Chapter 4

HARVEY “Hey man, what are you doing here in the dark, smoking all alone and missing the fun going down there?” The lights in my private suite at Lunacrest Academy suddenly turned on. Someone had dared to walk in without my permission and cut my precious alone time short. Only one person could do that and still remain alive. My best friend, Miles Cross. I puffed out the last drag of smoke, then rolled my eyes as he casually dropped onto the couch directly in front of me. Miles was the complete opposite of me. Ginger nut hair, bright eyes, and a handsome, cheerful face that could light up any room. He looked every bit the playboy who could slip into any girl’s panties with just a single smile. Caleb Knox and I had once been close, but we had drifted apart over the years. It was never a real friendship anyway. We did not particularly care about each other. From a young age, we were simply forced to tolerate one another during council meetings with the other alphas. It was nothing more than a friendship of convenience. The real bond was with Miles Cross, who came from the powerful werewolf bloodline of the Silver Fang pack. Beneath that cheerful exterior, he was fierce and deadly in battle. “I know you would rather die than attend such events. You should have just stayed home,” he teased. “Not funny, Miles. Do not get on my nerves. I am not in the mood.” “Uh? Who got our little puppy pissed? You just got back yesterday and you already look like you want to burn this entire place down.” He chuckled, clearly amused. “Tell me, I heard you literally lost your s**t yesterday because of a girl. Is she your mate? You always said you did not care about fated mates and all that nonsense. Did she turn you down after you showed up as her knight in shining armor?” I glanced at him. The cigar stopped halfway to my mouth. My gaze darkened as something dangerous stirred deep inside my chest. Even though we were extremely close, Miles had no idea that Mia was my stepsister. That was how much I loathed her existence. Damn it, I hated her so much. I wanted to break her, to make her feel every single ounce of pain her w***e of a mother had caused my family. I wanted her to suffer until she begged for mercy that would never come. Yet in a sick, twisted way, I could not stand it when anyone else tried to bully or touch her. I would rip the heads off anyone who dared lay a finger on Mia Bennett, if that person was not me. Only I was allowed to make her life a living hell. I remembered how pitiful she had looked yesterday. Her half-n***d body trembling under the dim light, revealing the soft, pale curve of her breasts. Her skin had glowed with a delicate sheen of sweat, rising and falling rapidly with every frightened breath she took. Those long, slender legs pressed tightly together in a useless attempt to hide herself, the smooth expanse of her thighs quivering slightly. Even her small, delicate hands clutching at the torn material could not hide the way her body responded to my presence. Innocent. Vulnerable. Tempting. The way she had whimpered when my fingers brushed against her bare skin still echoed in my ears. A soft, broken sound that sent heat rushing straight to my core. I drew in a sharp breath. The image had not left my mind for even a second since yesterday. Was this how my father had been seduced by her mother? Those wide, innocent-looking eyes paired with full, trembling lips and a body that begged to be claimed, touched, ruined… “Harvey? Harvey?!” I snapped out of my trance. Only then did I realize I had completely zoned out. And my pants… I shifted slightly on the couch, adjusting my position to hide the obvious hardness straining against the fabric. The mere thought of my worst enemy’s n***d body was enough to make me throb with need, dangerously close to losing control. Right, Harvey. You have officially gone crazy. “Stop bugging me, Miles. I am leaving.” I stood up abruptly and headed for the door. “Oh s**t! What the hell!” I turned around to see him staring at his phone, his face twisted in pure shock. “Have they suddenly gone mad? Trying to do this to a girl in broad daylight?” I wanted to keep walking. I did not give a damn about whatever internet gossip had caught his attention this time. Miles had always been obsessed with that nonsense. Then a sharp, searing pain sliced through my chest. The exact same pain I had felt yesterday when Mia was in trouble. My eyes glowed with raw power as my entire body burned with furious intensity. A deep, primal growl tore from my throat before I could stop it. “Our mate is in trouble.”
