"Are you here to insult me some more?" I asked sarcastically. I didn't have time for this.
"I need to talk to you, take a seat," he said, placing his phone on the table.
I didn't know what was more amusing - the fact that he could just walk into my workplace and give me orders, or the fact that he thought we could have a conversation after his behavior towards me.
"I'm at work, and it's against the rules to socialize with customers during work hours," I told him firmly.
I didn't want to get in trouble with my manager again. I needed this job, at least to survive, even though it didn't help much.
"Listen, if you knew who I am, you would take a seat and listen to what I have to say," he said in a bossy tone.
The audacity he had to think that he could boss me around was unbelievable. I was beyond angry at this point.
"I don't care and to be honest it doesn't matter to me who you are. You are a prick that gets off by disrespecting people and I had enough of it." I unknowingly raised my voice at him to his surprise.
Everyone around us stared wondering what was going on. From the corner of my eye, I could see the manager stomping toward me and I knew the jig was up. I was surely getting fired today.
"What's going on here?" He bellowed looking directly at me. If looks could kill I would be on the floor right now.
"Umm...sir he.."I tried speaking up but my words were cut off.
"She was just trying to convince me to try today's special," he said calmly looking at me. I caught on to what he was trying to do.
The manager turned to face him and gaped in awe. Stepping forward he stretched his hand out hurriedly to greet him.
"Sorry sir, I never knew it was you. I hope she isn't being a handful."He said rushing his words out. I wondered who he was to command such respect from the manager.
He must be someone very important to be treated with such respect. John was always an asshole to people beneath him. He would berate and even get physical with people who disagreed with him.
"Let me be at your service, Isabella go and call June. You can serve another table." He said with a disapproving look on his face.
The man looked at me with a sly grin on his face as if he had just won the lottery. It's like he gets a kick from my embarrassment.
"I wanted to speak to Isabella if you don't mind." He said in a calm tone. The surprise on John's face was evident.
John shifted his weight and faced me. He gave me a disapproving look and went on to say.
"Sure sir, whatever you need." He walked away slowly eyeing me.
He cleared his throat and got my attention. Slowly standing up he placed his hands in his pockets and spoke up
"I realized I never introduced myself. My name is Chase Sanders and I would like for you to be my daughter's nanny."
"You've got to be kidding me," I said with disbelief in my voice.
I couldn't decide if it was a sick joke or he was just mocking me, so I decided the latter.
"Thank you for the offer but I must decline, "I said mustering all the courage I had to look at him.
Although I was desperate my self-respect came first. It took every ounce of me not to yell at him as I walked away leaving him standing there.
I walked up to June who was happily whistling while she had her coffee. I could tell by the way Chase left that he was annoyed, Good
"You can't imagine who just came by," I said with disgust in my voice.
"Who?" June answered with a piqued interest.
"The jerk I interviewed for. Remember then nanny job?" I said raising my eyebrows.
"No!? What did he want?" She said placing her drink on the counter.
We proceeded to banter over the events of the past two days. The hours went on fast and it was past closing time. I was left on cleaning duty to make up for my time off when John called me to his office.
I wondered what he was doing in there this late. He usually was the first one to leave. So I was hesitant to follow him knowing that he would surely scold me for the mistakes I did today.
Getting to his office he stood at the door and ushered me in. I slowly sauntered into the office taking small steps. My mind was swimming with thoughts and I was confused.
"Take a seat." His voice bellowed in the room.
I cautiously took my seat and awaited my judgment. He walked to me and sat across me, looking at me as a predator would look its prey. I never liked him, he constantly reeked of nicotine and was obsessed with over-gelling his hair.
"What did you want to talk about?" I inquired in a small voice.
"Lately you seem to be lost at work and your clumsiness is getting out of hand." He said with a finality in his tone.
"I am sorry sir, I have been going through a lot and I know it's not an excuse. I'll do better and I was hoping to pick up more shifts..." I begged hoping I wasn't getting fired.
"How would you do that when you can barely handle the ones at present."He cut me off while leaning forward from his laid-back position.
"I know a way you could get more money but you know everything has a price right? " John said with a tone I could quite decipher and something else lust?
His statement sent chills through me and it hit me that we were the only people in the cafe. I jerked up frantically my body finally catching up to my mind.
I stood up meticulously backing away from him. He caught on quickly and took two strides stopping me in my tracks.
"Listen this is only between the both of us. I could give you money and more," he said leaning down to put his hands on my shoulders.
I could feel bile rising at the back of my throat from his preposition.
"Please just let me go. Thank you for the offer but I'm not interested." I said hoping he would understand.
"Who do you think you are? You think you are better than me huh?" He said in an extremely dark tone and I gulped hard.
This couldn't be happening to me. It's like a dark cloud of bad luck was following me around. He stepped closer closing the space between us and held my face in his hands.
I could puke just from the nicotine and sweat smell that was coming off of him. I froze in disbelief at his audacity. Yes, he was proud and bossy but I didn't peg him as a harmful person.
I had to think fast to save myself from this impending doom. I quickly kicked him in his region, a move that we were taught in middle school during self-defense classes. I never knew that one day it would come in handy.
He growled and pain releasing me from his grip. Without hesitation, I opened the door and ran out as fast as I could. Once I stepped outside I was met with Chase standing next to his car looking at his wristwatch.
