KIARA FALLS
~~
The time was 7:02 am when I checked my wristwatch after shutting my front door behind me, resting against it for a minute as I sighed.
It had been a long day even though it was still early.
Moreover, I still had a long day ahead of me.
I pushed myself away from the door as my mom’s voice echoed through my mind, reminding me of the unresolved issue I had with her and her new family.
Well, I have to admit, Steve was a cunning man who would do anything to get what he wanted and, at the moment, he wanted me to move in. The offer was mouth-watering and I would definitely think about it, but for now, I have to keep my mind on more pending issues like the fact that I have to be at work in two hours and also Dave.
I have to see my man today and figure out what the hell was happening to us.
Quickly, I entered my bathroom and immediately felt the difference compared to the bathroom I used back at the mansion... In Emma’s room.
Obviously, mine was crappy and small.
“I live a shîtty life here,” I mumbled to myself before proceeding to take my bath.
I was this close to asking myself questions about the Miller family and its missing members when the sound of my cell phone ringtone saved me. I mean, shouldn't I drop whatever happened in that house there within its walls?
Sighing, I exited the bathroom and trapped my cell phone from my bed. A smile stretched my face when I saw the display name and excitement bubbled within me just as I answered the call and heard my female best friend’s voice— I have a male best friend as well, even though Dave hated him.
“My darling Ara!” Cherry’s bubbling voice made me giggle as she called me the same nickname she had coined out of my name.
Unlike everyone else, Cherry chose to use the last three letters of my name instead of the first three letters.
“My sweet Cherry,” I responded with the same energy, throwing myself on my bed like I had all the time in the world to myself.
Cherry snorted, “You can't call me yours when you didn't even think about calling me since you started your new job, Professor Ara.”
“It's Professor Falls, but that sounds better.” I snickered.
I imagined Cherry rolling her eyes as she said, “Of course, it does.”
Clearly, Cherry called me to ask about my first day at work, but I didn't know what to tell her. Should I tell her about my sweet female students or about the one male student who stood out to me and happened to be my soon-to-be stepbrother?
Silence stretched between Cherry and me and I lay on my bed, semi-clad with my loose towel.
“Do I have to teleport myself into your mind? Your silence is strange and suspicious.” Cherry’s voice echoed. “Did you already break a rule at work? Is there a stick in your supervisor’s ass? I can get it out without batting my eyelashes—”
“I know you can do that.” I laughed, escaping my thoughts again. “What about we meet up for lunch? I have so much to tell you and I need your advice. You have to—”
“The ever-sensitive Kiara Falls needs the advice of the always crazy Cherry Wallen? That's new and I am so in! I can smell trouble and I love trouble!” Cherry squealed on the other side.
I rolled my eyes, knowing that she was most likely jumping around in her room and bouncing her perfect blond hair.
“You are so extra,” I muttered.
“You love me still, Ara.” Cherry coed.
“Of course. No one wants to roll with the nerd Kiara Falls except you and Joel. I have no choice but to love you both.”
“Did you have to remind me of the fact that I have to share you with that weirdo? Just don't bring him to lunch or I will really end our friendship this time!” Cherry flared jokingly.
She loved Joel and even though she tried to hide it, I knew she had a thing for Joel.
“I will talk to you later, Cherry. Please don't go around looking for trouble today.” I said to her and hung up before she could lash out at me.
While I was a thick; some will say fat, but thick will do; a nerdy female, Cherry, was a Barbie doll, yet she chose to be my friend. Cherry and I were opposites in many ramifications. She was from a rich complete family, while I was, you know, Kiara Falls.
Without further ado, I left my bed and dressed myself in a silky brown skirt coupled with a white shirt to complete the look. My bag was black today and so was the wedge pair of shoes I chose to wear.
I left my apartment with a simple plan - drive to Dave’s place without calling him, hope to see him at home, question him, get answers, and go to work, even if I have to go as a broken young woman whose heart has been shattered.
Hopefully, that won't happen.
I didn't know what to expect as I drove to Dave’s apartment, but still, I didn't change my mind. He was my lover and I needed him to talk to me.
Soon, I arrived in front of his house and killed my car engine. I entered the apartment building and took the stairs to the second floor where Dave’s apartment was. Gently, I knocked on his door, holding my breath in anticipation.
I knocked again and again but got no response.
A few of his neighbors passed by me, looking at me as I knocked, and I wished the floor would open up and swallow me as embarrassment flooded my system.
Just as I gave up and turned around to leave, I heard the door locks clicking before it was pulled open, revealing Dave’s sleepy face.
“Kiara?” Dave called like he was shocked to see me.
He should be…
I held back my tongue and the stupid tears that had clouded my eyes as I pushed past him to enter his apartment. I didn't miss the smell of alcohol that rolled off him, but I didn't comment.
“Come in,” Dave said after I stepped into his living room.
I waited till he closed the door behind him before asking, “What has gotten into you, Dave? You are tipsy or hungover on a weekday? What's going on with you?”
For a split minute, my boyfriend's face reminded me of Jackàss’s…. Jack was also hungover when he left the mansion earlier… in a car that pissed Steve off, if I may add.
“Did you come here to yell at me?” Dave grumbled, stumbling as he walked to his kitchen to get water.
I followed him, controlling my anger and tone, “I didn't, Dave. I came here because I was worried about you, and you weren't answering my calls or responding to my texts, baby. I was here last week, but you weren't home. Talk to me, Dave.”
He turned to face me, his naked upper body enticing me as he spoke, “It's been a rough couple of days, Kiara. I misplaced my cell phone and I have been going from one—”
“You lost your phone? How could you not reach out to let me know?” I cut in.
“How do I let you know without my cellphone?” Dave argued confidently.
“Your laptop, Dave. You still have that, right? You could have emailed me or FaceTime with me. We could have found a way to get you a new phone instead of making me worry.”
“I told you that I have been busy, Kiara! I have been going from one interview to another just to get a job and avoid situations where you throw your money in my face like you are doing right now!” Dave barked at me, causing me to stumble backward and away from him.
I stuttered, “What do you mean? I don't even have the money to throw in your face—”
“But you have a great job, and you are already thinking about getting me another cell phone like I am some loser. I don't want to be a loser to you. I want to be able to take care of you and make you my woman.” Dave exclaimed, lamenting to me.
I watched him break before me, crumbling to the floor of his kitchen as he continued, “You have a job and I don't, Kiara. I should be able to care for you, but you are suddenly way out of my league, and I am doing all I can to level up. I don't want to be a liability—”
“You aren't a loser nor are you a liability, baby,” I interjected, understanding how he felt. He was feeling less of his amazing self, so I had to remind him. “You are my smart man, Dave, and I love you so much. No one comes close to you and—-”
Although I said that, my feelings wavered. I wondered why he was feeling threatened by my success. Was that right?
Before I could think more, Dave grabbed my neck, pulled me closer to him, and kissed me deeply. His familiar lips molded against mine and his tongue collided with mine as well…
It was relieving, yet I couldn't help but compare Dave’s lips to those of the douchè that kissed me earlier this morning…
What is happening to me?…
