Zara's mind still reeled from Alex's shocking proposal two nights ago. She couldn't fathom why he'd want to marry her, considering his playboy reputation and their friendship. She did always have feelings for Alex, but she had been able to sweep it under the rug.
The memories of their first meeting years ago flooded her thoughts.
Flashback: High School
Zara, a shy scholarship student, joined Alex's elite high school. Her classmates snubbed her, and whispers followed her everywhere.
"I heard she's here on scholarship," one student sneered.
"Must be some charity case," another chimed in.
Zara tried to ignore them, focusing on her studies. But the isolation stung.
One day, while studying in the library, Alex approached her.
"Hey, I'm Alex," he said with a warm smile. "Welcome to our school."
Zara's heart skipped a beat. The most popular boy in school was talking to her?
"Thanks," she replied, trying to sound calm.
As they talked, Zara discovered Alex's kind and humble side. They bonded over shared interests, and their friendship grew.
Soon, classmates clamored for her attention, seeking proximity to Alex. Girls envied her newfound status.
She remembered how Alex would sit with her at lunch, making her feel included. He'd help her with homework, and they'd study together for exams.
Zara's feelings for Alex blossomed into a deep crush. But she knew he didn't see her that way. So she had cherished their friendship and had been his only female friend he had let close to him since then.
Present Day
Zara's phone buzzed, snapping her back to reality. Alex's name flashed on the screen – again.
"Hey, beautiful," his text read. "Just wanted to check in."
She sighed, unsure how to respond. This was all still very strange to her. Alex had never shown romantic interest in her before now, so what could be prompting this? Two nights ago, he'd proposed out of the blue. Since then, he'd flooded her with calls and flowers.
Her office receptionist had already delivered two bouquets from Alex that morning.
"Zara, you're the most amazing woman I've ever met," one card read. "Can't wait to make you mine."
She felt suffocated by his sudden intensity.
Zara's thoughts swirled as she tried to focus on work. Her editor assigned her a pressing story, but Alex's words lingered in her mind.
"Why me?" she wondered. "What changed?"
As she delved into her story research, Alex's calls persisted.
"Hey, can we grab lunch?" he asked, his voice husky.
Zara hesitated, unsure how to navigate these unfamiliar feelings.
"Alex, I need space," she replied, trying to sound firm.
"Space?" he echoed. "Zara, I'm serious about us. I want to make this work."
His sincerity unsettled her. Was this the same Alex she'd known for years?
"I need time to think," she said finally.
"Okay, but know this – I'm not giving up," Alex promised.
As Zara hung up, her heart pounded. She couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever.
She walked to the office window, gazing out at the city. The proposal had stirred up emotions she thought she'd long buried.
Zara's phone buzzed again. Another text from Alex.
"I mean it, Zara. I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
Her face creased with worry and apprehension. Why now? Why her?
She needed answers, but Alex's words only left her with more questions.

Zara sat at her desk, staring out the window as she dialed her sister's number.
"Hey, sis!" Zoe answered on the first ring.
"Hey, Zoe," Zara replied, her voice laced with uncertainty.
"What's wrong?" Zoe asked, sensing her sister's unease.
"It's Alex," Zara began. "He proposed to me."
There was a pause at the other end.
"Alex Steele? Your Alex?" Zoe clarified.
"The one and only," Zara confirmed.
"Zara, be careful," Zoe cautioned. "You've known him for years, and he's never shown interest in you romantically. What makes you think this is genuine?"
Zara sighed. "I don't know, Zoe. He seems sincere, but I'm confused."
"Of course, you are," Zoe said softly. "You've had feelings for him for years, but you've successfully kept them hidden, even from yourself."
Zara's silence confirmed Zoe's statement.
"Sis, I'm not saying it's impossible, but consider his reputation," Zoe continued. "Can you really trust him?"
"I don't know," Zara admitted. "That's why I called you. I'm lost."
"Zara, listen," Zoe said firmly. "I want the best for you, and I love you so much. But please, be cautious. Make sure Alex's intentions are genuine."
"I will," Zara promised.
"And remember, your happiness matters most," Zoe added.
"Thanks, Zoe," Zara said, feeling a bit clearer.
"I'm always here for you," Zoe replied. "Keep me posted."
As they hung up, Zara couldn't shake off Zoe's words.
Was Alex genuinely interested in her?
Only time will tell.

Alex arrives at Zara's house, looking dashing in his casual attire. Zara opened the door, her hair tied up in a ponytail.
"Hey," Alex said, flashing his charming smile.
"Hey," Zara replied, stepping aside to let him in.
They settled in the living room, and Alex got straight to the point.
"I have a tech conference in Rio de Janeiro in two days," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "I'd love for you to join me."
Zara raised an eyebrow. "Rio? That's sudden."
"Three days of conference, and then we'll have four days to ourselves," Alex tempted. "You've always wanted to visit Brazil, haven't you?"
Zara's expression softened. Her father had told her and her sister stories his own mother had told him of her country, Brazil, before she moved to Spain and it had always sparked her curiosity.
"Come on, Zara, don't overthink it," Alex coaxed. "We can go as friends. You deserve a break."
Zara hesitated, her mind racing. "I don't know, Alex. I have work."
"Make an excuse," Alex suggested, his voice low and persuasive. "You shouldn't miss this opportunity."
Zara's resolve weakened. Alex's proximity stirred feelings she thought she'd long buried.
"Alright, Alex, I'll think about it," she conceded.
Alex's face lit up. "That's all I can ask for. I'll be leaving the day after tomorrow. Let me know soon so I can make the flight arrangements.”
As Alex stood to leave, his gaze lingered on Zara's face. For a moment, they locked eyes, the air thick with unspoken tension.
Zara felt her pulse quicken. Was she reading too much into this?
Alex's voice broke the spell. "I really hope you'll come, Zara. It wouldn't be the same without you."
As he departed, Zara couldn't shake off the feeling that this trip could change everything.
Alex departed, his mind replaying their interaction. Zara's casual elegance had caught him off guard. For a moment there, seeing her looking homely and relaxed, he felt a spark he couldn't ignore. Seizing the opportunity, he vowed to make the trip a memorable one.
