I had a restless night. As the sun streamed through the window creating strong shafts of light through the blinds, I groaned and dragged myself off my king-size bed. I headed to the shower and tried to clear my thoughts. My beast was unsettled and I could feel him prowling in my mind, scratching beneath the surface. He thought me a fool to not just claim what was ours but he was an instinctual beast and needed to not be so rash.
"You will understand soon," I snarled into the mirror, my eyes beginning to be circled with the red rims of my beast. Cluching the sink I forced him to retreat and towel dried my dark hair.
My room was large and stark. I preferred minimalism. White and black furnishings filled the room.
Alpha Johnsons house had been gawdy. Flashes of wealth littered the place from vases, ornaments and gold gilded features. Artwork filled the rooms and every pattern imaginable was used in the decor. I had hoped Jessica did not have the same tastes but her own designer labels made me think otherwise.
I was very wealthy, but my long life had already taught me it wasn't everything. It helped but it didn't fill the void love could fill. I constantly felt an absence. Maybe this was why I embraced minimalism, it was an outward sign of this absence.
As I finished dressing my phone buzzed. Fishing it out of my pocket I was surprised to see an unknown number. My number was well guarded. Too many sycophants existed that wished to be close to the thrown.
I answered, curious.
"Yes?"
The other line was silent.
"I don't have all day," I growled.
"Umm...maybe this was a bad idea..." An angelic voice apologised instantly making me go hard.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
She hung up after a simple few words gave me a raging b***r.
Hastily I called back. It only took two rings for Kate to answer.
"Sorry, it is just early in the morning. I thought it was a prank," I rushed out, internally groaning at my lame lie.
"It's okay. Sorry I woke you. I just, I need to talk to you and...I'm going to sound insane..." I could hear chatter in the background and my wolf hearing determined she must be on a bus to school. It made sense as she lived at the far edge of the territory.
"I won't think you are insane," I reassure her but my curiosity was beyond my control. I couldn't hide it in my voice.
"Ha...well...you haven't heard me out yet but thank you. I can't discuss this here and now. Can you meet me privately. And no funny business!" The last was rushed and I could tell she was thinking of our cubical session. Hell, thinking about it enlarged my election more making me readjust for some pain relief.
"If we must. where?" I put on a bored voice to try and hide my excitement at the prospect of round two. I could tell she'd never meet me if she suspected my alterior motives.
"Behind the cafeteria, there is a spare storage room that no one uses except the kitchen staff in the evening to clear stuff up. How early will you be in school? I'll be there in about 20 minutes..."
"In that much of a hurry?" I didn't wait for a reply, " I'll be there in 20 too."
Awkward silence prevailed on the other end until I heard a shake, "Thank you." and she hung up.
That last thank you made me forget my election. It clenched my heart. something was off with Kate.
