Third Person POV
[Later that Day]
Nick’s parents came home around 2 in the afternoon. Nick and Emily came out of his room to greet his parents in the living room. He texted them earlier saying they needed to talk about something serious when they got back home. “What is this about? Please don’t tell us we are going to be grandparents, you’re too young to have babies right now.” Pamela, Nick’s mom stated. Nick and Emily burst out laughing. “No mom, we aren’t telling you that we are pregnant, we aren’t even dating. Just really close friends.” Pamela and Zachary, Nick’s dad both let out a big sigh. “I was wondering if possibly it would be okay for Emily to move in and live with us?” Nick asked cautiously. Nick’s mother and father gave a look to each other before answering. “Why does she need to move in? She lives right next to us.” Nick’s father answered first. “I don’t want her staying at her house anymore. She can’t. I won’t let her. We can figure out money if we need it. Emily has a job she goes to every day after school, if needed she can help us out if you’d like her to.” Nick said while looking at Emily. Emily agreed to Nick’s statement. “What aren’t you telling us? Why don’t you want her going back home?” His mother questioned this time. Nick hesitated and did not want to say anything about Emily’s bruises. He looked at Emily. “Do you mind showing them? I don’t want you to be uncomfortable” Nick asked. “Show us what?” His parents started to become impatient at this point. Emily nodded and blew out a big breath. She lifted up her shirt slowly to reveal the bruises on her body. “Oh! Honey. What happened?” Pamela rushed towards Emily to check out her body. “My family treats me like I am their slave. Last night I heard someone rushing around our house and I went upstairs. My brother caught me and gave me my punishment. I’m not allowed upstairs unless I’m told.” Emily had tears forming in her eyes getting ready to fall.
After everyone sat down together they all made a plan to get Emily out of her house. They agreed for her to stay with them. She doesn’t have to pay them anything just as long as she keeps her grades up. She can stay. She knows she can keep her grades up. That’s all she’s ever looked forward to. Being able to keep her grades up meant she’d be able to go to a college far away from home.
Later that night Emily told Nick about all of her savings she needs to get. She doesn’t care about anything else, but she needs her savings back. They made a plan for later that night waiting for every one to fall asleep. She knew what time her family went to bed. It was like a hamster running on its wheel, no where to go except full circle.
It was 1am, go time. Nick retrieved the step stool he used the other night. They gathered some boxes from their move and placed them outside her window. Nick lifted the window and blinds carefully not making any sound and stepped through first before helping Emily through with the boxes. Emily grabbed her work clothes and shoved them in the box first and then her savings. She placed more clothes on top so the money wouldn’t make any sound when climbing back out. They grabbed all of her belongings. She didn’t have much so it was an easy pack for them. After that Nick climbed back out and asked Emily to hand him boxes.
They successfully got everything back into Nick’s house without making any noise. Her door was still locked and she knew they wouldn’t be checking on her anytime soon. Emily didn’t unpack anything considering they had school in the morning and they needed to get to bed. She laid down in the spare room at Nick’s house and went to bed. “This is my new start..” she thought before drifting off to her slumber.
It was 4:30am, she always gets up at this time. Today though, today is different. She doesn’t have to get up and make breakfast for everyone along with dinner. This is a new start for her. She laid in bed and thought, “maybe I should make everyone breakfast. I know it’s early, but I want to show them I appreciate what they are doing for me.” She pondered on that thought for a little and chose to get up, take a shower, get ready for her day, and start on breakfast.
She made biscuits and gravy for everyone with a side dish of fruits containing strawberries, grapes, kiwi, and cantaloupe. When breakfast was finished she cleaned up after herself and made everyone coffee to go along with it. “What are you doing?” Nick asked sleepily startling her in place. “Ah!, I made everyone breakfast and coffee.” She responded holding her chest. “You don’t have to do that anymore Em.” Nick spoke coming towards her to comfort and calm her down. “I know, I just thought I could show you how much I appreciate all of for you for letting me stay. Besides I was up already since I’m used to doing it for my family.” She said finally accepting his comfort. He gave her a nickname and she smiled while holding him. She has never been given a nickname before.
When breakfast was finished Nick got ready and sauntered over towards the spare room what is now Emily’s room. He knocked “come in” she replied. He opened the door to see her covering up her bruising with cover up. “When would you like to leave?” He asked while standing in the doorway admiring what she is doing. He can’t get enough of her. He just wants her to be his already, but doesn’t want to scare her away. Being friends will just have to do for now. “We can leave any time really, I like leaving early to miss everyone at home, but since I’m here it’s whatever you decide.” She responded continuing her masterpiece she’s done everyday for years.
When they get to school, they stay in the parking lot. “Are you okay?” Nick breaks the silence first. “Yeah, just different and I don’t know how to feel. Thank you for taking me in. You don’t understand how much it means to me.” Emily responded while looking out the window. “How am I going to face my sister here? Eventually they’ll know I’m not there with breakfast and dinner not being made.” She continued saying. “We do this together. I’m not going to leave you. I’ll be by your side the entire time. If she says something I’ll back you up.” Nick said putting his hand on hers. She looked over with a small smile. “You won’t leave me?” She questioned. “No, I won’t leave you. I’m here always.” He smiled back and squeezed her hand reassuring her he’s not going anywhere.
Eventually it was time for them to go inside. They got out of the car and grabbed their bags. Nick held his hand out for her to take. Emily took it and they walked towards the building together hand in hand. They were ready to conquer anything that comes their way. He’s not planning on going anywhere without her by his side.
