AVA
The door screwed shut behind me, echoing louder than my own heartbeat. My head spun as I staggered to a couch and flung myself weakly on it.
Echoes of my past were back, haunting me in a way I never imagined.
My chest tightened. I had never expected to meet her after all these years. I never expected that she will turn out to be Levi's mother.
I let my hands rise slowly to my sweaty forehead. My chest rose and fell rapidly. Everything seemed to be happening fast. Too fast.
Her words echoed continuously in my ears as I closed my ears, shutting my eyes tight in guilt. Infact, guilt was an understatement. I had caused their family’s downfall. Because of me, her husband almost died.
All because of one damn night.
The air suddenly felt too thick to breathe in. Memories of that night blurred into my vision: the strong scent of Alcohol, rustling of clothes, my screams, unbuckling of belt.
“Arggghh!!!” I yelled out, my eyes brimming with tears.
That single night tore me apart and ruined my life.
I sniffled, pushing the hurtful memories away. This wasn't the time to relive those nightmares. My main goal now was to seek her forgiveness at any cost.
She had assigned me a task, a difficult and dangerous one.
But if that was what she desired and what could make her forgive my actions, then I had no other choice but to succumb to her wishes.
Even though I knew it was a dangerous path to tread, I needed her to forgive me.
I was willing to do anything, literally anything to gain her forgiveness.
The consequences of turning her request down scared the hell out of me. If Levi learned of the fact that I was the cause of their downfall, I didn't want to imagine what his reaction will be.
But one thing was for certain, I wasn't going to survive his wrath.
I swallowed, a pang of guilt seeping into my chest. Though, this wasn't entirely my fault. But who will believe me anyway?
Absolutely No one.
The shrill ring of my phone shattered my thoughts as I jerked up and searched through my hand bag, my palms sweaty and trembling.
The caller ID showed Levi and my heart began racing.
What if he learned of the truth already?
I swallowed, chest heaving. My eyes fluttered close as my fingers gently swiped green.
“Let's meet.” He mumbled, his voice neutral.
My eyes snapped open. On first instincts, I wanted to ask him “why” but on a second thought, I remained silent.
“My mom approves of you.” I heard him say and chuckle lightly afterwards.
My head ached.
If only he knew the cards she had up her sleeves.
“Ok.” I struggled to mutter, my voice barely audible.
The call ended, and my phone slipped from my hands and landed on the couch.
I clearly understood Racheal, Levi mom's plight. She wasn't doing this to hurt her son despicably. She was only doing this to make him pay for his sins and learn a huge lesson. He was a heartless playboy who used and dump girls like they were toilet papers. Racheal knew that if she didn't tame him in time, she might never have a chance to do so.
But still, why did I have to be chosen for the task?
I choked on my spit when my phone rang again. My pulse raced as I checked the caller ID. I sighed out in relief when I saw Aunt Dina's name.
A wave of excitement suddenly surged through me as I sniffled, swiping green.
“Aunt!!!” Craige and Chris voices boomed through the phone in delight. I chuckled, my eyes lightening up with excitement.
“My babies!!” I retorted, my voice cracking a bit. How much I missed those two.
“Ughhh, they won't even let me speak.” Aunt Dina groaned as the twins grinned cutely.
“We've missed you so much Aunt.” I heard Chris say as I felt my stomach churn in excitement.
“Same here. When will you be back?” Craig whined.
My chest tightened.
“Can you just let her breathe?” Dina came to my rescue. “Have you done your school work? Move it.” She added and I could hear Craig and Chris groaning.
I sighed, a tear rolling down my cheek.
“How are you?” She muttered after few moments of heavy silence.
I heaved a sigh once more. “I'm f–”
“Spare me that lie.” She cut in almost immediately. I swallowed, she already sensed my inner panic.
“Let it out Ava.” She whisphered, softly this time. Her words broke my last wall of defence as my sobs began.
“I met her again. After all these years. Her business crashed all because of me, her husband almost died.” I spilled, my heart aching as the memories rushed in once more.
I didn't fail to hear her sharp intake of breath.
I paused as my sob continued.
“It's not your fault, Ava.” She whispered.
“You remember Levi? The jerk I told you about?”
“Yes, the arrogant dummy who offered you a marriage contract.”
“She's his mom.” I dropped the bombshell as Dina gasped out loudly.
“Oh my Goodness!!”
“Now, she knows about everything. She knows we were just trying to fool her. And now, she's turned the tables around.”
“What…what do you mean?” Aunt Dina's voice broke.
My chest tightened.
“I won't be returning back anytime soon.” My voice cracked.
“Why….what's wrong?” She questioned, raising her voice a bit.
I couldn't tell her. Not yet.
“I have to hang up now.” I muttered and before she could protest, I hung up and switched off my phone.
I hugged my knees tightly to my chest, burying my head in my palms.
Few minutes later, the knock on the door thrifted into my thoughts as I jerked up, startled.
I strolled to the door and turned the door knob.
My breath caught when I beheld his gaze. His eyes were spitting out fire.
I stepped back subconsciously.
And then, it hit me–raw and bitter.
He already found out.
I was doomed.
