Aurora's POV
“I believe someone caused it.”
I looked straight ahead. Someone wants me dead. I turned to look at Elena, she was listening attentively.
“Who?”
Maybe I shouldn't have asked. I wasn't sure I was prepared to know, but I asked anyway.
He looked away like he wasn't supposed to talk.
“I don't know.”
“The police report said the driver died at the scene, but when I looked into it, he just disappeared.”
“Who did it? I asked again, looking straight into his eyes, daring him to lie.
Elena held my hand in hers. I barely felt it.
“I don't know”
I studied his face.
“You do.”
He didn't give a reply, instead he looked away.
“Collins?”
He still didn't look at me.
“I know who was involved,” he finally said.
The restaurant felt too quiet once again. I could hear the chirping of the birds through the window.
“Who, Collins?”
He looked at me, and I could swear I saw fear in his eyes.
“I can't say. I can't tell you everything yet.”
I almost stood. He was hiding something extremely dangerous.
“Then why did you bring me here?”
“Because I needed you to know before you trusted the wrong person.”
My eyes were pinned on him, he avoided my eyes.
“Who am I supposed to trust?”
Collins hesitated, then his face hardened.
“They wanted you dead.”
My breathing fastened.
Dead? Why? Was it him again?
I stared at him, every muscle in my body rigid.
“What exactly are you trying to tell me?”
He leaned closer.
“The accident that everyone believed killed Aurora Hayes wasn't meant to end with you surviving.”
He paused.
“Someone ordered it.”
I think I stopped breathing there.
“Who is the person?”
He looked towards the entrance before answering.
“I can't tell you here.”
“Then where? You made me come all the way, and you still can't tell me here?”
“It's to protect you.”
“I can protect myself!”
“Aurora…”
I gave him an irritated look. Something about his story didn't sit right with me.
“Ms Blake”
“I'm sorry”
“You dragged me here, told me someone tried to kill me, and now you're telling me you can't tell me who did it?”
“I told you because I can't keep watching you walk into danger without knowing.”
“What danger?”
His gaze shifted toward the direction of the Ashford headquarters.
“Your return.”
I frowned.
“What about it? Nobody knows who I am… except you.”
“Everyone believed Aurora Hayes died five years ago. The people responsible believed it too.”
I stared at him.
“So?”
“So your survival wasn't meant to happen.”
“I spent years trying to find out what happened that night.”
“And?”
“I found a name.”
I held my breath. The only sound I could hear was his silence.
“Whose?”
He looked at me.
“Nelson. My uncle.”
Everything inside me went quiet. Nelson Ashford, this man again. I was hoping it wouldn't be him.
After causing my mother's death, framing my father, which led him to commit suicide, marrying me to his family that I detested the most. He still wants me dead?
My inside twisted. I will f*****g kill him!
“I saw the records.” Collins continued.
My brows pulled together.
“What records?”
“I saw the payment.”
I went still.
“What payment?”
Collins reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. He placed it on the table between us, and I just stared at it.
“What is that?”
I reached to take it, but before I could unfold it, Collins caught my wrist.
“Don't.”
I looked at his hand, and he immediately let go.
“Why?”
“Once you see it, you can't pretend you don't know.”
I pulled the paper toward me.
“I've been pretending for five years.”
I unfolded it.
My eyes moved across the page, and I saw my name, a transaction and a date and the date of the accident.
I looked at Collins and asked, “Where did you get this?
“From someone who was there that night.”
“Who?”
He lowered his voice.
“He's dead.”
****
The next morning when I walked into my office, I saw Elena pacing beside my desk. She was holding a file.
“You are late.”
I dropped my handbag on the desk and pulled out the chair.
“Good morning to you too.”
I tried to joke, but she didn't smile.
“What's wrong?”
“We have a problem.”
“What kind?”
She handed the file to me, and I opened it to look at it.
“Ashford Group changed the terms.”
“They can't.”
“They did”
I scanned the document, and I saw it. The distribution agreement was changed, and there was one clause that was not in the original proposal.
Access to Blake's Biotech Research Facility.
I looked up immediately.
“They want access to my laboratories?”
Those sneaky bastards.
“They must be dreaming.”
“Who approved this?”
“No one.”
I closed the file.
“Then remove it.”
“I tried.”
“And?”
“They said the new terms were signed by Damian Ashford.”
I curled my hand into a fist.
“Call him.”
Elena reached for her phone, but before she could dial his number, someone knocked on my office door.
“Come in.”
An employee came to view.
“Mr Collins Ashford is here.”
I looked confused.
“Let him in.”
“What are you doing here?”
He looked at Elena.
“Can we speak privately?”
“I don't think so.”
His eyes returned to me.
“Aurora…”
“Whatever you have to say, say it in front of her.”
He hesitated, then he placed an envelope on my desk.
I looked at the envelope curiously.
“What is that?”
“Something you need to see.”
I picked it up and opened it. Elena moved closer to also see what was in it.
The first photograph made my stomach drop, it was a picture of my car. The same car from five years ago. Apparently, the photograph had been taken before the accident. I turned to the next one. The driver's side, then the brake part. My breathing quickened.
“Where did you get these?”
He looked at me.
“From the man who worked on your car before the accident.”
I stared at him suspiciously.
“You said he was dead.”
“He is.”
“Then how did you get these?”
“I made someone hack into his phone.”
I looked at the final photograph, a man was standing beside my car.
I pointed at him and asked, “Who is he?”
“Nelson's driver.”
I looked down at the photograph again and sighed. I had believed that I was a victim of a terrible accident that was a blessing in disguise because it made me escape from the Ashford.
But they have wanted me dead all along.
I looked up at Collins.
“I would thank you, but I know you aren't doing this just because you feel sorry for me.”
“What do you want?”
I went straight to the point.
“We want the same thing.”
“And you think you know what I want?”
“Sure.”
“We want revenge.”
