THE DEVIL HIMSELF

Chloe sat frozen against the leather seat, her entire body trembling from fear, cold, and confusion. Water dripped slowly from her soaked hair onto her shaking hands while her breathing remained uneven from running too much. Everything had happened too quickly for her mind to process properly. One moment she had been running for her life through empty streets, and the next moment she found herself inside the car of the most feared man in the city. Adrian Knight. Even hearing the name again made her chest tighten slightly. Chloe carefully turned her eyes toward him again, trying not to make it obvious she was staring. Up close, Adrian looked even more intimidating than the rumors described. His expensive black suit fit his broad body perfectly while his sharp jawline remained tense beneath the dim lights inside the car. There was something dangerously calm about him, something cold enough to make anyone nervous without him needing to say a single word. His grey eyes remained fixed ahead now, unreadable and distant, but Chloe could still feel the heaviness of his presence filling the entire car. The driver suddenly swerved sharply into another road, making Chloe gasp softly as the vehicle moved dangerously fast through the rain. She quickly grabbed the seat beside her to steady herself while panic slowly returned inside her chest. Outside the tinted windows, black cars were still chasing them through the stormy streets like predators refusing to lose their target. Chloe swallowed nervously before finally gathering enough courage to speak again. “Why are they chasing me?” she asked softly. Silence filled the car for a few seconds. Then Adrian finally responded without looking at her. “That’s what I intend to find out.” His deep voice sent strange chills through Chloe’s body. It wasn’t loud or emotional, but there was power hidden beneath every word he spoke. She frowned slightly, confused by his answer. If Adrian didn’t know why people were after her, then why did he help her so quickly? And why had he looked so shocked when he first saw her face? “You know me?” Chloe asked carefully. This time Adrian slowly turned his head toward her. Their eyes met fully again. And suddenly Chloe felt her heartbeat skip painfully. There was something terrifying hidden inside his gaze tonight. Not hatred. Not anger. Something much deeper. Something intense enough to make her nervous beneath his stare. Adrian studied her face silently like he was trying to convince himself she was real. Chloe shifted slightly under the pressure of his gaze, feeling strangely exposed. “You don’t remember me,” Adrian said quietly. It wasn’t a question. Chloe frowned harder. “Should I?” A dangerous silence followed her words. Adrian slowly leaned back against his seat again, but his expression darkened slightly afterward. Chloe noticed the way his jaw tightened like he was controlling emotions he didn’t want visible. The atmosphere inside the car suddenly became heavier than before. “No,” Adrian answered finally. “You shouldn’t.” Before Chloe could ask another question, the driver suddenly spoke again. “Boss, they’re getting closer.” Adrian’s eyes turned cold instantly. “Take the underground route.” “Yes, boss.” The car immediately turned sharply toward a hidden road beneath the city bridge while rain continued pouring violently outside. Chloe held her breath as the expensive vehicle accelerated deeper into the dark tunnel ahead. Her mind was spinning with too many unanswered questions now. Nothing about tonight felt normal anymore. Not the men chasing her. Not Adrian Knight rescuing her. And definitely not the strange familiarity she felt whenever he looked at her. Suddenly, Adrian reached toward her slowly. Chloe flinched immediately. But instead of hurting her, Adrian gently touched the cut on her forehead where blood still mixed with rainwater. His expression darkened slightly as he looked at the injury more carefully. “You’re hurt,” he said quietly. Chloe’s throat tightened unexpectedly. “No, it’s fine,” she replied quickly. Adrian ignored her answer completely. He removed a clean black handkerchief from his pocket before carefully pressing it against her forehead. Chloe froze instantly at the unexpected gentleness in his actions. A man like Adrian Knight did not look like someone capable of soft touches. Yet his movements around her felt strangely careful, almost protective. “Hold this there,” he instructed calmly. Chloe slowly obeyed without argument. The tension between them became heavier afterward. Adrian’s fingers brushed lightly against hers for only a second, but somehow it felt dangerous enough to make Chloe nervous again. She quickly looked away toward the rain outside the window, trying to calm her racing heartbeat. Why was this happening? Why did this dangerous man look at her like she belonged to him already? Meanwhile, Adrian sat silently beside her while darker thoughts filled his mind. He remembered every detail from the night he lost her years ago. The blood covering the mansion floors. The fire consuming everything. Her terrified screams echoing through the chaos while enemies destroyed everyone inside. Adrian had searched endlessly for her afterward, but all evidence pointed toward one truth. Chloe Bennett was dead. Or at least… She was supposed to be. Yet fate had returned her to him tonight in the middle of a storm. Alive. Breathing. Beautiful. Adrian slowly clenched his fist beside him as dangerous emotions rose inside his chest again. The men chasing her tonight were not ordinary criminals. He already recognized the symbol tattooed on one of their necks during the pursuit earlier. They belonged to an organization Adrian hated more than anything else. The same people responsible for destroying Chloe’s past. His eyes darkened dangerously. If they found her again now… There would be war. The car finally slowed down as large black gates appeared ahead beneath the rain. Armed guards immediately stepped aside the moment they recognized Adrian’s vehicle, allowing the car to enter a massive private estate hidden far from the city lights. Chloe stared outside the window in complete shock as the enormous mansion came into view. The place looked less like a home and more like a fortress. Guards stood everywhere. Security lights covered every corner. Luxury mixed dangerously with power. Chloe looked back at Adrian nervously. “Where are we?” Adrian’s expression remained cold. “My home,” he answered simply. The car stopped completely. Before Chloe could react properly, Adrian suddenly leaned slightly closer toward her again. His grey eyes locked onto hers with dangerous intensity while rain continued crashing against the windows around them. And then he said the one thing that made her heart stop. “You’re safe now.” But somehow… The way Adrian Knight looked at her made safety feel far more dangerous than fear itself. 🔥 TBC…
