The taxi driver loaded Lila’s suitcase into the trunk without much conversation, the jazz music playing low on the car radio as they pulled away from the hotel. The sun was setting over the French Quarter, casting a golden glow on the crooked iron balconies and mossy stone sidewalks.
Lila leaned her head against the window, watching the streets blur past, her heart heavy.
This trip was supposed to be fun, she thought. A break from reality. Not a mystery I’ll never solve.
As the car turned down Royal Street, she sat up straighter. “Can we stop?” she asked suddenly. “Right here.”
The driver raised an eyebrow but pulled to the curb. “You got five minutes, miss.”
She stepped out, letting the humid air wrap around her like a shroud. She stood across from the mansion. The one from the tour. The one they said once belonged to vampires. Its windows were still boarded, ivy creeping up the walls like veins, strangling the stone.
But tonight… it felt alive.
A warm breeze lifted her hair, brushing across her cheek like a whisper.
“Brielle?” she murmured, heart thudding.
A soft laugh echoed—faint, musical, just on the edge of hearing. Not frightening. Familiar.
And then she saw it—a figure on the balcony.
A woman in a flowing dark gown. Her face hidden behind a pale mask. She stood perfectly still, bathed in moonlight, watching.
Lila took a step forward. “Bri…?”
The woman raised her hand slowly in a parting wave.
Then turned, disappearing into the shadows behind her.
Lila stood frozen, eyes brimming with tears.
She didn’t know how or why—but she knew.
Brielle was okay.
She was safe.
Changed, yes… but free. More alive now than she had ever been.
Lila whispered into the quiet street, voice thick with emotion.
“Goodbye, Bri.”
She climbed back into the taxi.
As they drove toward the airport, she didn’t look back.
Some stories don’t need endings.
