Chapter 10: The Truth Revealed

572 Words
Maya sat across from Dr. Carson in the small, dimly lit room. She had expected him to be more aggressive, to demand answers to her questions, but instead he sat back calmly in his chair, watching her with a detached interest. "I'm surprised to see you here, Maya," he said, folding his hands in his lap. "I had thought you would have given up after the attack." "I'm not one to give up easily," Maya replied, her eyes locked onto his. "Indeed," Dr. Carson said with a small nod. "So, what is it that you want to know?" Maya took a deep breath, steadying herself. "I want to know about the cryptids. The ones that you and your colleagues have been studying for years." Dr. Carson's lips twisted into a wry smile. "I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone figured it out. Yes, we have been studying them. But not just studying, Maya. We have been capturing them." Maya's heart began to race. "Capturing them? For what purpose?" Dr. Carson leaned forward, his eyes suddenly intense. "To study them, of course. To understand them. But also for their value. Some of the cryptids we've captured are incredibly rare, and their worth on the black market is astronomical." Maya's eyes widened in shock. "You're selling them?" Dr. Carson shook his head. "Not directly. We have intermediaries, people who know how to move these kinds of creatures without getting caught. But yes, ultimately, they end up in the hands of wealthy collectors, who keep them locked up in private zoos or use them for their own purposes." Maya felt sick to her stomach. "And what about the attacks? Are they connected to your work with the cryptids?" Dr. Carson's expression turned sour. "Yes, unfortunately. We've had a few incidents where our captives have escaped, and that's when the attacks happen. We've been trying to cover it up, to keep it quiet, but we can only do so much." Maya shook her head in disbelief. "This is insane. You're putting people's lives at risk for money." Dr. Carson leaned back in his chair. "It's not that simple, Maya. We are doing important work here, work that could change the course of human history. The world is changing, and we need to be ready for it." Maya stood up, feeling a surge of anger. "You're a monster, Dr. Carson. I won't let you get away with this." Dr. Carson smiled thinly. "You won't be able to stop us, Maya. We're too powerful, too well-connected. But I do admire your tenacity. Perhaps we could use someone like you on our team." Maya's fists clenched at her sides. "I would never work for you." Dr. Carson shrugged. "Suit yourself. But just remember, Maya, we are always watching. And if you try to interfere with our work, we will stop you. By any means necessary." Maya turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, her mind racing with a thousand different thoughts and emotions. She had uncovered the truth about the cryptids, but at what cost? She had put herself in danger, and she had learned that the people behind it all were even more powerful and ruthless than she had imagined. But she also knew that she couldn't back down. She had to keep fighting, keep pushing for the truth. And if that meant putting herself at risk, then so be it.
