A Father's Love

Sophia The orchestra played softly as Dad and I swayed across the dance floor. "You know," he said with a mischievous smile, "I still remember when you were sixteen and tried sneaking out through your bedroom window." I groaned. "Dad..." "You got halfway out before your dress got caught on the window latch." A few nearby guests burst into laughter. "You had to carry me back inside," I muttered, trying not to laugh myself. "I certainly did," he replied proudly. "Then you spent an hour explaining why climbing out of a window wasn't technically sneaking out because you weren't using the front door." "Oh my goodness..." I covered my face in embarrassment. "I can't believe you're telling everyone this." He laughed. "I have twenty-one years' worth of stories. I've barely started." I shook my head. "I officially regret dancing with you." Before he could expose another embarrassing childhood memory, a familiar voice interrupted us. "Grandpa." Henry approached with an amused smile. "I believe it's my turn." Dad chuckled before placing my hand in Henry's. "Take good care of my princess." "I always do." Henry bowed dramatically. "May I have this dance, birthday girl?" I rolled my eyes. "Only because you're family." He grinned. "Twenty-one already? You know you're getting old." "Oh, be quiet." "I'm serious. You'll start complaining about back pain soon." I lightly smacked his arm. "Henry!" He laughed even harder. "I brought your gifts." I raised an eyebrow. "Gifts? As in... plural?" He winked. "You'll find out later." We danced together for only a minute before he leaned closer. "I'll let you get back to your guests before Grandpa accuses me of stealing his daughter." I smiled. "Thank you." "My pleasure, Princess." As I turned to leave the dance floor, I suddenly felt the back of my gown tighten beneath someone's shoe. My heart skipped. Oh no... I instinctively braced myself for the inevitable fall. But it never came. A strong arm slipped securely around my waist, steadying me before I could lose my balance. I slowly looked up. Standing before me was... Mrs Ruby's son. Or so I thought. Unfortunately, I'd been introduced to so many people that evening that I couldn't even remember his name. "Th-thank you..." I smiled awkwardly. "For catching me." He smiled back. "You're welcome..." "Princess." Princess? His voice sounded much deeper than I remembered. Strangely... There was something different about him. Before I could think any further— "Hi, Sophia!" I turned. Victoria's friends. Wonderful. "Happy birthday!" "Thank you," I replied politely. My assistant gently lifted the train of my gown as I excused myself. I wasn't in the mood for unnecessary conversations. Especially not with them. Inside my dressing room, Mum was already waiting. "Hurry. Help her change quickly. They'll be calling her back any minute." Calling me? For what? Before I could ask, my stylist and designer immediately got to work. The moment they loosened my corset... I released a long breath. "I can finally breathe again." Everyone burst into laughter. After another quick makeup touch-up, I slipped into my second outfit. A champagne-coloured satin evening dress hugged my figure perfectly before falling gracefully above my knees. Delicate crystal embellishments shimmered beneath the lights, making the dress sparkle with every movement. Elegant. Sophisticated. Absolutely breathtaking. I slowly turned in front of the mirror. I loved it. "You look stunning," Mum whispered proudly. Just then, Vanessa walked in. "My friends are here." "Already?" She nodded. "They're waiting in the hall." I glanced at my phone. 9:10 p.m. "We'll leave in about an hour." She smiled knowingly. The real birthday adventure... Was only just beginning. Just then, Dad's cheerful voice echoed through the ballroom. "Oh! There she is. My lovely Princess." Every conversation came to a halt. All eyes turned toward me as I stepped out of the dressing room and made my way back into the hall. Dad stood on the stage holding a microphone. He smiled warmly as I approached before taking my hand and kissing the back of it affectionately. "Ladies and gentlemen," he began, his voice filled with pride, "today we celebrate my daughter, Sophia Amanda Smith, as she turns twenty-one." A warm round of applause filled the ballroom. I smiled, unaware that Dad still had one more surprise waiting for me. Dad smiled proudly before continuing. "You know... people often say it's difficult to start over after losing everything. I used to think they were exaggerating." The smile on his face softened. "But my wife and I learned what those words truly meant. After raising our children, life unexpectedly gave us another chance to become parents again instead of simply remaining grandparents." The ballroom grew quiet. His voice became heavier with emotion. "Sophia's life is nothing short of a miracle. A beautiful reminder of the love my late son, Mark, shared with his wife, Elizabeth." My heart tightened. I lowered my head, trying to stop the tears gathering in my eyes. The accident... The one that had taken my parents. The one that had almost taken me too. I had grown up calling my grandparents Mum and Dad because they had loved me enough to fill the emptiness my parents left behind. Before I realised it, Mum slipped an arm around my shoulders. Dad smiled at her before looking back at the guests. "Watching Sophia grow into the young woman she is today has been one of the greatest blessings of our lives. She has filled this home with laughter and made us proud in more ways than she will ever know." His own eyes glistened. "And today... I know Mark and Elizabeth would be incredibly proud of the woman their daughter has become." A tear escaped before I could stop it. Dad chuckled softly. "Don't cry, Princess. You'll ruin that beautiful makeup." Warm laughter spread through the ballroom, easing the emotional atmosphere. He squeezed my hand gently. "Now..." "I have one final birthday surprise for you." Another surprise? I stared at him in confusion. Hadn't he already given me a Rolex that morning? What else could he possibly have planned?
