Chapter 1

Prologue Amelia’s POV That night, I was nervously standing by the door as I watched my father, the best physician in the kingdom, treat the wounds of the vampire King Leon. The vampire kingdoms were constantly at war for the last century; each kingdom claiming they had more right to rule over all the other kingdoms than the next. After the devastating loss of the war, King Leon returned with a stab wound at his abdomen. Fortunately, the wound was not fatal, but that meant there was now a lot of displeasure amongst his own kingdom. A knock on the door behind me startled me into almost dropping my father’s medical case. I stepped aside as the door opened and Prince Ambrose, King Leon’s oldest son, silently stepped into the room. “How is he?” He whispered whilst standing right next to me. I started to tap my fingers on the case’s handle as my heart began to race. All of King Leon’s sons were magnificently handsome and charming, but Prince Ambrose was the only one that managed to make me fall in love with him. Everything about him was perfect. He was tall with platinum blonde hair and sweet face. Apart from that, he was not as conceited and arrogant as the rest of his brothers were. They all made fun of me for being plain but Prince Ambrose only needed to comment on my long, black hair once in order for me to fall in love with him. He saw me when the others didn’t. “I-I… I think he will recover quickly and splendidly,” I stuttered as I spoke, keeping my eyes on the floor. “I see,” Prince Ambrose said. I could have been mistaken but I thought I sensed a hint of disappointment in his tone. He grabbed my hair and I flinched, not from fear but from excitement. “Come with me for a moment,” he whispered. I nodded almost immediately and put my father’s case on the floor by the door. I followed behind him as he led me further and further away from his father’s quarters. I would have followed him to the ends of the world. And when I noticed that he was leading me to his bedroom, wild thoughts formed in my mind. “I need you to help me kill my father,” he said as soon as he closed the door after I entered the room. I was so taken aback by his request that I had to ask him to repeat himself because I thought my imagination was running amok. “I know your father keeps all kinds of medicines and poisons alike…” he said, walking closer to me. I had in mind to step bac but didn’t. He took my hands in his and brought them up to smell them, planting a kiss on the back of my right hand. His touch was very cold and chilling in a sensual way. “You were out in the garden again?” he asked and I nodded with a blush, “My mother’s roses. I know you’re in love with them, and I know you’re in love with me, too.” “I understand that, b-but… I…” What I wanted to say was that I thought he was different from his brothers who were very eager for their father to die so they could compete with each other for the succession of the throne. I was sorely mistaken. There was as much civil unrest within the kingdom as there was outside. Ambrose wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me in against his chest. He was so close that I could almost fell the non-existent heartbeat in his chest. “I’ll give you the garden, and plenty more when I make you my queen,” he said. I looked up at his green eyes. They shone like emeralds, and that made it so difficult for me to resist them. “But in order for me to do that, I have to become king. And that won’t happen until my father dies.” The sons had grown impatient. Their father had ruled for over two hundred years already and they could not wait any longer. His reign had to come to an end, otherwise the wars would continue and many more people would die. “I can’t become queen,” I tried to make him understand by attempting to push him away, but he held firmly to my body, “I’m human. They would never accept me.” He rested his cold hand under my chin and tilted my head upwards so I could look at him. He leaned in until his lips were brushing against mine. “They’ll have no choice but to accept you. I promise, you will be queen.” That night, I allowed him to take my virginity. I fell for him harder. I did as he requested and slipped into the King’s meals a poison that would slowly kill him over months. His wound didn’t heal but instead, it began to fester. Two months later, I found out I was pregnant with Prince Ambrose’s child. When I confronted him about the pregnancy in the privacy of his bedroom, he was enraged and threw a chair across the room. As it struck the wall and broke to pieces, I was frightened by the fury in his eyes. “You’re a nurse, aren’t you? Get rid of it!” he pointed a finger at me when he shouted at me. My heart was torn to shreds. “Why should I get of it? You promised you’d marry me!” I shouted back him. Upon hearing that, he boisterously and obnoxiously laughed aloud. I felt nauseous. “Why the f**k would I, a vampire Prince, marry a human? What am I supposed to do with a human child? You and it both will die long before I’ve even reached middle age! Get out! Or I’ll make you wish you never set your eyes on me!” I was at a loss and completely devastated. King Leon was on his death bed. Now that Prince Ambrose had gotten what he wanted, he tossed me aside as though I was human trash. I would not get rid of the child as he asked. That child was mine and I would give it all the love I could give.
