Chapter twelve : The Way He Said My Name

1500 Words
The rain had stopped by morning but the quiet it left behind felt heavier than the storm Austin was in the kitchen when I woke his back to me his hair a little messy from sleep and the sleeves of his shirt rolled up showing the veins that always caught my attention He moved with calm precision pouring coffee like a man trying to hold himself together I leaned on the doorway watching him “You make it look like an art” I said softly He turned his head just enough for a small smile to appear “It’s survival I don’t function without coffee” I walked closer until I could feel the heat of his body his scent wrapping around me like warmth and danger mixed “Then maybe I should make sure you never run out” He glanced at me his eyes catching the morning light “You already give me enough reason to wake up” he said simply and it hit me right in the chest like a confession he didn’t mean to let slip For a moment neither of us moved The silence between us hummed with everything unspoken Then he reached out brushing a strand of hair from my face his fingers tracing my jaw slow tender careful like he was memorizing me “You’re trouble” he murmured “and I’m starting to like it too much” “Then stop pretending you don’t” I whispered His hand dropped but his gaze didn’t waver “You don’t know what you’re asking for” “Maybe not” I said “but I know what I feel” And before he could speak again I kissed him It wasn’t desperate this time It was soft slow deep the kind of kiss that felt like a promise of forever even if forever wasn’t ours to have When he finally pulled away his forehead rested against mine “You make me forget everything I swore I’d protect you from” “Then maybe I’m meant to remind you what it feels like to live” I whispered He smiled a little brokenly and held me close “You already have” The world outside was still gray but inside his arms everything felt bright alive real And for that moment that was enough We stayed like that for a while wrapped in quiet warmth his heartbeat steady beneath my palm Every time I breathed him in I wondered how I ever survived before this before him When he finally spoke his voice was low against my hair “If things were different I’d take you somewhere far away somewhere safe” “Maybe I don’t want safe” I said “Maybe I just want you” He laughed softly but there was no humor in it “You don’t know how dangerous that sounds” “Then teach me” I whispered looking up at him “Show me what you’re so afraid of” For a second something flickered in his eyes pain maybe or fear or love trying too hard not to be seen “If I show you” he said “you won’t see me the same way again” I reached for his hand threading my fingers through his “Then let me decide that” He looked down at our joined hands and sighed the sound breaking something inside me “You’re stubborn” “I learned from the best” I said smiling softly That made him laugh finally a real laugh one that warmed the air between us He pulled me closer again his hand resting against the small of my back “You make it impossible to stay away” “Good” I whispered “because I’m not letting you go” The words slipped out before I could stop them and for a heartbeat the room went still His eyes darkened a little something fierce and fragile in them “Don’t say that unless you mean it” “I’ve never meant anything more” I said and I could see the way his jaw tightened the way his heart tried to fight the truth He cupped my face again and kissed me harder this time with all the things he couldn’t say all the reasons he wanted to leave and all the reasons he couldn’t The coffee went cold forgotten between us but I didn’t care Nothing else mattered except the sound of his breath against my skin the way his lips whispered my name like a prayer he’d waited too long to say “Say it again” I whispered between kisses He smiled against my mouth “What” “My name” He leaned closer his breath warm on my lips “Vera” he murmured my name like it was something sacred something he was afraid to lose “Vera” again softer this time and it felt like the world had stopped moving just for us I closed my eyes breathing him in “Don’t stop” “Never” he said But there was a shadow behind his words one that lingered long after the kiss ended a reminder that love like ours didn’t come without a cost Later we sat on the couch his arm draped over my shoulder the air thick with unspoken promises Outside the rain started again gentle this time like the world was trying to lull us into believing we were safe “Whatever happens” he said quietly “remember this moment” “I will” I promised Because deep down I knew moments like this were all we had stolen pieces of forever in a world that wasn’t ready to let us stay I rested my head against his chest listening to the steady rhythm of his heart and thought maybe love didn’t need forever to be real maybe it only needed now The rhythm of his heartbeat lulled me into a peace I hadn’t felt in years the kind that makes the world disappear We stayed there long after the rain stopped the hum of the city below blending into something soft and distant The room smelled like coffee and warmth and him I tilted my face toward him his eyes half-closed his expression calm in a way that made my chest ache “Do you ever get tired of being strong” I asked quietly He smiled faintly “More than you know But I can’t stop not yet” “You could if you let someone in” I murmured tracing lazy circles on his chest “You could if you let me” His hand caught mine holding it still “You make it sound so simple” he whispered “Maybe it is We’re the ones who make it hard because we’re scared” He was silent for a long moment before saying softly “You make me want things I swore I could never have” “Then maybe it’s time to stop fighting them” I whispered “Maybe it’s time to just feel” He leaned down pressing a soft kiss to my forehead “You don’t know what you do to me” “I think I do” I smiled “You look at me like I’m the only thing keeping you together” “Maybe you are” he said quietly The honesty in his voice made my heart tighten I wanted to tell him that he wasn’t alone that I’d stay through whatever storm was coming but before I could he turned away walking toward the window again bathed in gold morning light “What are you thinking about” I asked He didn’t face me “You” I laughed softly “That’s not an answer” “It’s the only one I’ve got You’re the reason I’m still here” The words hit me like a soft blow to the chest I walked to him wrapping my arms around his waist resting my cheek on his back “Then don’t stop choosing me” He covered my hands with his “I’m not running anymore” I believed him The air shifted charged with unspoken promise He turned back to me fingers tracing my jaw “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted this” “Then stop thinking" I whispered “and feel” He kissed me deep slow every breath saying what words couldn’t Outside the clouds broke spilling morning light across us but in his arms the world was still quiet endless and safe His hand slid up my spine drawing me closer until our hearts beat in sync every breath tangled every touch a confession neither of us could hide The world outside could wait because in that moment nothing existed but him me and the promise of forever Lost in love too deep to escape
