Chapter 21 – The Alpha’s Doubt

393 Words
The night was heavy with silence, broken only by the rustle of leaves in the cold breeze. Selene sat by the edge of the training grounds, her eyes fixed on the moon above. Its pale light washed over her, softening the storm that had been brewing in her heart. She could still hear Alpha Damien’s words echoing inside her — harsh, final, like a blade cutting through her chest. “I don’t want you as my mate.” Yet, in the days that followed, his actions betrayed his words. He watched her when he thought no one noticed. His jaw tightened when another wolf spoke too close to her. And his aura — his Alpha’s power — reacted every time she was near, as though it knew something his heart was trying to deny. Selene hugged her knees, whispering to herself, “I don’t need him. I will never need him.” But even as she spoke, her wolf stirred uneasily. The bond was there. Unbreakable. And deep down, she knew it. Suddenly, a shadow fell across her. Selene lifted her head — and there he was. Alpha Damien. His silver eyes caught the moonlight, unreadable but sharp, as though they could pierce right into her soul. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said, his voice low, carrying both warning and… something else. Something softer. Selene stood quickly, refusing to show weakness. “I don’t need your concern, Alpha.” For a moment, neither of them moved. The bond between them pulled tight, like an invisible thread. Damien’s hand twitched at his side as if he wanted to reach for her, but pride — or fear — held him back. Finally, he spoke, his tone almost breaking, “Why… why does it hurt me when I see you cry?” Selene’s breath caught. She hadn’t expected him to admit that. Her heart raced, but her mind screamed at her to stay strong. “Maybe,” she said sharply, “because deep down, you know rejecting me was the biggest mistake of your life.” And with that, she turned her back on him, walking away before he could see the tears burning in her eyes. Damien clenched his fists, his chest tight with something he couldn’t name. For the first time since rejecting her, doubt sank its claws into him.
