Chirp! Chirp! (Crickets Chirping) Aowww! Aowww! (Distance howling) Pitch black! Goddamn cold! I could not see anything, not even a single object around me. I tried to move and realized my hands and legs were tied up behind my back. I figured that I was blindfolded as well, lying on a room’s cold floor in the middle of nowhere. I could smell iron rust, old woods and I could hear insect noises, I became more frightened and begged for help ‘Hello, is anybody there?’, I cried but no one responded. ‘Please! somebody help me out, I am kidnapped’. one month back. That was the last exam of my nursing program, I was rushing to the college in my bicycle. Markel, who was a best friend of Linda and he was already into a lot of drug activities in the town, rushed towards me from somewhere. He was the one who lured Linda into all Mafia stuff. He abruptly stood in front of my cycle, stopped me, and said, ‘Stop, stop Nora, can you do me a favor?’. I usually don’t talk to Markel and I sneered, ‘No, I am already late to my exam’, but he did not even listen to me and put a small bag inside my college bag. ‘Take it to your college, wait for me at the gates, I will go there and collect it. Go, go fast’, he said this in a hurry, pushed my bicycle from behind, and started running into the busy street. What the hell? What is it? What is inside the bag? I did not have any choice rather than taking the bag with me because already I was late for my exam, so I started pedaling so hard and reached my college. As soon as I reached my college gates, Markel and two other men got out of a car and approached me. I just stood as Markel took the bag. I did not stand there after that, I rushed to my exam hall. After the exam, everyone was cheering and celebrating. Few were giving goodbye hugs, and few were pouring inks on others, few were chasing others and playing. I did not have many friends in college since I was so studious, people always avoid me most of the time. I went to my lecturer’s room to say goodbye. As soon as I came out from her room, a bucket full of blue color paint mixed with water was poured on me by some random girls. I was completely soaked on it. The girls who spilled the colored water laughed at me so loudly. I clenched my fist and rushed to the washroom, washed my face, but still, I could see the light blue color on my face. With a gloomy blue face, I was driving back home in my bicycle, I could see two men followed me in a bike. I was terrified to see them. They did not seem like good men. I started pedaling as fast as I can, after a few minutes, I could not see them and so I thought I lost them. But suddenly, they come from somewhere, pushed me so hard and I fell on the ground. When I stood up rubbing the dust on my skirt and on my elbows, I saw four to five men were approaching me. I saw them and started running in haste. I was running, running, and still running. I turned back to see whether they were still chasing me, the men did not stop chasing me. I was startled as I got bumped on someone who was standing in front of me. Oh s**t, I saw a boy, who was of my age, wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans. When I see around, I saw a few other boys playing football on the street. All were stopped playing and watching me in confusion. I said in a panic voice as I was breathing heavily, ‘Please, Please, help me, they are chasing me’, I had no idea why I asked help to the street players. The boy with the red t-shirt held my wrist and started running. I ran with him. Other boys were distracting the men who were chasing me by not giving them the way or throwing stones and the objects around. The red t-shirt boy rushed to a small house and locked us inside. We were breathing heavily since we ran for a long distance. ‘Jose’, he looked at me and said his name. ‘Nora’, I was still breathing heavily. ‘Why are they chasing you?’ ‘I have no idea’ ‘Do you know who those people are?’ ‘No’, I shook my head. ‘They are Antonio’s men’ ‘What the f**k?’, my eyes were wide opened, and I looked at him in a gaze. Antonio was a big Mafia gang’s leader in Albarracín, and he was a dangerous man. I knew for sure I did nothing. I cursed Markel for involving me in the danger. I know there was something do to with the bag in the morning. I was fully terrified and looked down in agitation. Jose moved towards me, ‘Don’t worry. I am here’. That was the first time a boy said something so nice to me. I felt like I had already fallen for Jose. I stood in silence with a timid smile on my lips, and Jose moved so close to me, tilted his head as if he was going to kiss me. With a surprised eye, shy red cheeks, I flinched. Suddenly, a big sound of slam, someone made the door wide open. I saw a lot of men in furious eyes. The men moved slowly, and a man came from the crowd. f**k! It was Antonio, who was in his mid of the ’50s. My whole body was shivering. Jose held my hand and showed another hand to Antonio to stop, ‘Dad, stop, she is innocent’ What the hell? Dad? Is Jose Antonio’s son? ‘She helped them to transport the drugs’, Antonio roared at Jose. ‘I know but she is innocent. Let’s leave her. I did not call you to kill her’, Jose replied. I was terrified to hear that and shook my hand abruptly which Jose was holding. ‘What the hell, did you call him?’, I growled at Jose. ‘I will take care. You leave’, Antonio said this in a cold voice to Jose. Jose gave me a gentle look, I did not look at him but was praying, ‘Please don’t leave. Please don’t leave’ But he left. Antonio approached me and said, ‘I will not kill you, but you have to do something’ I saw him in fear and almost sweated. He handed me a bag, ‘here is some packed cocaine and you have to sell this in front of your college. Police knew all my men and we were getting caught easily these days. So, I wanted you to sell the drugs and give the money back to me every day’ At first, I shook my head and other men started taking revolver and guns outside their pockets. I was so frightened and agreed to do it. I dreamt of going to a big town and earning a lot. But here I was selling drugs. For the next two days, I sold drugs in front of my college. I heard, ‘What the hell are you doing?’. I turned my face to see and It was Jose. I did not even want to see his face. Looking away, I was standing there in silence. ‘Stop this, come with me. I will tell my father’ ‘Leave me alone. I don’t want to see you’, I could not help but shout at him and he looked at me in a gaze. I liked him at first sight, but he betrayed me. I was so mad at him. He tried to convince me for some time, but I refused, and he left the place. I was suddenly pushed by someone and I even was about to fell on the ground. ‘What the f**k are you doing?’ It was Linda. ‘Why do you care all of a sudden? It’s all because of you’ ‘Because of me? What are you talking about?’ ‘Yes, your friend Markel made me do this’ She gritted her teeth, grabbed my wrist so tightly, and took me to Markel. She started hitting Markel so badly. ‘Tell me everything. Why the hell she was selling drugs at the college?’, she hit Markel so hard and asked. Markel spat everything about the bag, and I continued about Antonio’s threat. Linda snatched my bag, where few of Antonio’s drugs and some money of sold drugs were there. ‘You go home. I will come in some time.’, Linda said to me. ‘you know about Antonio. He is’ before even I finished, she said, ‘leave, I will take care.’ It really hurts when someone says Leave. Linda was so different that day. She looked like she cared for me. I realized that I was so wrong about Linda. Whenever I think about Linda, I remember her teasing me for being so nerd. But that I felt that I was loved by her and probably she does not know to express her love, or this was her way of expressing love. I left the place. … At night Linda and Sister Audrey were speaking at sister Audrey’s office. Elena told me this and asked me to go to sister Audrey’s office. ‘Hi Nora, I have arranged a job for you at Bilbao. You should join in 10 days’, sister Audrey said this smiling at me. I just nodded. ‘Nora, it is not safe for you to be here. So, you leave this town as soon as possible’, I nodded softly and hugged Linda for the first time. She smiled looking at me tenderly. I never saw Linda in this perspective like a caring sister, one thing I understood was different people show their love differently. All we have to do was give them some time. I had got a new job as an ICU patient caretaker in a private hospital in Bilbao with the help of sister Audrey’s recommendation.
