Truths unveiled

My legs give out. I don’t even realize I’m falling until my knees hit the ground. The alley spins slightly, the world tilting as everything that just happened crashes into me all at once. “They said… I awakened,” I whisper, my voice barely steady. “What does that mean?” The hooded figure watches me for a moment, silent. Calm. Like none of this surprises them. “It means,” they finally say, “you’ve crossed the line.” I look up sharply. “What line?” “The one between ordinary… and everything else.” My chest tightens. “That doesn’t explain anything,” I snap, frustration rising through the fear. “Who are those people? Why were they chasing me? And what just happened to me?!” For a moment, I think they won’t answer. Then slowly… they reach up. And pull back the hood. I freeze. It’s not what I expected. Not older. Not terrifying. Not mysterious in the way I imagined. Just… a girl. Maybe a few years older than me. Calm eyes. Sharp, observant. The kind of face that doesn’t miss anything. “I’m not your enemy, Riley,” she says quietly. My heart is still racing. “Then start talking.” She studies me for a second, like she’s deciding how much to say. “My name is Nyra.” The name settles in the air between us. “Those men,” Nyra continues, “aren’t random. They belong to a group that hunts people like you.” My stomach drops. “People like me?” She nods. “Awakened.” The word sends a chill down my spine. “What does that even mean?” I ask, quieter now. Nyra steps closer, her voice steady. “It means you have something inside you most people don’t. Power. Not the kind you learn… the kind you’re born with.” I shake my head immediately. “No. That’s not possible. I’m just—” “Just weak?” she interrupts. The word hits hard. Cassandra’s voice echoes in my head. Useless. Weak. Nyra’s gaze doesn’t soften. “You’ve been told that your whole life,” she says. “So you believe it.” Silence stretches between us. “Then what was that?” I ask, my voice trembling again. “What did I do back there?” Nyra exhales slowly. “You pushed them away without touching them. That wasn’t luck.” My eyes widen. “That was you.” I stare at my hands. They don’t look different. They don’t feel different. But I know what I saw. What I felt. “That shouldn’t be possible…” I whisper. “It is now,” Nyra says. I shake my head again, trying to ground myself. “Why me?” Nyra’s expression changes slightly. Something more serious. “Because of your parents.” Everything in me goes still. “My… parents?” She nods once. “They weren’t ordinary either.” The world feels like it just tilted again. “That’s not true,” I say quickly. “They were just—” “Were they?” Nyra cuts in. I open my mouth… then stop. I don’t actually know. Not really. All I have are memories. Fragments. Feelings. Not answers. “They hid it from you,” Nyra continues. “To protect you.” “Protect me from what?” “From this.” The alley suddenly feels too small. Too tight. “So now what?” I ask, my voice quieter. “They’re gone. And these people are after me. What am I supposed to do?” Nyra doesn’t hesitate. “You learn.” I blink. “Learn what?” “How to control it.” My heart skips. “You think I can just… control whatever that was?” “You have to.” Her tone leaves no room for argument. “Because next time…” she adds, her eyes locking onto mine, “…they won’t come unprepared.” A chill runs through me. I push myself to my feet slowly. My legs still feel weak, but something else is there now too—something new. Determination. “What do I need to do?” I ask. Nyra studies me for a moment… then nods slightly. “Tomorrow. After school. Same place.” “The warehouse?” “Yes.” I hesitate. Then nod. “Okay.” Nyra steps back, already pulling her hood up again. “Get some rest,” she says. “You’ll need it.” And just like that— She disappears into the shadows. Gone. I stand there alone, my heart still racing, my mind spinning with everything I’ve just learned. My whole life… was a lie. And now, I’m being pulled into something I don’t understand. Something dangerous. Something bigger than me. But for the first time… I’m not just scared. I’m ready.
