Chapter 22 – The Moon’s Warning

457 Words
Selene walked quickly through the darkened path, her hands trembling though she forced herself to keep her chin high. She hated how much Alpha Damien’s words affected her, hated that even his smallest admission could stir her heart. No. He doesn’t deserve me. He made his choice. But as she crossed into the forest, a sudden chill swept over her. The night grew darker, the silence heavier. Her wolf stirred, ears pricked, sensing something wrong. Selene froze. The air smelled different — sharp, bitter, like iron and smoke. “Show yourself,” she demanded, her voice steady though her heart pounded. From the shadows, a pair of glowing red eyes emerged. A rogue wolf stepped into the moonlight, lips curled back in a snarl. His fur was matted, his body scarred, but his hunger was undeniable. And behind him… more shadows moved. Selene’s pulse raced. Rogues. Dozens of them. She shifted into her wolf form, white fur glowing faintly under the moonlight. Her wolf stood tall, ready to fight, but she knew she couldn’t take this many alone. Still, running would mean leading them back to the pack — and she refused to put innocent lives in danger. The rogues circled her, low growls echoing through the trees. Then, the ground shook. A powerful aura slammed through the clearing like a storm. The rogues faltered, ears flattening. Alpha Damien. He emerged from the darkness, his presence blazing, his silver wolf’s eyes burning like fire. His growl shook the night, filled with Alpha command. “Touch her,” he snarled, his voice layered with power, “and you’ll wish you were never born.” The rogues hesitated, but hunger and madness pushed them forward. They lunged. And in that instant, Selene and Damien fought side by side. Their wolves moved in perfect sync — claws tearing, teeth snapping, every strike fueled by rage and something deeper. Something undeniable. When the last rogue fell, silence returned. Selene stood panting, blood on her fur, her body trembling. Damien shifted back first, his chest rising and falling, eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her heart ache. “You’re mine,” he whispered hoarsely, as though the battle had ripped away all his defenses. “No matter how much I fight it, no matter what I say… you’re mine.” Selene’s wolf whimpered, her heart thundering, but her human side screamed against it. She shifted back, meeting his eyes with fire. “No, Alpha,” she spat, voice breaking. “You rejected me. You don’t get to claim me now.” And before he could answer, she turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving Damien standing in the ruins of the battle, his heart caught between pride and regret.
