Chapter 4

Orelia’s POV Until I was fifteen years old, I was raised under the impression that Alpha Renner, the leader of the Crescent Black Moon, and his Luna, Edith, were my parents. I was happy with that belief. After all, they raised me alongside Flynn like I was their own child. However, when my twelfth birthday passed and my wolf form did not awaken, the bullying began. “Disgusting!” “Your blood is filthy!” “Dumb human!” “Are you even Alpha Renner’s child?” “Flynn should be embarrassed to have you as a sister!” Each day I went to school, nasty words would be thrown my way. In class, I could hear the students whispering about me. It didn’t help that Flynn was two years older than me so he couldn’t defend me at all times. Some months passed by and I decided to stand up for myself, so I confronted my bullies at the back of the school during lunch. “Do you want to fight me? Do you think you actually stand a chance?” Lovetta was the head of her posse, the group that had been bullying me for months since my twelfth birthday. Before then, she was my best-friend. She even attended my twelfth birthday, but when my wolf form didn’t awaken when expected, she turned on me. “I could rip you to shreds in seconds!” She pushed me down to the ground. It had been raining that day. I fell in a puddle and the water dirtied my hair and clothes. Her friends laughed behind her. I didn’t know why I decided to confront her. I was feeling brave at the moment, but I quickly realised there wasn’t much I could do. “Are you even a wolf? Are you sure you aren’t human? Your ‘parents’ must have picked you up in a ditch!” Every word was a stab at my heart. I wanted her to feel my pain. I cupped my hand and splashed some of the muddy water at her. The water hit her face. She was taken aback and shocked by my retaliation. Without a word, she ran to me and roughly grabbed a handful of my hair. I clawed at her hands for her to release my hair. Her pulling on it was hurting my scalp. “Lovetta! Stop!” Flynn’s voice rang from across the field. He was my hero; my saviour. Every time he would appear just in time to save me. And when Lovetta, who had had a crush on him for years – I knew because she told me about it when we were still friends — asked him why he bothered with defending me, he answered, “Because I’m going to marry her!” For three years what he said always confused me. As far as I was concerned, we were blood related. I thought he was saying that in order to get the bullies to leave me alone. That was until I was fifteen and I asked Alpha Renner why one of the head councilmen of the pack referred to me as, “Half-demon. Half-witch.” When I repeated the phrase to Alpha Renner over dinner, I witnessed the fury immediately build up behind his eyes. Luna Edith looked more distraught than angry, and Flynn did not say a word. That night, I learned that Alpha Renner and Luna Edith were not my biological parents. Flynn was also aware of it all of his life. I asked them what happened to my real parents. As far as they were concerned, my mother was dead. I was found laying on top of my mother’s cold corpse, covered in blood and crying into the night. My mother had been brutally murdered. That night, I sobbed more than I had ever done, even when I was being bullied. Finding out that I was not only an orphan, but that my mother was murdered was more than I could bare. I was never told why I was called a ‘half-demon’, ‘half-witch’, and I never asked again. The head councilman was punished by being removed from his position. At the time, I was unaware of the fallout that occurred between the wolves and the vampires. Present Day It started when I found a letter sitting on the window ledge of my apartment’s bedroom on the evening of my 21st birthday. The day had been completely uneventful. I didn’t like alcohol or large crowds, so the day was spent with Alpha Renner, Luna Edith and Flynn. It was inconspicuously sitting there, and would have blown away had I not noticed it in time. I picked it up and immediately tore into the envelope. It didn’t matter that I was on the 10th floor or how the letter had made it up there; and when I opened it and saw that the signature was Lovetta’s, I was somewhat surprised. I hadn’t spoken to her since the day we graduated when she apologised for the way she mistreated me before. I never thought our friendship could be rekindled, until I received the letter. ‘How was your 21st birthday?’ the letter started. It was simple enough with her wishing me a happy birthday. To be fully honest, I didn’t care for that part. What I cared for was the last part of the letter before she signed it off. ‘I’ll be waiting by the pond at Edna Park at 11pm. I miss you.’ My curiosity was piqued. It was completely unlike Lovetta to shy away from confronting me personally. I imagined she must have felt embarrassed to face me. Although it was strange for her to want to see me so late at night, I couldn’t help but feel warm and excited. Some of the best memories I had involved Lovetta. She was the only friend I had before she turned her back on me. She must have wanted to see me before my birthday would be over. “It’s 10:15pm. I guess I can make it,” I muttered under my breath after looking down at my watch. Edna Park was a twenty-minute walk away. I made it to Edna Park in only fifteen minutes. I hadn’t realised how fast I was walking because I was so excited to see her again. I was thirty minutes ahead of schedule, which made me realise how ridiculous it was that I left so early. The park was empty and quiet. I sat down by a bench underneath a streetlamp to wait patiently for Lovetta to arrive. The pond was across the path. A dog howling in the distance startled me, but I soon calmed down. The city was very safe. There was no reason for me to worry for my safety. The thirty minutes passed slowly, and eventually, five minutes and then ten after that. After sitting patiently for about an hour, it was a cold breeze that made me realise that Lovetta wasn’t coming. I stood up and was about to leave when I flinched at the sound of water splashing nearby. My heart rate quickened as I tried to see what had made the noise. The streetlamp illuminated only a third of the pond from where it was, and the ripples seemed to have been coming from the other end. “Are you serious?” I muttered as soon as I spotted what looked like a person-shaped silhouette from the other end. They didn’t seem to be moving. If it really was a person, they might have needed help. Without another thought, I ran across the path and around the pond. I stopped to walk halfway around the pond. It didn’t take long for my eyes to adjust to the darkness and I completely confirmed my suspicions. It really was a person; a man. His lower body and torso were submerged in the water, which had now taken a darker colour. Not only that, he was unconscious and bleeding from the mouth.
