The Silent Threat

1452 Words
"Of course, I know exactly how far this problem can escalate and that the Harrison family will continue to target me," Blair replied, her voice carrying an unexpected calmness that caught Victoria off guard. Victoria had anticipated tears, perhaps even pleading. She had expected Blair to crumble under the weight of her threats, to show the fear that any reasonable person would feel when facing the might of the Harrison empire. Their power was absolute, their reach extensive, and their resources seemingly limitless. In Victoria's mind, Blair was nothing more than a naive woman playing a dangerous game she could never hope to win. Initially, Victoria had thought Blair was utterly foolish for having the audacity to file for divorce first. Any sensible person in Blair's position would have waited, would have let Finn initiate the proceedings. It would have been the safer, more predictable path. But here was Blair, sitting across from her with an infuriating composure that made Victoria's carefully planned intimidation tactics seem ineffective. "You already know all this, so why would you—" Victoria began, her voice rising with frustration. "I know the Harrison family, and Finn, far better than you do," Blair interrupted smoothly, her words cutting through Victoria's sentence with quiet authority. The interruption sent a jolt of irritation through Victoria. This was the first time Blair had ever spoken to her with such directness, such confidence. Throughout their previous encounters, Blair had always been deferential, almost submissive. This new version of her former friend was unsettling and infuriating in equal measure. "You're right, you do know them better," Victoria said, her lips curving into a cruel smile. "But your position there was nothing more than a glorified servant, wasn't it? A wife who was treated like hired help." She punctuated her words with a mocking laugh, expecting to see Blair's composure finally crack. Instead, Blair's own smile widened, matching Victoria's cruel expression with one of serene confidence. "And your position there is nothing more than a sycophant, isn't it?" Blair responded evenly. "Oh, and also a woman who covets another woman's husband..." The words hit their mark with devastating precision. Victoria's face flushed crimson, her carefully maintained facade crumbling in an instant. "What did you just say? How dare you speak to me like that!" Victoria's voice cracked with rage as she slammed her palm against the table, the sound echoing through the quiet café. Other patrons turned to look, their conversations momentarily pausing as Victoria's composure completely unraveled. She lunged forward, her manicured fingers reaching for Blair's hair with the intention of causing real harm. The movement was swift and vicious, born of years of suppressed jealousy and wounded pride. But James was quicker. The attorney's hand shot out, grasping Victoria's wrist firmly but professionally, preventing her from making contact with his client. "Miss," James said calmly, his voice carrying the authority of someone accustomed to handling volatile situations, "you cannot assault my client, or we will press charges." His grip was firm but not painful, yet the humiliation of being restrained in public sent another wave of fury through Victoria. She yanked her arm free, her breathing ragged as she tried to regain some semblance of dignity. "You're pathetic," she spat, her voice trembling with barely contained rage. "Being deceived by this woman. A lawyer like you, helping a penniless nobody like her! Aren't you afraid of dealing with the Harrison family? Don't you realize you'll lose all your other clients? Let me pay you more than she ever could!" Blair glanced toward James, catching his eye and giving him a subtle shake of her head. She could see the attorney's jaw tighten, could sense his desire to reveal exactly who she was and put Victoria in her place once and for all. But Blair's silent warning was clear, and James, though reluctantly, simply nodded and maintained his professional demeanor. "Miss," James replied with measured politeness, "I appreciate the offer, but I'm not interested. And might I suggest you speak more respectfully to my client?" Victoria's eyes darted between Blair and James, her mind racing as she tried to understand the dynamic she was witnessing. There was something here she wasn't grasping, some piece of the puzzle that remained frustratingly out of reach. "You think you can win against me and the Harrison family?" Victoria's voice grew shrill, her composure completely abandoned now. "We have everything—power, money, connections that span across industries and governments! And what do you have, Blair? Nothing! You're relying on some pathetic evidence to bring down Finn, stealing company secrets like a common criminal. You're doing all this for money, aren't you? That's what this is really about!" Blair met Victoria's frantic gaze with steady calm, her eyes reflecting a confidence that seemed to come from somewhere deep and unshakeable. "Doing this for money?" Blair's voice remained level, almost conversational. "I never wanted money from Finn or the Harrison family. Isn't it you who's always been kissing up to them, playing the perfect little angel in front of them? If not for money, then what else could drive such behavior? Perhaps you're the one who's been controlled by Finn's money and his family's influence all along, Victoria. I chose this path not because of money, but because I know they need to learn a lesson for what they've done to me." The words struck Victoria like physical blows. She let out a low growl of frustration, then stepped forward with a sinister grin twisting her features. "You're lying! This is all about getting a bigger payout, and I can see right through you. Someone as pathetic and poor as you—I can read your mind like an open book." Her voice grew more venomous with each word. "Stop harassing Finn! If you want a divorce, then just divorce! Tell them you don't want to serve the Harrison family anymore. Don't drag company secrets into this, and don't bring up Finn's behavior during your marriage. Whatever Finn did to you, you deserved it! Even they know I'm better for Finn than you ever were. You couldn't even give him a child, humiliating him in front of his entire family..." The mention of children—the one wound that had never fully healed—caused something to flicker across Blair's face, but she quickly masked it. James, however, had heard enough. "Enough!" James stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor as he fixed Victoria with a stern glare. "I've been patient enough listening to your inappropriate comments, Miss Victoria. Mrs. Blair will not be meeting with you again." Victoria's gaze lingered on James for a moment before returning to Blair with undisguised hatred burning in her eyes. "Don't think this ends here," she hissed, her voice dropping to a threatening whisper. "I'll be back if you don't do exactly what Finn and I want. And next time, I'll make sure you regret every choice you've made, Blair." Blair remained unmoved, her expression serene despite the venom being directed at her. "I'm ready to face whatever comes, Victoria." "Come on, Blair. We should leave," James said, rising from his seat with professional dignity intact. Blair followed suit, not even glancing in Victoria's direction as they prepared to leave. This final act of dismissal sent Victoria's rage to new heights. She couldn't believe that someone she had always considered weak and insignificant would dare to treat her with such indifference. Victoria remained seated, watching through the café's large windows as Blair and James made their way to the street. Her eyes narrowed when she saw Blair getting into a sleek, expensive car—the kind of vehicle that cost more than most people's annual salaries. Confusion mixed with her anger as questions flooded her mind. How could someone like Blair afford such luxury? Where had this mysterious wealth come from? Victoria quickly reached for her phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she dialed a familiar number. "Vict? You haven't come back yet?" came Finn's voice from the other end of the line. "Finn! I think I've discovered something important," Victoria said, her earlier fury now replaced by a different kind of excitement—the thrill of having potentially damaging information. "What do you mean?" Finn's voice carried confusion and impatience. "Blair apparently has another man now. She seems to be... cheating on you." The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. Then, like a dam bursting, Finn's rage exploded through the phone. "Cheating? That worthless woman is cheating on me?" Victoria smiled with satisfaction, knowing she had just lit a fuse that would lead to an explosion far beyond anything Blair could be prepared for.
