Chapter 11: Fractured Alliances
Adrian's POV
The main house had never felt so small—not with all of them in it. Richard stood rigid by the tall windows, his silhouette sharp against the afternoon light. Eleanor hovered near the side table like she might dissolve into the wallpaper at any moment. Vanessa lingered by the doorway, elegant and poisonous, her gaze tracking every movement in the room like a spider counting flies.
Leo tugged on Elena's hand again, his small voice cutting through the tension. "Can we go see the ducks now? The man by the trees said they were friendly."
The room went still. Every breath seemed to stop.
Elena knelt quickly, her voice dropping to something soft and careful. "What man, baby?"
Leo shrugged, already distracted by a shiny paperweight on the side table. "The one who waved. He said ducks like breadcrumbs."
My blood ran cold. I caught Elena's eye across the room—the fear there mirrored my own. Someone had gotten close enough to talk to my son on our own grounds. Our grounds. The thought turned my stomach.
Richard cleared his throat, the sound too deliberate. "Adrian, we need to discuss this privately. The company cannot afford scandals. Mergers. Reputation."
"Reputation?" I stepped forward, my voice dropping low. "Your grandson was threatened on our own property. Vanessa has been destroying lives for years to keep her claws in this family."
Vanessa smiled, smooth as ever. "Darling, these are serious accusations. Where's the proof beyond some old papers and a desperate woman's story?"
Elena stood slowly, keeping Leo behind her. Her voice was steady, but I could see her hands trembling at her sides. "Proof is in the folder. Payments. Destroyed letters. You made sure I thought Adrian abandoned us. Made sure he thought I left."
Eleanor's hands trembled as she set down a glass. "Richard… I saw one of the letters years ago. You told me it was for the best. That Elena wasn't… suitable."
The words landed heavy, knocking the air from the room. Richard's face tightened, his jaw working. "For the family. For the company."
Margaret's voice cut through like a blade. "Pride has cost this family enough, son. Look at the boy. Really look."
Leo peeked around Elena's leg, his gray eyes—my eyes—curious and unafraid. The resemblance hit Richard too. I saw it in the way his shoulders shifted, the brief flicker across his face before the mask slid back into place.
Vanessa stepped closer to Richard, her voice honeyed. "This is exactly what I warned you about. Emotional decisions. Complications."
I moved between them, shielding Elena and Leo with my body. "You're done, Vanessa. Security is already tracing the latest threats. The PI. The messages. It ends today."
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I ignored it at first. Then it buzzed again. And again.
Elena's phone went off too. She pulled it out, her face paling as she read the screen.
"Ducks are hungry today. So is the press if certain photos leak. Tick tock. – A friend"
Attached was another photo. Leo by the pond. Taken minutes ago. From inside the grounds.
"Outside," I said sharply. "Now."
Security swarmed the lawn as we moved. The man was gone again, melted into the trees like smoke. But the message was clear as glass. They could reach us here. They were already here.
Richard watched it all with narrowed eyes. "This is getting out of hand. Vanessa, perhaps you should—"
"No." Her voice stayed sweet, but her eyes were ice. "I've protected this family for years. From gold-diggers. From mistakes."
Elena stepped forward, her voice steady even though her hands shook. "I'm not here for money. I'm here for my son. Our son. And I'm not running anymore."
Leo looked up at all the adults, his small face confused. "Is the prince angry?"
The innocence in his voice cracked something in me. I knelt and picked him up, holding him close for the first time. He was lighter than I expected. Warm. Real. My son. The weight of him in my arms grounded me in a way nothing else could.
Richard watched us, his jaw working. Eleanor's eyes softened, and for a moment I thought I saw a c***k in her carefully constructed distance.
Vanessa's smile finally slipped. "Careful, Adrian. Some choices can't be undone."
My phone buzzed one more time. A video this time. Security footage from the estate gate—the same man from earlier, but now clearly carrying something small. A package. Left near the wall.
Marcus's text followed immediately.
"Bomb threat called in. Package at the east wall. Evacuating now."
I looked at Elena. At Leo in my arms. At my family fracturing around us like glass under pressure.
"We're leaving," I said. "All of us. Now."
But as security rushed in, Vanessa's voice carried across the room, soft and final.
"Too late for that, darling. The real storm is just starting."
The package outside. The threats. My father's cold calculation. Vanessa's calm certainty.
We were no longer just fighting for the truth.
We were fighting to survive it.
