Chapter Eighteen: The Fire Within

445 Words
The forest was silent when I slipped away at dawn, leaving Kael still healing in the den. Guilt gnawed at me for leaving his side, but I knew if I stayed, I’d only break more watching him suffer wounds meant for me. I needed to change that. I needed to fight back. At the edge of the clearing, an old figure awaited me—Lyanna, the pack’s elder and keeper of forgotten lore. Her silver hair shimmered like moonlight, her sharp eyes cutting into me as if she could see every doubt I carried. “You’re late,” she said simply. “I almost didn’t come,” I admitted, my voice raw. “But I can’t keep hiding. Teach me how to control this fire… before it controls me.” Lyanna’s lips curved in the faintest smile. “Good. The first step is admitting you are afraid. The second is learning to burn anyway.” She led me deeper into the woods, where ancient stones stood in a circle, their surfaces etched with runes older than the pack itself. The air thrummed with energy, awakening something inside me. “Sit,” Lyanna commanded. I obeyed, folding my legs beneath me. “Your fire is not a curse, Aria. It is a gift the moon itself placed within you. But gifts become burdens if you don’t understand them. Close your eyes.” I did. Darkness met me—then heat. A roaring inferno, wild and consuming, filling my veins. It scared me, how easy it would be to lose myself to it. “Breathe,” Lyanna’s voice guided me. “Do not fight the flame. Shape it.” I reached into the fire, and for a heartbeat, I thought it would devour me whole. But then—I pushed back, not with fear, but with will. Slowly, the blaze bent, twisting into a silver-white orb of light in my hands. When I opened my eyes, it was real. My fire hovered above my palms, controlled, beautiful. Lyanna’s eyes gleamed with pride. “Good. But control is only the beginning. You must learn to wield it… without destroying yourself in the process.” The orb flickered, heat licking at my skin. Sweat dripped down my temples, but I held on until it finally dissolved into sparks. My chest heaved with the effort, but for the first time, I felt hope. If I could master this power, maybe—just maybe—I could end Damien’s darkness. But even as I stood, determination filling me, the bond between us pulsed sharply, as if Damien could feel me growing stronger. Somewhere in the shadows, I knew he was smiling.
