The morning light spilled through the curtains soft and golden touching everything it met like it wanted to make the world forget the darkness of the night before But no amount of light could erase the way his kiss still lingered on my lips or the ache in my chest that whispered I was in far too deep
Austin was already dressed when I opened my eyes his white shirt half-buttoned his tie hanging loose around his neck He looked tired like a man who’d been fighting battles no one could see
“You’re leaving” I said my voice barely more than a whisper
He paused adjusting his cuffs “There’s something I have to handle You’ll be safe here I promise”
Safe That word had started to sound like a lie between us
I sat up clutching the sheet around me “You keep saying that but you never tell me what’s really going on”
His jaw tightened “Because the truth won’t make you safer It’ll only put a target on your back like it did on mine”
I stood walked up to him until our faces were inches apart “You can’t protect me from something I don’t understand Austin If you want me to trust you—really trust you—then stop hiding”
He looked at me for a long moment his eyes shadowed with something that felt like regret Then slowly he reached into his pocket pulled out a black flash drive small simple but heavy with meaning “Everything I’ve been running from everything I’ve been trying to keep you out of—it’s on this”
“What is it” I asked
“Proof” he said quietly “of people who destroy lives for profit people who’d rather see the world burn than lose their power And I used to be one of them until I found something worth more than the money”
“Me” I whispered before I could stop myself
His smile was soft sad “You You made me remember who I was before the lies before the danger”
The silence between us stretched thin fragile His hand brushed mine the warmth of his touch grounding me even as his words made my heart race
“What happens now” I asked
He looked away “Now I disappear before they come for you too”
“No” I said instantly the word sharp “You’re not doing this alone not anymore”
He laughed quietly no humor in it “You don’t know what you’re saying Vera This isn’t something you can walk away from once you’re in”
“Then don’t walk away from me” I said my voice shaking “Whatever this is we’ll face it together”
He stepped closer his breath mingling with mine “You have no idea what you’re asking”
“Yes I do” I whispered “I’m asking you to stop pretending you don’t need someone to fight for you too”
He closed his eyes like the words hurt and then he kissed me again rough and deep and desperate as if he was trying to memorize me one last time
When he finally pulled away he rested his forehead against mine “You’ll regret this"
“Maybe” I said “But at least it’ll be my choice"
The flash drive felt cold in my hand when he placed it there “If I don’t make it back” he said “You’ll know what to do"
“You’ll make it back” I said quickly “You have to"
He smiled faintly and turned away the sound of rain starting again outside as if the world itself was holding its breath
Hours passed like days after he left I couldn’t sit still my heart pacing faster than my thoughts I turned the flash drive over and over in my hands the tiny object that suddenly held both our fates I didn’t know what kind of enemies we were up against but I knew one thing—whatever Austin was running from was now running toward me
When night fell I heard the door unlock My heart leapt before my mind could catch up but it wasn’t Austin
Two men in dark suits stepped inside their faces cold unreadable “Miss Lane” one of them said “We need to talk about Mr Cole"
I tried to keep my voice steady “He’s not here"
“We know” the taller one replied “That’s why we’re here"
They moved closer their presence filling the room like smoke “He gave you something didn’t he"
I forced a shrug “I don’t know what you’re talking about"
“Don’t lie to us” the other said his tone calm but sharp “People who do usually don’t live long enough to regret it"
My pulse roared in my ears but I stood my ground “If you’re trying to scare me it’s working but I still don’t know what you want"
The taller man leaned forward eyes narrowing “The drive Miss Lane Where is it"
Before I could answer the door burst open Austin stormed in like a storm given human form his eyes dark his voice dangerous “Step away from her"
The men turned but not fast enough In a blur Austin had one of them against the wall his forearm pressing hard against his throat “You think you can touch her and walk out alive" he hissed
The other man reached for his gun but I screamed “Austin” and he turned fast pulling me behind him His hand found mine firm and steady “Run” he said
We did
Down the stairs through the rain across the dim parking lot until my lungs burned and my bare feet slapped against the wet pavement He opened the car door shoved the drive into my hand and gunned the engine The world outside became a blur of lights and water
“Where are we going" I asked breathless
“Somewhere they can’t find us” he said his knuckles white against the steering wheel
For a long time neither of us spoke the hum of the engine and the rhythm of the rain the only sounds between us Finally I turned to him “You came back"
He looked at me then eyes softer now “I told you I would"
I leaned closer resting my hand on his chest feeling the rapid beat beneath my palm “Next time don’t make me doubt it"
He caught my hand pressing a kiss against my wrist “Next time I won’t leave at all"
The car sped through the storm two hearts chasing the edge of dawn and even though danger still waited somewhere ahead for the first time it didn’t matter Because whatever we were running from it had already lost
Because we had each other
And sometimes love itself is the most dangerous secret of all
He slowed the car as dawn began to stretch across the horizon painting the clouds in soft pink and gold The storm had passed but my heart was still racing the silence between us heavy with unspoken words and the hum of everything we’d just escaped
Austin’s hand found mine again warm steady grounding “You’re shaking” he said quietly
“I’m fine" I lied though my pulse told another story
He pulled over by an empty field the mist still rising off the grass The world felt still almost sacred after all the chaos “You shouldn’t have come after me Vera" he said softly “You don’t know what it cost me to keep you out of this"
I turned toward him brushing his cheek with trembling fingers “Then don’t keep me out anymore You don’t have to fight alone"
For a long moment he just stared at me like he was memorizing the way I looked in that fragile light Then he leaned in and kissed me slow deep full of everything we hadn’t said “You make me want things I shouldn’t want" he whispered against my lips “peace love forever"
“Then want them anyway" I whispered back “Want them with me"
He smiled that rare real smile that reached his eyes and in that moment I knew I’d found the one place in the world where I truly belonged in the heart of a man the world called dangerous but who felt like home
The first rays of sunlight broke through the clouds and he whispered almost to himself “Maybe love is the only thing worth risking everything for"
And as I rested my head against his shoulder I finally believed him
Because whatever came next we were no longer running from the storm
We were walking into it together.
