“Can I have everyone’s attention,” shouted Henry, cutting through the noise of the office. “I don’t usually let you leave early on New Year’s Eve, but we just got the report—our team hit its highest sales goal, making us the second top company in the marketing
world! You deserve to be celebrated, and I congratulate you all for a job well done!”
The room erupted, cheers filling the air at both the accomplishment and the promise of an early night. Henry raised his voice again. “I hope you’ll join me later for festivities as we eat, drink, and dance into the new year!” The office nearly went into a frenzy.
“Now, before you lose focus, we still have an hour of work to finish. I expect the same commitment I’ve seen all year until we walk out the door. Just know I am proud of each of you. Congratulations again for bringing your A-game!”
The excitement of the evening ahead was distracting, but with Henry’s words in mind, we pushed through the final tasks.
As if on cue, my friend Aria leaned into my workspace. “Girl, tell me you’re going to the party tonight. There’s no way I’m letting you miss it this year.”
I smiled. Aria always tried to pull me into fun, while I stayed the “all work, no play” type. My parents had worked hard but, in my eyes, had little to show for it. I wanted more—and for them to be proud.
Just then, my phone rang. William’s name lit up the caller ID. My heart raced. Tonight could change everything.
