JACK MILLER
~~
I loved this…
I loved the way my words took my dad’s breath away, leaving him in shock.
Although I also hated how he was fawning over Kiara like she was such a big deal, I still enjoyed the look of dismay on his face and how his mood immediately affected his plaything mood as well.
My smirk didn't flatter as I muttered, “Coach told me about your attempt to ruin my chances on the field, Dad. At first, I didn't believe you would try to sabotage my passion just because you wanted me to be a stuck-up scientist like you.”
“Jack, you have to listen to me.” My Dad stuttered, falling out of character, but I knew that was another means of tricking me. Just like he tricked me into accepting that dumb course in school. “Stay away from the man you call Coach and stay in school. Your future is on the line—”
“You screwed up my future when you killed my mom and my little sister, Steve Miller. There is no future for me anymore.” Not even on the field…
But I didn't say that to anyone. I kept that within me and pointed fingers at the only person I could accuse without feeling guilty.
“Now if you will excuse me,” I mumbled, almost losing my control.
I turned away from everyone and headed for the front door even though my dad kept calling for me. I needed an excuse to get out of the house because I would be lying if I said I wasn't breaking internally at the moment.
I was hungover, broken, and full of hatred. It's an out I didn't get to burn the world down with the bîtch I met earlier today in the club.
Most of my memories of the night were still vague, but I could recall that she was beautiful. One thing I didn't recall was leaving my bike back at the club….
I soon realized it when I reached the parking lot and didn't find my bike there.
“He left my bike there but brought me home?” I scoffed.
I was certain he, my dad, didn't leave my bike back at the club. He wouldn't do that. He most likely hid the bike somewhere to restrict my movement.
But I would be dàmned to let him have his way again. I was done with his tricks, lies, and manipulations.
Rather than go back into the house to demand for the whereabouts of my bike and appear like a boneless puppy, I chose to approach my dad’s section of the parking lot where Mr. Pete, my dad’s favorite chauffeur, was checking my dad’s BMW.
“Hello, Mr. Pete.” I greeted him with a wide smile.
Unlike Edna, Pete was easy to deceive. All I needed was a smile.
“Mr. Jack! Look at you,” Pete responded excitedly. He was probably in his mid-forties, but he was a happy man.
It pained me to trick him this way, but I wanted to escape the hell my home had become.
“Edna asked me to let you know she has something for you in the kitchen. She is also waiting for you-”
“Really? Sounds like I will be having a good meal today. Thanks, Jack.” Pete said to me and rushed to the mansion in excitement.
Pete didn't only leave the car doors open, but he also left the key on the seat. I grabbed it, locked the doors, and settled behind the wheels before zooming off the driveway and away from home with one place in mind.
Within twenty minutes, I arrived at my destination, parked the car, and alighted. The rich scenery of my neighborhood had changed into a more natural one, and I enjoyed the view as I bounced on the lawn, moving towards the familiar door of my buddy’s, Adrian, apartment.
There were many parents in this area of town and Adrian rented a small one years ago. He had been my buddy since the first day of high school, and he was also my teammate… my former teammate to be precise.
I knocked on the wooden door twice before pushing the door open as I usually do.
“How many times do I have to tell you to wait till I let you in before you barge in like you won the place, J!” Adrian barked at me the minute he saw me.
J…
That was also my field name—- the name my fans and football buddies call me.
Emma and Mom were my biggest fans. In fact, my sister came up with the nickname, and she was the president of my small fan group until she was taken away from me by our selfish monster of a father—
“Jackson Miller! You heard me, yeah?” Adrian yelled, jerking off his small couch to tackle me.
But I was quick to dodge him, jumping on his bed to avoid him. The space in his apartment was small. All he had was a tiny sitting room, a small bedroom, and a kitchen. Truth was, he demarcated the place and made three spaces out of a small room.
My bathroom was bigger than the entire place, but this place wasn't hell like my home.
“Keep it down before your neighbors kick us both out, man!” I hissed, laughing afterward as I stared at my friend.
Yes, Adrian was more than a teammate. He was my man.
“You are crazy, J. You are clearly hungover.”
“Well, you know me too well.” I shrugged, relaxing on Adrian’s bed… in his plain, simple room.
This place was more homely than my home.
Adrian returned to his couch, flopping on it before asking me, “Where did you drop your cell phone? I have been trying to reach you since yesterday.”
With my eyes fixed on his white ceiling, I answered, “I can't recall, to be honest. Why were you trying to reach me? I didn't think you would miss me.”
“Don't flatter yourself, douche.” Adrian retired and we both laughed.
But it was a short one. I knew he was probably calling me because he knew it was Emma’s birthday. Everyone would have remembered… Everyone except my dad, clearly.
I held my breath, waiting for Adrian to confirm my suspicion, but he said instead, “I had news to share with you.”
“Although my head is banging, I am all ears, Adri,” I mumbled, closing my eyes.
“Coach set up an impromptu game yesterday, which was why I didn't call you earlier. During the game, some scouts arrived and I and a few others were picked.” Adrian’s voice hit my eardrums, causing my eyes to open at the speed of light.
“What?” I exclaimed, jolting into a sitting position so I could see his face.
Adrian chuckled, “Also among those that were picked and offered admission into New Crest Sports College, I was the only one that was offered a full-time scholarship not to forget full-time accommodation, J—”
I could no longer contain my excitement. I jumped off Adrian’s bed, screaming as I jumped around his room, happy that he made it into the most sought-after sports college in this part of the world.
“This is huge, Adri! Congratulations!” I stretched my hand to shake my friend, but I soon realized that Adri wasn't as excited as I was, which deflated my energy. “Is there a problem? You don't look happy.”
“It's hard to be happy when I know this was your dream… heck, this is your dream, J. You deserve to be going to that school with me, but look around, man, I am the only one packing to move into a dormitory that you have always dreamed of. You inspired me to dream, J. It's not fair that you aren't going with me even though you are still fully capable. It's not like you have an injury that is stopping you from—@
“Hey, Hey….” I breathed to calm my emotional friend. “Relax man.”
“I just hate this, J. Why can't you pursue your dreams and become the best footballer in the world? Why is Steve suddenly against your dreams?” Adrian blurted angrily.
He knew everything that was going on in the mansion. He was fully aware of my battles, which justified his anger.
“Look at me, Adri,” I said to him. “You deserve this just as much as I do, and I will join you as soon as I find a way to change coach's mind and convince him to take me back. I just need to be focused and earn a lot of money. So don't worry about me, Adri. Let's celebrate your win because it's our win.”
Adrian’s face lit up as my words hit home. “Promise me you won't give up on your dreams. You have to do everything to join me in that school, J.”
“I promise,” I answered, even though I knew it would be hard to go against my dad’s wish.
Not only do I not have money to fight against my rich dad, but I also don't have the needed connection. No one would go against my dad, not even my coach. Apparently.
“I promise you, Adri. Let's go celebrate, okay?” I repeated.
Within a twinkle of an eye, Adrian and I had changed into our jerseys and hoses. I was thankful I had extra clothes in my apartment. Together, we jogged off towards a field we usually use for practice whenever I came to his neighborhood.
The field was the best place to celebrate Adrian’s admission and as we dribbled and passed the ball under the cool weather of the morning, I forgot all my worries…
All of them except the thick curvy body that remained etched on my mind like a parasite…
A pleasurable parasite.
