Trevor woke with a start. He was confused and disoriented, and every part of his body hurt. Then he remembered he was at the Shed. He had been there for six months. Last night, he won the fighting match. Trevor lay back down on the hard bed. His mind drifted back over the last three years—memories that were fading and he wasn’t even sure were real. What he remembered was a coach from his school had invited him over. The coach had found that Trevor’s parents were recently divorced, and his father lived sixty miles away. Trevor’s mother worked nights. Trevor had been only twelve years old, but he was home alone most nights. His mother worked only a few blocks away, and he could call her if he needed anything. The coach caught him after school one day and asked if he would like to come over
