VANESSA
My head was swimming with the smell of him.
It was seductive, dizzying, all consuming and | wanted more.
‘Yes' Alicia agreed and I couldn't help finding his face again.
"You snuck out." He addressed Scarlett but his gaze stayed locked on mine.
A shiver walked down my spine that had nothing to do with the cold.
"I didn't" She denied. "I was looking for my dearest big brother and happened to make it outside." Scarlett gave him a cheeky grin.
With a roll of his eyes he looked at the princess and I felt like I could breathe again.
"Scarlett. " His voice was a soft growl of exasperation. "You have 10 seconds or we do this my way."
She held up her hands in defeat. "Okay okay. I'll go to my room but-"
Before she could finish her excuses he bent down and scooped his arm under her legs.
His voice allowed no arguments as he demanded I follow them to her chambers.
We arrived at a large double door with two warriors on either side. They pushed the door open as we approached and I felt wonder expand in my chest once more.
"Bring her tea." The prince said to the guards as we stepped into the room.
The pink themed chamber was like something out of my 15 year old self's dream.
The room was larger than my living room and bedroom combined and decorated tastefully in pale pink, and cream with accents of gold. A large crystal chandelier hung from the middle of the ceiling. And underneath the chandelier was a large bed overrun with blankets, pillows, and a giant stuffed bear.
As much as I wanted to drink in the rest of the room, I couldn't keep my eyes from flitting back to the dark haired man. An earthquake could shake the house and I would have kept my eyes glued to him.
He couldn't be much older than I was.
His body was the product of hard work. Broad shoulders led to muscular arms that could swallow me with one curl. His dress shoes clicked on the marble floor as we passed the sitting area of cream and gold couches.
I took in the muscle cording through his broad back as he removed the layers of blankets on Scarlett's four poster bed then laid her gently underneath.
He turned to face me then and I lowered my gaze to his chin.
Was he angry at all my staring?
The smell of him surrounded me and I wondered if he could feel the pull between us. I wondered if it was affecting him like it was me.
My heart thudded furiously as he took a few steps closer to me.
"Who are you?" His dark voice caressed my ears and I bowed my head to hide the blush spreading over my cheeks.
"Vanessa, your highness. New personal maid to the princess."
I felt his eyes roaming over me but surprisingly, did not feel afraid. The attention of the prince instead, made me feel safe. He said nothing as he stared and I wondered if this was some type of fate.
All my thoughts went out of my head as the prince's fingers caressed the side of my face. I jerked back at the electric shock that sparked from where he touched, staring at him with wide eyes.
His eyes were unreadable as they bore into mine.
The connection was undeniable. I had been blessed twice.
Alicia yipped happily at the revelation. I hadn't felt such excitement from her this entire year, but I didn't know how to feel.
I was grateful but confused, my mind working a mile a minute. If this were true, what about Jamal? I couldn't think of him as just a placeholder to keep me going until I made it here. There had to be more to it than that.
Maybe he saw the uncertainty in my eyes because without a word the prince broke the connection and left.
My eyes widened as I stared at the closed door, soaking in the implications of what just happened.
The princess laid in her bed staring with her eyebrows drawn close together.
The honeyed scent left, bringing a sense of clarity. I shook myself slightly to clear the lingering fog and approached Scarlett.
"Is there anything I can do for you, your highness?" I asked her.
She shook her head slowly, confusion still on her face.
I felt the same but fluffed her pillows to make her more comfortable. I had to make sure I did well. A slight breeze raced through the room and, noticing the princess's shiver, went to close the window. I'd only just finished when the princess let out a body racking cough. I hurried to her side.
"Are you alright?" My eyes darted over her face searching. It was flushed red and she couldn't seem to catch her breath between the dry coughs.
I bit my lip as I fretted around her.
I didn't know what to do. I hadn't even had orientation much less a run down on the princess's condition.
"Move!"His dark voice commanded.
The prince had returned with tea for the princess but he put it to the side as he forced her into a straight position.
"Scarlet, come on. In. Out." He said harshly, mimicking the breathing he wanted her to do. I watched helplessly as he walked her through, forcing her to regulate her breaths.
I bit my lip as I waited for her to be okay again. When she could finally drink the tea, I spoke.
"Princess Scarlet, please, what is your condition? How can I help you next time?" I asked.
The prince turned to me before she could speak. "There is no next time." His voice was cold.
My heart skipped at the tone so opposite from his scent. I looked away and bit my lip. I was certain of the attraction between us but his voice said he didn't feel the same.
"Brother Mallo, please." Scarlett begged with her raspy voice.
He ignored her and sucked in a deep breath. "She smells like an omega." His voice was a rough rumble as his dark eyes stayed on mine.
Scarlett tried to protest on my behalf. "Yes but she-"
"A mere omega attending the princess?" He didn't let her speak either, "I won't allow it."
I couldn't help the trembles that ran through my body at the power in his voice. It was alluring that he had the strength to protect us. Scarlet let out a loud huff.
"She's not your assistant, you have no say." She fought back.
Again, The prince stared at me while addressing Scarlett. His eyes were a dark brown, like my own but while mine held warmth, his were cold burnished bronze.
"I have the only say." He rebuked.
The princess wouldn't take no for an answer. Despite just being sick she threw off her blankets and got out of bed.
"You're not king yet, dear brother. Meetings of fate can't be ignored." She huffed and stormed out.
Prince Mallo looked at her fleetingly but didn't stop her as she left, leaving the two of us alone in her room.
I stood frozen as he stalked closer to me.
