastically.
“Really?” she asks and I nod at her.
“After classes, I have joined accountancy class it is conducted by the same professor.” I informed her.
“That’s good. What are the timings of your classes?” she inquires as I lay down my head on her lap. She roams her fingers in my hairs.
“From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. After that we have an hour gap for lunch breaks. At 2 p.m. the accountancy ma’am takes extra classes to teach us ahead of schedule. Most of the class girls have joined. I will be home by three thirty in the afternoon” I explain my whole day schedule to her.
“Does Shaam bring your tiffin during the lunch?”
Understanding what she meant, I gave her a knowing look “He does. Shamita aunty packs me hot lunch. Don’t worry they take care of me like you had instructed them too.”
“I know they do. But I had to make sure they are not slacking because no one is there to look” She says to me. I nod at her in understanding. The next one hour goes by quickly with me and Maasa continuously chatting. We only went for dinner when Ajith Bhai returned.
“Both of you have one whole week to chat. Are you going to finish it in one day?” he asks in sarcastic tone as he looked from me to Maasa.
“We will have more topics to discuss” I pointed out.
“Ladies” he says with a roll of his eyes.
“What is that supposed to mean?” I put my hands on my hips. Maasa also supported me by narrowing her eyes at Ajith Bhai.
“Uh…. Nothing. Stop being so defensive. Everybody knows ladies are known to gossip for hours and they won’t even know how much time has passed” he explained.
“So, it is not a bad habit” I inform him to which he ignores me.
Before I could reply anything else, Maasa interrupts.
“Now don’t start both of you. Come let’s have dinner” with that she pulls both me and bhai downstairs. We obliged. We had our dinner while chatting and so on. I went to sleep early as the next day I had class. Maasa and Bhai also went to rest as they were tired from their journey as well.
The next morning, I woke up early. Had a shower. Today I decided to wear my yellow colour kurta with ankle length blue denim. I wore my flat shoes. Collecting my thing, I went downstairs.
“Good Morning” to which bhai teases “Good Morning Giddu.”
“Bhai” I stomp my foot. Maasa gave bhai a look to which he did not trouble me any further.
“Today I will be coming to drop you to college” Bhai informs me. I stop mid-way and turn to him.
“Why?” I ask with raised eyebrows.
“I just want to check it out. I have to make sure it is safe for you.” He explained.
“Fine” I replied with a shrug of my shoulder. After breakfast, me and Bhai left for my college.
“So, how is it really going in college?” Bhai asks me.
“It’s going good so far” was my casual reply.
“Any guy I need to warn?”
“It’s just over a week. At least not for now”
I added “You will tell me the moment any guy troubles you” He says in older protective manner.
“Fine, Dad” I reply with a roll of my eyes.
“Feel pleased that it is me and not really Papa” he pointed out.”
“Oh, thank you. Should I touch your feet for that?” I ask with a sarcastic voice.
“I will save it when the time comes” he smirks.
“Of course,” I murmur.
“did you say something?”
“Nothing”, I reply and that is when we reach college. Before I could open the door, bhai auto locks it so that I don’t get outside.
“What?” I ask turning to face him. My eyebrows drawn together.
“You will tell me if something is getting out of control.”
I could see the concern in his eyes for me. Being an elder brother, he is just worried.
Letting out a sigh, I give him a knowing look.
“I understand where you are coming from Bhai. But you have to trust me. Let me test the waters myself. Don’t worry. If I start feeling too much overwhelmed, you will be the first one to know” I assure him in my calm voice.
“I know you are sensible and smart. But this is a totally new place to you. I don’t want you going through the same thing which….” He left unsaid.
I don’t need to ask him whom he was speaking about. He hardly ever speaks about the love of his life, whom he lost because their paths were not same at that point of time in life.
“I will be careful Bhai” I assure him once again. Only then did he relax and hugged me.
“Okay, off you go now. I will meet you in the evening” with that said he unlocked the car door.
“Bye” with that I get out and watch him drive away. I enter through the college gates. I was walking when I hear Varsha calling out to me.
“Hey Nishika, wait up” I turn around to find her fast walking towards me.
“Good Morning” She greets me while painting.
“Relax, we still have ten minutes before the class starts.”
Giving me a sheepish look, she says “Yeah.”
“So, who was that handsome who just dropped you?” She asks with her over curious look.
“Who?” I pretend just to trouble her.
“The one who dropped you” She stated with excited look on her face.
“His my bhai Ajith” I inform her.
“He is very handsome” She compliments with a shy look.
“Have you just developed a crush?” I teased her. She shakes her head at me with her eyes wide.
“Stay away. It’s against code you know” I point a finger.
“Of course” she agrees with a serious face. We walk in class and take our seats. As soon as we settled, the oh so famous Nishant walks in. Note the sarcasm. He comes and settles behind me and Varsha.
“Good Morning class. I want complete silence. Anyone who makes nuisance can freely walk out now itself” the professor tries to show off her strict side.
No one really walks out because no one wants to make a target out of themselves for the whole year.
“Good. Now we shall start with the class.”
“We are going to start Accounting and its theory part” with that the next hour passed by with everyone keenly listening to the professor.
I took notes wherever necessary. I could feel a particular person’s stare. I ignored it knowing there is no good coming out of it. After two classes. Everyone left as we had break of half an hour.
I try to walk out when someone deliberately blocks my way. I tried to side step, knowing who it is because he has been bugging me nonstop. Frustrated when he does not move out of my way. I snap at him.
“Move out of my way Nishant”
“What if I Don’t?” he asks with a smirk.
“I don’t have time to waste on you” I reply through gritted teeth.
“Oh, you are the almighty Nishika Jain” he gives me a sarcastic look.
“You won’t move out of my way?” I ask him with a tilt of my chin.
“Nope” he says.
“Don’t say I did not warn you” I say. He gives me a confuse look. Soon the confused looked turned into pain as I walk past him.
