The Newbie Secretary

Raphael’s POV

“Jess, I already prepared our breakfast, come on and join me!” I energetically called Jess who is watching an early news in the television, I woke up early because I am so excited to work here in Manila, I can’t stop my mood to lighten up every time I think that I can finally provide a good life for my family.

“What time did you woke up, Ralph?” Jess asked while walking towards the dining table.

“5 am, why?” I answered her with a broad smile in my face.

“You must be really eager to take the job, huh?”

“Of course, I am! I am sure that I can do all the work there, Jess!” I responded with a high energy.

“Why did I ever bother to ask? You’re eagerness is already written all over your face.” She said and laughed.

“That is why you have to hurry up and get dressed, it’s already 6:30, I don’t want to be late in applying.”

“Fine, fine. I will hurry up now!”

“Is this the building, Jess?” I nervously asked Jess as she stopped her car in front of a 15th floor building, gosh, this is so tall, I have never seen a building like this in a countryside!

“Yes, it is. I am just showing you the front view of the building but do not get out of the car yet, we have to park this in the parking lot.” Jess reminded me and I just mumble a yes for a response.

As soon as we reach the underground parking lot, Jess parked her car and we went to the entrance of the building together, Jess showed her employee ID to one of the security guards and told them that I am an applicant. Jess wears a navy suit along with a while blouse underneath it, and a skirt that is paired with a high heels black shoes. While, I wear a white polo with a tie and a black coat covering it. I paired it with a slacks and a newly waxed black shoes.  

After a minute, we reached the door of an elevator and waited for it to open.

“Morning, Jess” a random guy come out of the elevator as it opens.

“Hey, Leo, good morning.” Jess responded with a good mood.

“A new applicant?” The guy whom Jess called Leo asked, referring to me.

“Yes, he is Raphael.”

“Nice meeting you, Raphael, good luck for the application.” He smiled and playfully winked at me.

I just bowed my head in response, why the fudge did he wink at me?

“I’ll get going now, Jess. Have a nice day!” He finally walked pass us and we entered the elevator.

She pressed the button for the 5th floor.

“That’s Leonardo Sanchez, we often call him Leo, he is nice and easy going. Do not worry, he is very approachable so he would not mind if you will ask him anything.” Jess explained as she saw my confused expression.

“But, why does he have to wink at me?”

Jess laughed, “Don’t worry about it, it’s just his way of welcoming you.”

“Whatever, Jess.”

"I belong to the human resource department, my office is in the 5th floor, but given that you're going to apply as a secretary, your office will be in the 15th floor right outside the office of the CEO“ Jess told me as the elevator started to go up.

"Wait- what do you mean?" That is the vacant position that you're talking about? Being the secretary of the CEO?" I asked, shocked and nervousness suddenly hits me. I do not have any idea that I am applying for that position, I doubt I am going to get hired, I mean I don't have any experience at office work at all.

"Haha, I'm just kidding, Ralph. Don't be too nervous."

"Why are you not telling me about the position that I’m applying for?" I began to question her.

"Well, you didn't ask about it, so I didn't bother to tell you. I'm sorry, my friend." She said while wearing an expression that is meant to annoy me.

"Whatever, Jess. So tell me about the position."

"The human resource department is lacking for personnel for front desk receptionist, so I recommended you because I know that you are really fitted for the job. I mean, you have a well-developed communication skills so I know that it will be an easy job for you. All you have to do is to welcome the guests or the potential visitors at the front desk then answer their questions.”

I smiled as I heard it. “Thank you for recommending me, Jess” I hugged her.

I heard her giggle, we climb out of the elevator as soon as it opens.

I saw a front desk at the front of the right corner of the elevator.

“See that? That’s where you are going to work.” Jess pointed the front desk. I saw a tall and gorgeous woman sitting in a desk chair.

“Oh, that’s Clarise, she also works for the HR department just like me, but she’s just filling up as the front desk receptionist because we don’t have anyone to fill for the job right now, that’s why you’re going to apply.” Jess explained as she saw me looking at the woman sitting by the front desk.

After a moment, Jess entered an office and I notice that she is talking with a woman in her 50’s inside. Jess came out and called me.

“Ralph, she’s going to interview you for the job. Just be confident and not be nervous.” She patted my shoulder.

I entered the office and she greeted me with a smile, she seems nice.

“Hi ma’am, good morning.” I greeted her.

“Hi, You’re name is Raphael Guzman, right?”

“Yes, ma’am.” I answered, a bit nervous.

“I am Rachael Montelco, Jess recommends you for the receptionist position, so I am expecting that you’ll be a valuable employee for the company just like her. But first, Mr. Guzman, why do you want to apply for the job?”

I already prepared myself for this kind of question so I already know how to answer. I was halfway in opening my mouth when a guy suddenly entered the office.

Ma’am Rachael looks at him and stands, she bowed her head and greeted the man.

“Good morning sir, what brings you by my office?” she asked the guy.

I looked at the guy and he seems so familiar, he do not notice me because his attention is too focused with Ma’am Rachael. He seems annoyed and impatient.

“Haven’t I told you that I needed a new secretary?” he asked impatiently.

“Yes, sir. But the HR department is still in the process of hiring one.” She answered calmly.

I stared at the guy because he really seems familiar.

“Well, make sure to hire someone that is really eligible for the job, and make it fast, I need a new secretary for fudge’s sake.” He is already making his way to leave the office when he unexpectedly look at me, maybe he felt that I was staring at him.

He looks at me as if studying me, “Who is this guy, Mrs. Montelco?” he asked without turning his gaze away from me.

“A new employee as the front desk receptionist.”

“A new employee? Hire him as my secretary.” I was startled upon hearing those words. Gosh, who is this guy? He acts like a CEO.

“But, sir, he doesn’t have enough experiences for office works yet.” She explained.

Ah, I remembered it! This guy! That’s why he looks so familiar, he is the arrogant guy that I have asked for directions, huh, I can’t believe we met again!

“No buts, Mrs. Montelco, I am in urgent need for a secretary right now.” He exclaimed and leave the office.

I heard Ma’am Rachael sighs like she’s already exhausted with this early hour.

“Ma’am, may I ask who is he?” I gently asked her, she looks stressed.

She sighs again before answering me.

“He is the CEO.”

My shoulders fell. Oh no. I just happened to scold a CEO and now I have to work as his secretary, what a great experience. Is he going to get his revenge on me? Argh!
