Chapter 15:

1298 Words
Third Person POV Nick dropped Emily off at work and as she was walking in Jason spotted her on his way home from being with his friends all day. “What does this girl think she’s doing?” Jason muttered as he passed by slowly before making a u-turn and pulled up against the curb. He puts the car in park and turns the ignition off before walking in. Jason walks into the little diner he always passes by. The first thing he spots is Emily waiting tables with a smile. She has the most beautiful smile he’s ever seen. He thinks to himself. A hostess sees he’s waiting and asks how many for his party tonight. He was startled a bit. “Just one, thank you.” He responds. He’s taken to a table in Emily’s section. “Hello, welcome to Sammy’s, what can I get you star..” Emily looks up and stops in her tracks stunned seeing her brother’s best friend. “Well hello Emily, fancy seeing you here” Jason smirks as he knows he just caught her red handed. “Aren’t you suppose to be tutoring school kids after school? I don’t think your family will be too happy to know you’ve been lying to them all these years.” He continues. Emily snaps out of her stun. “Please, don’t tell them, I needed this job. You know how they treat me. I can’t stay there after high school I need to go and never come back. This is the only way I can.” She pleaded to him. “Oh, don’t worry I won’t tell anyone. I like you to much to do that. I know David and I know what he’d do to you if I ever told him. He may not say that he beats you, but all of us can see it any time we come over.” He says sadly to her. “Thank you..anyway what can I get for you tonight?” She says softly. “I will just take a coke if that’s okay.” She nods and says she’ll be right back with his drink while turning away. While he is waiting for his drink he watches as Emily tends to her other tables with their food orders. He’s so lost in how she moves. He’s always had a thing for her, but can’t show it since he’s friends with her brother. He’s always wanted to save her, but he doesn’t know how. He can never stand up for her and he has a feeling David knows he likes her a little. As he is lost in thought Emily comes back with his drink on her tray. “Here’s your coke, can I get you anything to eat or are you still looking at the menu?” She asks while sitting down the coke. “No, I’m okay. I do want to know if I can take you out sometime? I mean, if you want to that is.” He asks with a smile. “As much as I’d like to..I can’t. You know my family and if David ever caught wind of us being around each other do you know what he’d do to me?” She says. Jason lost his happiness, but wasn’t mad he understood. “Can I at least drive you home after your shift is over? I know you walk everywhere and figured it’d be nice for a change.” He responded. “Again, I can’t risk it. I already have someone taking me home tonight though. I’m sorry I just can’t risk anything with you or anyone else associated with my family. They already hate me enough.” She is shaking so much with anxiety but stands her ground. “Thank you for the offer though. I appreciate it.” She continued before walking away to go to another table that was placed in her section. Jason leaves after paying and leaves a generous tip even though he only ordered a drink and left a note saying “I know you may think poorly of me for being your brother’s friends, but I want you to know I do stand up for you when talks bad about you. I hope sometime in the future you will let me take you out when no one is around. I feel like we’d have fun and I’d love to get to know you more. If you ever need anything just call or text me. My number is in the back.” Emily is finally able to clean all of her tables after tending her last table for the night. Tonight seemed to be busier than a normal Monday evening, but she doesn’t mind. She gets to the table Jason was sitting at earlier and sees the note he left for her. She was surprised to find out that he stands up for her, but she’s still guarding herself from him. She’ll put his number in her phone as a just in case, but she doesn’t think she’ll need it anytime soon. It’s the end of the night and she’s cleaned and restocked everything she’s needed to before clearing off her tips from the system to do her bank. She sees how big of a tip he left her and thinks to herself that needs to thank him later. He just helped her move forward toward her car and not just a little, but by a lot. She gets all of her tables cleared from the system and goes to do her bank. Emily steps outside noticing Nick hasn’t showed up yet and checks her phone for the time. She still has 10 minutes until she was originally supposed to be off and she sends a quick text to Nick letting him know she’s off if he still wanted to pick her up. He messages back that he’ll be there in 5 minutes and to just wait inside until he gets there. She turns around to head back inside when she hears someone calling her name. She stopped and listened just to make sure she isn’t just hearing things. “Emily!” She hears it again. “It’s me Jason, I waited until you were off to talk. I thought you had a ride home.” He stated. “I do, I just got off earlier than he was expecting me to.” She said feeling nervous as she’s never spoken to him besides from today. “Well I’m here why don’t I take you home?” He questioned. “I already told you no, I can’t be seen with you or I’ll be in trouble. I already have enough to deal with, but I was going to text you later saying thank you for what you left. You only got a drink and I was planning on just paying it myself, but you asked to pay before I could.” She responded politely. “Okay, well it was nice talking to you and I hope to hear from you soon. I’d really like to hangout with you one of these days.” He said while heading back to his vehicle. “Have a goodnight Jason.” She told him. “You as well Emily.” He said while getting in his car and driving off. Nick picked her up and asked how her shift was. She told him everything that happened with Jason at the diner and then her encounter while waiting for him to pick her up. “Do you plan on hanging out with him?” Nick asked cautiously hoping she says no. “No I don’t, he’s my brother’s best friend I can’t risk it.” She said. He silently cheers to himself. He still has a chance.
