Morning came without rest.
Lena hadn’t truly slept.
Every time her eyes closed, she felt it again the bond stretching painfully between her and Kael like an invisible thread pulled too tight. Even distance couldn’t silence it. His emotions brushed faintly against hers: frustration, exhaustion… restraint.
And worst of all
Regret.
Her wolf stirred restlessly beneath her skin, confused and wounded.
Mates don’t leave, it seemed to cry.
But hers had.
Lena forced herself out of bed before sunrise. Work helped. Healing helped. Keeping her hands busy stopped her mind from replaying the balcony over and over again.
The healer’s den smelled of herbs and crushed leaves, familiar and grounding. Shelves lined the walls, filled with remedies gathered from forests she had walked since childhood.
Her mother, Mara Hart, glanced up as Lena entered.
Concern flashed immediately across her face.
“You’re early.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Lena replied, avoiding her gaze as she began organizing supplies.
Mara watched her quietly for a moment before speaking again.
“The entire pack knows.”
Of course they did.
News traveled faster than wildfire among wolves.
Lena kept working. “There’s nothing to know.”
Her mother sighed gently. “Child… fate bonds are sacred. People noticed what happened.”
What happened.
Such simple words for something that felt like her heart had been split open.
“I’m fine,” Lena said quickly.
The lie tasted bitter.
Before Mara could respond, the den doors burst open.
Two warriors rushed in carrying an injured patrol guard.
Blood soaked through his uniform.
“Rogue attack near the western border!” one shouted.
Instinct took over instantly.
Lena moved forward without hesitation. “Lay him here.”
The warrior groaned as she examined deep claw wounds across his ribs. The cuts were precise too precise for ordinary rogues.
Her brows furrowed.
“These aren’t random strikes,” she murmured while cleaning the injury.
“What do you mean?” Mara asked.
“They aimed to disable, not kill.”
Strategic.
Intentional.
Unsettling.
As Lena worked, she felt it again a sudden pull through the mate bond.
Kael.
He was nearby.
Her hands faltered for half a second before she forced herself to continue.
Heavy footsteps approached outside.
The air shifted instantly as authority entered the room.
Kael Arden stepped inside.
Conversation died immediately.
Even injured, the warriors straightened respectfully.
He looked every bit the future Alpha now commanding, composed… untouchable.
Except his eyes found hers immediately.
The bond flared painfully alive.
Emotion surged across it concern sharp enough to steal her breath.
His concern.
Lena lowered her gaze quickly, focusing on bandaging instead.
Professional.
Distant.
Exactly what he wanted.
“What happened?” Kael asked the warriors.
“Unknown attackers,” one replied. “They knew patrol timing.”
Kael’s expression darkened.
“Inside information,” he muttered.
A traitor.
The word hung unspoken but understood.
Lena finished tying the bandage just as the injured guard grabbed her wrist weakly.
“They moved like pack wolves,” he rasped. “Not rogues.”
Unease settled heavily in the room.
Kael nodded once. “Increase border security.”
As warriors exited, silence remained behind.
Only Lena, her mother… and Kael.
She felt his gaze long before she looked up.
“You should rest,” he said quietly.
The gentleness in his voice almost hurt more than rejection.
“I’m working,” she replied evenly.
His jaw tightened.
The distance between them felt unnatural two halves forced apart.
Kael stepped closer instinctively.
Her wolf reacted immediately, warmth blooming painfully in her chest.
Then she stepped back.
A small movement.
But deliberate.
Understanding flashed across his face.
You wanted distance.
So here it is.
Something unreadable passed through his eyes before he nodded stiffly and left.
The moment he disappeared, Lena released a breath she hadn’t realized she held.
Her mother studied her carefully.
“He cares,” Mara said softly.
Lena shook her head. “Not enough.”
By afternoon, whispers followed Lena everywhere.
Near the training grounds
“She’s the rejected mate.”
“At least he didn’t formally reject her.”
“Future Alphas need stronger Lunas.”
Each word landed like stones.
She ignored them.
Mostly.
But loneliness settled deeper with every passing hour.
As evening approached, Lena escaped toward the forest the only place that still felt honest.
Moonlight filtered through towering trees as she walked familiar paths.
Here, she could breathe.
Here, she wasn’t judged.
A strange scent caught her attention suddenly.
Metallic.
Cold.
Unfamiliar.
Her healer instincts sharpened instantly.
She followed it cautiously deeper into the woods until voices reached her ears.
Low.
Whispered.
She crouched behind thick brush.
Two figures stood ahead wolves cloaked in shadow.
Not Ravenridge warriors.
Their scents were wrong.
“…the bond exists,” one voice said.
“And the Alpha hesitates?”
A soft chuckle followed.
“Perfect. A fractured mate bond weakens both.”
Lena’s heartbeat thundered.
They were talking about
Her foot snapped a twig.
Silence fell instantly.
Both figures turned.
Golden eyes glowed in the darkness.
Fear shot through her spine.
Run.
She turned
But a powerful force slammed into her chest, freezing her in place.
Magic.
Dark and suffocating.
One stranger stepped forward slowly.
“So this is her,” he murmured. “The key to Ravenridge’s fall.”
Panic surged.
Before he could reach her
A furious growl ripped through the forest.
Kael burst from the trees in wolf form, massive and terrifying, silver fur gleaming beneath moonlight.
Pure Alpha dominance exploded outward.
The strangers retreated instantly.
“This isn’t over,” one called before vanishing into shadow.
Silence returned.
Kael shifted back into human form moments later, breathing hard.
His eyes scanned her frantically.
“Are you hurt?”
Lena shook her head, still shaken.
“How did you”
“I felt fear through the bond,” he admitted.
The confession lingered between them.
Even rejected…
He still came.
Kael stepped closer, voice low.
“You shouldn’t walk alone anymore.”
Lena met his gaze.
“And yet you wanted distance.”
Pain crossed his face again.
Before either could speak further, distant alarm howls echoed across pack territory.
Emergency call.
Kael’s expression hardened instantly.
“This is only the beginning,” he said grimly.
And somewhere deep inside, Lena realized something terrifying.
The danger wasn’t random.
Someone knew about their bond.
And whoever it was…
Had already started hunting her.
