PROLOGUE

Chase POV I was set for the day having prepared for the important meeting I had with the investors. I could hear her shrieking from the monitor and I knew she was awake. Fastening my tie I settled knowing that she would be attended to by Nicole. This meeting was very important to the company. It would determine our break this season and I couldn't waste that opportunity. Walking into the bedroom I could still hear her cries and Nicole was still lying in bed unfazed. "Looks like she's up and needs her mommy," I said as I bent down to kiss her cheek. "Maria will attend to her like she always does." She sighed as she was tossing in our bed. "Baby she needs you, I heard that a mother's touch is comforting to a baby," I said reassuringly standing next to the bed. Her cries were getting worse and so was Nicole's attitude. Since the birth of Mia, she has been distant and on edge. The tiniest things upset her making everybody around her walk on eggshells including me. "Chase, please not today. I am not in the mood if it bothers you that much why don't you go pick her?" She replied turning to stare coldly into my eyes. "Baby you know I am running late and I have to be on time to meet the investors." I insisted walking up to the dresser to pick up my briefcase. "I can't do this Chase, did you for one second think that the baby was our responsibility, not mine alone?" She asked while typing away on her phone. "I spend quality time with my daughter all the time, are you saying that I am a bad father?" I asked her quizzically wondering what got into her. I knew that having a child before we wed was not on our bingo cards but we did and I was happy. Mia was a symbol of the love we shared. So what is really up with her this day? "We haven't talked about my debut and when I'll have to get back to creating more designs for my line. You know that every second I spend in this house I would have been making at least two designs." She said her eyes blazing into mine. "But you only had the baby three months ago. I think it's needed for you and the baby to have your well-deserved rest or you could bring your work at home. We can set up your office." I tried reasoning with her. "That wouldn't fulfill me. I want to be out with friends and attend the latest events. It seems that you don't care about what I want. It's always your work that comes first!" She snapped raising her voice. "I don't have time for this. We will talk about it when I get home. You know that your dreams are important to me too." My voice came out much calmer than I felt. She always does this and I was not trying to get into a screaming match with her. I picked up my briefcase from the dresser and kissed her forehead goodbye hoping to resolve the issue when I got back. Walking down the hallway I could hear Maria singing to Mia and I knew that she was in good hands. ........... The meeting was a success and much to my delight everyone was on board with our current plan. I planned on heading home as soon as it was done. I know that I have been pushing myself a little too hard these past few days and I owe it to Nicole to at least listen to her. "Yes, white roses and some of your best exotic chocolates," I said getting off the phone. I could not hold my excitement any longer. Now that the flowers were sorted out I was at ease. I knew that a thoughtful surprise would lift her spirits. I gave Maria a half-day off after I sent her to buy some groceries for the dinner I was to cook for Nicole. I wanted to make this day worthwhile, it was going to be all about her. I wanted to remind her of the other joys in her life and how much fun we used to have. Canceling all my meetings for the day I set out to pick up some of her favorite desserts and gifts. Once I ticked off everything on my list, I decided to call her just to make sure she had no other plans for the day. After several calls going to voicemail, I assumed maybe she took a nap. "The better" I whispered to myself. When I got home I quickly unloaded the bags from the backseat of my car. Walking up to the door I could hear the baby cooing and I smiled knowing they were both up from their nap. I opened the door slowly so as not to startle them or upset the child. I sauntered into the living room and I spotted her in the crib playing with one of the squeaky toys. Placing all the bags on the couch I walked over to her as I scanned the room. There was no presence of Nicole so I thought she was in the shower or upstairs in our bedroom. Carefully picking her up I couldn't help but adore her. Her tiny hands touched my face and I couldn't help but melt away. Her large grey eyes bored into mine while she smiled. I marveled at her beauty, she took her mother's eyes and dark hair which complemented her well. She was just the perfect baby. Placing her down I slowly walked into the kitchen to start up dinner in an attempt to surprise Nicola. The house was unusually quiet. "Nicola, Babe? I'm home" I called out. There was no response but my attention was redirected by a rustling sound up ahead. "Baby, are you okay?" I said walking over to where the noise came from. It was so unusual of her not to answer me. Panicking I opened the door quickly only to be met by an unimaginable sight.......
