The Night That Held It's Breath (Part1)

As Nova studied the dress she’d chosen for the evening, a soft smile tugged at her lips. She knew she’d made the right decision. “I’m so glad I bought this when I did. I had no idea I’d need it tonight.” She still had plenty of time before she needed to leave, and her mind drifted to how she might fill the next hour when her phone suddenly rang. William. “Did he change his mind?” The thought flickered through her, but she dismissed it just as quickly. It would be ridiculous for him to travel all this way only to back out now. “Hello, William.” “Hello, beautiful. Are you ready to go yet?” His voice carried a playful tease that warmed her instantly. “Of course not, William. It’s still too early. I was just about to get into the tub and soak for a bit before I do anything else. What about you?” “The same—minus the tub,” he chuckled. “But we never settled on a time to meet tonight. Would you like me to come pick you up? I have a car and driver for the evening, so it’s no trouble. Or would you rather meet at the party?” William’s thoughtfulness never failed to touch her. The idea of seeing him before the party sent a jolt through her—equal parts excitement and nerves. As much as she wanted to be near him, she also needed a little time to mentally prepare. “I tell you what,” Nova said. “I hired a driver for tonight too. I planned on driving myself, but I had a small glass of wine. I’m sure it wasn’t enough to impair anything, but better safe than sorry.” “I agree completely,” William replied. “That’s exactly why I hired a driver as well—just in case we both decided to have a drink tonight.” “I like how your mind works, William. We’re definitely aligned.” They’d talked enough over the past few days that she didn’t feel the need to explain the wine or the possibility of drinking later. “I tell you what,” William said after a thoughtful pause. “Since you already have a driver, why don’t you have him drop you off at the party? Then afterward, we can use my driver to take us home. I’ve already paid him to be available all evening, so it’s no inconvenience.” The suggestion sent Nova’s heart into a soft, excited hum. “Oh, William, that would be perfect. That way we can spend more time together.” William felt a quiet relief settle into his chest when Nova agreed to leave the party with him later. He hadn’t realized how long he’d been in planning mode — thinking through details, imagining the evening, hoping everything would unfold just right. But the moment she consented, his breath eased, and the night ahead suddenly felt beautifully real. “My thoughts exactly, sweetheart,” William said, a smile warming his voice as much as his heart. “I’m sure you still have a few things to do before tonight.” “I do, William. You?” “Not too much. But I realized we never decided what time we’d meet at the party. And could you send me the address?” “Oh, yes. My boss is opening his home at 7 p.m. I’m sure a few people will show up early, but since it’s a New Year’s Eve party, most won’t arrive until after eight or even nine. What do you think?” “Why don’t we meet in the middle and get there around 8:30?” Truthfully, he would’ve happily shown up at seven just to see her sooner. But he also knew Nova appreciated having space to prepare — not just physically, but emotionally. “I think 8:30 would be perfect! I wish I could be ready sooner because I really want to see you, but my driver isn’t available until eight. I’ll call and confirm the timing so I can get there with plenty of time to meet you.” William adored this about her — the way she planned, the way she considered every detail, the way her thoughtfulness never felt rigid but warm, intentional, inviting. “That’s perfect, Nova. I can’t wait to see you, honey.” “Same here. See you soon, my dear William. Bye for now.” She blew him a kiss through the phone — soft, playful, unmistakable. William’s smile deepened. “Yes… bye for now, my sweet Nova.” Hanging up was harder than either of them wanted to admit. Nova stared at her phone for a moment, then laughed softly. “Why do we always do that?” It was true — every conversation ended with the same gentle tug-of-war, neither wanting to be the first to let go. “Maybe we should assign someone to hang up first,” she joked to herself. “But knowing us, that might not work either.” Her laughter faded into a thoughtful quiet. The truth settled over her with surprising clarity: what she felt for William wasn’t a fantasy, wasn’t a passing crush. Her feelings were strong — stronger than she’d expected — and when she pictured her future, he was simply there, woven into it without effort. She knew that if he ever chose to walk away, it would hurt deeply. But she also hoped, with a tenderness that made her chest ache, that what they were building together was more than affection — something real, something lasting, something worth stepping into with her whole heart. Nova realized she had been thinking about William more intensely than she ever had before. The realization made her pause midmovement, her hands stilling as her thoughts drifted. Maybe it’s because I actually have time, she mused. Normally her days were ruled by schedules, deadlines, and the constant hum of responsibility — structure that kept her grounded and prevented her from spending entire afternoons daydreaming about him, no matter how much she wanted to. But today… today she had hours. Luxurious, unclaimed hours. And letting her mind wander to William felt like a rare indulgence she wasn’t used to allowing herself. She savored it, even as she kept reminding herself to stay on track so she wouldn’t end up rushing to be ready by 8 p.m. Every time she drifted off to her own private Neverland, the clock seemed to leap forward without mercy.
