Chloe stood silently in the middle of the luxurious bedroom, her eyes wandering around the massive space once again. Everything inside the room looked like something taken from a billionaire's dream. The sparkling chandelier hanging above reflected warm golden lights across the marble floor, while the expensive furniture gave the room an elegant and sophisticated appearance. Despite the beauty surrounding her, she couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling settling heavily inside her chest. The softness of the bed, the warmth of the room, and the expensive clothes provided for her should have made her feel comfortable, but instead, she felt trapped. The events of the previous night kept replaying repeatedly in her mind, making it impossible for her to relax completely.
She slowly walked toward the large glass window and looked outside. The rain had stopped, but dark clouds still covered the sky. Armed guards moved around the estate below, patrolling every corner of the mansion grounds. The sight only reminded her that this wasn't an ordinary home. No normal billionaire surrounded himself with this much security. The mansion felt more like a fortress than a residence. Every exit seemed protected. Every pathway seemed monitored. Chloe wrapped her arms around herself and sighed deeply. She didn't know whether she was being protected or imprisoned. The uncertainty was becoming exhausting, and the worst part was that nobody seemed willing to tell her the truth.
Her thoughts immediately returned to Adrian Knight. Ever since she met him, nothing had made sense anymore. His intense gaze, his strange protectiveness, and the way he constantly looked at her as though she were someone important unsettled her deeply. She had never met him before—or at least that was what she believed. Yet Adrian behaved as if her existence alone carried meaning in his life. The memory of his eyes staring at her inside the car surfaced again. There had been shock in them. Relief. Pain. Emotions that didn't belong in the eyes of a stranger. Chloe closed her eyes briefly, trying to make sense of everything, but the questions only multiplied inside her head.
A soft knock suddenly interrupted her thoughts. Before she could respond, the bedroom door opened slowly, and Adrian stepped inside. Chloe immediately turned around, her heartbeat quickening unexpectedly. He looked different from earlier. The expensive suit was gone, replaced by a black shirt and matching trousers. The sleeves of his shirt were folded neatly around his forearms, exposing strong muscles and faint traces of dark tattoos beneath the fabric. Somehow, the simpler clothing made him look even more intimidating. The moment his eyes landed on her, the atmosphere inside the room shifted. It felt as though all the air had disappeared, leaving only the two of them standing there.
"You should be resting," Adrian said calmly, his deep voice breaking the silence.
Chloe frowned immediately. "You entered without permission."
A faint look of amusement flashed across Adrian's face before disappearing just as quickly. He closed the door behind him and slipped his hands into his pockets. "This is my house."
"That doesn't give you the right to walk into my room whenever you want," Chloe replied firmly. She refused to let him intimidate her, even though every instinct inside her warned her to be careful around him. Adrian remained silent for a few moments, studying her face as though searching for something hidden beneath her expression. His gaze alone was enough to make her nervous, yet she refused to look away.
"You are under my protection," Adrian finally said.
The statement immediately irritated her. "I didn't ask for protection."
"No," Adrian replied quietly. "You didn't."
His answer only frustrated her more. Everything about him was infuriating. He spoke like a man who had already decided how things would be without bothering to ask anyone else's opinion. Chloe folded her arms tightly across her chest and stared at him. The confidence in his posture, the calmness in his voice, and the certainty behind every word he spoke made it clear that Adrian Knight wasn't used to being questioned.
Unfortunately for him, Chloe wasn't willing to stay silent.
"You keep saying I'm safe here, but you refuse to explain anything," she said. "You act like you know exactly what's happening, yet every time I ask a question, you avoid answering.
Why?"
Adrian's expression darkened slightly. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The tension between them grew stronger with every passing second. Chloe could practically feel the weight of his gaze pressing against her. When he finally spoke, his voice sounded lower than before.
"Because there are things you are not ready to know."
Chloe let out a short laugh filled with disbelief.
"And who decided that?"
"I did."
The confidence in his response made her shake her head. "You really think you can control everything, don't you?"
Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "I control what threatens me."
His answer sent an unexpected chill down her spine. Something about the way he said it felt dangerous. There was hidden meaning behind those words, something deeper than he was willing to reveal. Chloe looked away briefly, trying to calm her nerves. Every conversation with Adrian felt like walking through a maze filled with unanswered questions. The more she spoke to him, the more mysterious he became.
"What happened last night wasn't random," Adrian continued quietly. "The men chasing you weren't ordinary criminals. They weren't trying to rob you. They wanted you."
Fear instantly returned to Chloe's chest. She swallowed hard and looked at him again. "Why?"
Adrian's jaw tightened slightly. "That's what I'm trying to find out."
The answer did little to comfort her. Instead, it created even more confusion. If Adrian truly didn't know why people wanted her, then why was he so determined to protect her? Why was he risking himself for someone he barely knew? None of it made sense. Chloe slowly walked toward the window again, staring out at the guards below.
"This place feels like a prison," she admitted softly.
Adrian stepped closer, stopping only a few feet away from her. "It's not a prison."
"It certainly doesn't feel like freedom."
His eyes remained fixed on her. "Freedom won't matter if you're dead."
The seriousness in his voice made her fall silent. Adrian wasn't joking. He genuinely believed she was in danger. The realization made her stomach twist uneasily. She wanted to dismiss his warnings, but deep down she knew he wasn't lying. Whatever was happening around her was real. The fear. The chase. The danger. All of it was real.
"Why do you care so much?" Chloe asked quietly. "Why are you doing all this for me?"
For the first time, Adrian hesitated. The silence that followed felt heavier than anything else. His expression changed slightly, revealing a glimpse of something hidden beneath his usual calmness. Pain. Regret. Longing. Emotions that didn't belong on the face of a man like him.
Chloe lowered her eyes briefly, but her mind refused to settle. Every instinct told her that Adrian was hiding something important. It wasn't just the way he answered her questions. It was the way he looked at her whenever he thought she wasn't paying attention. There was familiarity in his eyes, something that couldn't be explained by simple concern. She had only known him for a few hours, yet Adrian behaved as though she had been a part of his life for years. The thought should have frightened her completely, but instead it sparked an uncomfortable curiosity. She wanted answers, yet every answer seemed to be locked behind the walls Adrian had built around himself.
Meanwhile, Adrian remained standing a few feet away from her, his expression carefully controlled. On the outside, he looked calm and unaffected, but inside, a storm was raging. Seeing Chloe alive again felt like a cruel trick played by fate. For years, he had carried the memory of losing her. For years, he had searched for answers, buried his grief beneath power and violence, and convinced himself that she was gone forever. Yet here she was, standing only a few feet away from him. Breathing. Talking. Looking at him with those same eyes that once followed him everywhere.
The difference was that she no longer remembered him, and that reality hurt more than he cared to admit.
Neither of them spoke for several moments. The silence wasn't awkward, but heavy. Chloe could feel the tension lingering between them, growing stronger with every second. She didn't understand why being around Adrian affected her so much. He should have been just another stranger. Instead, every conversation with him left her feeling unsettled. There was something about his presence that pulled her attention no matter how hard she tried to resist it. Perhaps it was the mystery surrounding him. Or perhaps it was
the strange feeling that her life had somehow been connected to.
