The heavy privacy curtain swept open with a sharp, metallic screech of plastic rings sliding along the overhead track.
Audrey scrambled backward on the empty hospital cot, her hands automatically flying up to shield herself as her phone clattered against the metal frame. Her heart bounded into her throat, choking off the scream that desperately wanted to tear from her lungs.
Standing in the gap of the curtain, bathed in the dim, green-tinted glow of the minor admissions ward, was Julian Cross.
The lawyer hadn't faded back into the safety of Damian Vance’s luxury suite at all. He stood perfectly upright, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the faint light of the corridor behind him, reflecting two blank, gleaming discs where his eyes should have been. His tie was perfectly straight again, completely erasing any trace of Vanessa’s frantic fingers.
"You should really be more careful with your equipment, Nurse Audrey," Julian said. His voice was a calm, clinical baritone that sounded terrifyingly close in the confined space of the cubicle. He reached down with a slow, deliberate movement, picked up her phone from the mattress, and turned it over in his hand.
Audrey froze, her lungs burning as she held her breath. Did he see the screen? Did he see the sniper dot over his own chest?
"Mr. Cross," she managed to choke out, her voice trembling so hard it was barely a whisper. "You... you shouldn't be back here. This is a restricted staff area."
"And Room 304 is a restricted patient area, yet the hallways seem to be quite busy tonight," Julian countered smoothly. He didn't hand the phone back. Instead, his thumb casually traced the edge of the glass screen. "I noticed you watching us by the elevator bay. You look like you've seen a ghost, Audrey. Or perhaps... an executioner?"
A cold sweat broke out across the small of her back. Julian was testing her, probing to see exactly how much she had overheard in the breakroom when he threatened Khalid's life, or how much she had witnessed between him and Vanessa.
"I didn't see anything," Audrey lied, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the rough fabric of the hospital sheets. "I was just doing my rounds. I don't care about your private matters."
Julian stepped deeper into the cubicle, the heavy fabric of the curtain falling shut behind him, trapping them both in the claustrophobic darkness. He leaned down slightly, his shadow completely swallowing her small frame.
"A word of advice from a man who deals in liabilities, Audrey," Julian whispered, his breath cold against the absolute silence of the room. "In this hospital, curiosity doesn't just get you fired. It gets you buried. My employer requires absolute discretion. Dr. Khalid requires absolute control. If you sit on the fence much longer, you are going to get caught in the gears when they start turning."
He dropped the phone back onto her lap. The screen was black, locked automatically by her passcode.
"Keep your eyes on your patients, Nurse," Julian added, turning back toward the curtain. "And pray the morning shift arrives before the floor drops out from under you."
With a swift, silent movement, he slipped through the curtains and vanished into the quiet corridor, leaving Audrey completely alone with her spiraling thoughts.
Her hands shook violently as she grabbed her phone and punched in the passcode. The clock at the top of the screen stared back at her with a brutal, unforgiving clarity.
4:45 AM.
One hour and fifteen minutes left until the stalker's 6:00 AM deadline. One hour and fifteen minutes until either Khalid’s blood painted the walls or Damian Vance died in his bed.
Before she could even process Julian's warning, her phone violently vibrated in her palm, the sudden movement making her gasp.
Bzzz.
It wasn't a text from the shadow. It was an internal hospital alert flashing across the screen in bright, urgent red text:
CRITICAL ALERT: WARD 4 VIP EMERGENCY. ROOM 304. CODE BLUE. ALL AVAILABLE MEDICAL STAFF RESPOND IMMEDIATELY.
Damian Vance.
Audrey’s blood turned to pure ice. The stalker hadn't waited for her choice. Or worse—someone else had already pulled the trigger.
Pushing through the lingering paralysis in her legs, Audrey threw herself out of the cubicle and sprinted back toward the VIP wing, her rubber-soled shoes screaming against the polished linoleum. As she rounded the corner, the hallway was a chaotic blur of flashing blue emergency lights and running staff.
Outside Room 304, Vanessa Khalid was being forcefully held back by two security guards, her screams echoing off the ceiling as she fought against their grip.
"Let me in! You're killing him! Khalid, let me in!" she shrieked, her manicured nails clawing at the guards' uniforms.
Audrey burst through the heavy wooden doors of Room 304 and froze in horror.
The room was in absolute chaos. The silver moonlight was completely drowned out by the harsh, clinical glare of the overhead emergency lights. Damian Vance was thrashing violently on the mattress, his powerful frame convulsing as a low, choked gasp escaped his blue-tinted lips. The heart monitor beside his bed was emitting a flat, continuous, high-pitched wail that tore through the room.
Dr. Khalid was leaning directly over him, his long, surgical fingers aggressively tearing open a fresh syringe while shouting orders at the crash-cart nurse.
"He's in anaphylactic shock! His airway is closing!" Khalid roared, his face tight with an intense, furious energy. "Get the epinephrine, now! Audrey, hold his shoulders down before he snaps the IV line!"
Audrey moved on pure instinct, throwing her weight across Damian's burning, convulsing chest. As she pinned him down, Damian’s icy gray eyes suddenly snapped open. They were bloodshot, unfocused, and filled with a raw, primal panic. His hand shot out from the sheets, his fingers locking around Audrey’s wrist with a crushing, agonizing grip.
He pulled her down closer to his face, his chest heaving as he fought for a single molecule of oxygen.
"He... he did it..." Damian wheezed out, his voice a distorted, dying scrape against her ear. "The... the doctor..."
Audrey’s head snapped up, her amber eyes locking directly onto Dr. Khalid.
The brilliant surgeon was standing at the foot of the bed, the filled syringe held steady in his hand. But he wasn't moving toward the IV line. He was just standing there, his dark, analytical eyes fixed on Damian’s dying face with a cold, unreadable expression. He wasn't rushing to save him. He was watching him fade.
