Damage Control

Evelyn didn't sleep that night either. She lay awake replaying the message over and over, the porch light still burned into her eyes, Liam's pale, panicked face looping on repeat. Tell Evelyn the real messages are still coming. What messages. Coming from where. From who. By morning, she had her answer, whether she wanted it or not. Her phone had exploded overnight — forty-three notifications, most of them tagging her in the same video, already circulating under three different captions across two different group chats. The kiss. Someone had caught the whole thing, start to finish, clean angle, perfect lighting, uploaded within minutes of it happening. By sunrise it had nearly four hundred views on the private class story alone, and the number was climbing every time Evelyn made the mistake of checking. "Okay," Chloe said, peering over her shoulder at breakfast, "that's... a lot of comments." "I know." "Some of them are actually really sweet, though. Look—" Chloe scrolled past a wall of flame emojis and FINALLY comments to one from a girl Evelyn barely recognized. okay but this is actually kind of romantic??? "It's not romantic, Chloe, it's a disaster. Liam saw. My entire relationship imploded on camera. And there's apparently some mystery person sending cryptic threats about more messages coming." Chloe's smile faded. "Right. That part." Evelyn pushed her tray away, appetite gone. "I don't even know who sent it. The number's not saved anywhere. It's not Noah's — I checked. It's not anyone I recognize." "Could it be Sienna? Covering her tracks with a burner?" "Maybe." Evelyn rubbed her temples. "Or Liam. Something made him bolt like that. I've never seen him look that scared." Her phone buzzed again — not the mystery number this time, but Jaxon. Jaxon: you seen the video yet? Evelyn: unfortunately yes. you? Jaxon: noah sent it to me about nine times. can we talk? not over text They met at their usual table in the library an hour later, both of them visibly running on no sleep, both of them carefully avoiding the topic hovering over the entire conversation until Jaxon finally broke first. "For what it's worth," he said, "I don't regret it." Evelyn's stomach flipped. "The kiss?" "The kiss." A pause. "Any of it, honestly. Even with the fallout." "Liam basically ran off a cliff last night. Something on his phone freaked him out badly." Jaxon's expression sharpened slightly. "You think it's connected? To the messages the anonymous number mentioned?" "I don't know. It felt connected. The timing was too exact to be coincidence." They sat with that for a moment, the library quiet around them, the weight of everything — the video, the rumors, the unsettling sense that something bigger was moving underneath all of it — pressing into the silence. "Can I ask you something?" Evelyn said finally. "Go ahead." "Why'd you let me decide? Last night. You said it was my call. You could've just said no, avoided the whole thing." Jaxon considered the question for a long moment, like he was weighing exactly how much to give her. "Because everyone in my life has spent two years deciding things for me," he said finally. "What I am. What I'll become. Whether I'm dangerous or broken or both. I'm tired of people deciding things about me without asking. Figured the least I could do was not do the same thing to you." Something in Evelyn's chest ached at that — not pity, something closer to recognition, like she understood exactly what it felt like to have your whole identity decided before you'd gotten a say in it. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. "About your dad. About the hearing." Jaxon's jaw tightened slightly, but he didn't shut down the way he usually did when the topic came up. "It didn't go the way we hoped. Won't bore you with the details. Just — add it to the pile of reasons campus thinks I'm one bad day from turning into him." "You're not him." "You don't know that." "I know you visit your sister every week without fail," Evelyn said, surprising herself with how certain it came out. "I know you left a kiss on everyone's terms but your own last night because you didn't want to make a choice for me. I know enough." Jaxon looked at her for a long moment, something unguarded flickering behind his eyes before he caught it and reined it back in. "Careful," he said, voice low. "Keep talking like that and I might start believing you." "Would that be so bad?" "Terrifying, actually." The ghost of a smile. "But not bad." Before either of them could say anything else, Evelyn's phone buzzed on the table between them — the group chat this time, blowing up with a fresh wave of chaos. @_sienna.m posted a story. tap to view. Evelyn's stomach sank as she opened it, Jaxon leaning in to look at the same time. It was a screenshot. Messages — private, clearly stolen from somewhere, timestamped from weeks ago — showing a conversation between Liam and someone whose contact name had been carefully blurred out. Except the content wasn't blurred. can't keep doing this behind her back she's gonna find out eventually i know. i'll handle it. just give me time Evelyn's hands went cold around the phone. "Is that—" she started. "Looks like it," Jaxon said grimly. The caption underneath, written in Sienna's unmistakable, gleeful font, read: oop. guess SOMEONE'S been hiding more than one secret 👀 more coming soon... Evelyn's mind raced, piecing together the panic on Liam's face the night before, the mystery messages, the warning that more was coming. This wasn't about her and Jaxon anymore. This was something else entirely — something Liam had clearly been hiding long before any coffee spilled on any jacket, long before any dare, long before any of it. And whoever was behind the leak had just made it very, very clear. They weren't finished.
