Chapter 16: The Cost of Secrets

971 Words
The high-pitched ringing in Audrey's ears refused to fade. She lay flat on her stomach against the plush Persian rug, the sharp stabs of shattered window glass digging into her palms as she pushed herself up. The air in Dr. Khalid's office was a thick, choking fog of white smoke and the bitter tang of gunpowder. "Clear! Room is clear! Target has fled through the secondary stairwell!" Deep, authoritative voices boomed through the haze. Two heavily armed private security guards, wearing tactical vests bearing the Vance corporate logo, were moving systematically through the wreckage with their rifles raised. One of them immediately descended on Audrey, his heavy gloved hand gripping her shoulder to help her to her feet. "Are you hit, Nurse? Did he shoot you?" the guard demanded, his eyes scanning her uniform for blood. "No... no, I'm okay," Audrey stammered, her voice hollow and trembling. On pure, desperate instinct, she pulled her arms tight against her chest. Beneath the fabric of her nursing scrubs, hidden completely from the guards' view, she had tightly wedged Dr. Khalid's stolen medical chart and the velvet-lined box of toxic vials. The stalker hadn't managed to rip them away before the flashbang went off. They were still hers. Her foot brushed against something hard on the carpet. She looked down. There, gleaming under the pale silver moonlight spilling through the shattered windows, was the heavy iron key the stalker had dropped when he fled. While the guards were distracted checking the hallway, Audrey dropped to her knees, snatched the key, and shoved it deep into her scrub pocket. "The fire doors," Audrey choked out, coughing as the smoke hit her throat. "The stalker... he said Dr. Khalid's sister is locked in the storage closet down this hallway. And the rest of the staff are trapped in Room 304. We have to unlock the floor." The tactical guards didn't waste a second. Pushing past the shattered office door, they led the way down the dim, unlit corridor of the minor admissions wing. The emergency backup grid was still completely dead, leaving the entire floor looking like an abandoned tomb. Audrey's heart hammered against her ribs as she ran behind them. I'll see you at home. The stalker's final, chilling promise echoed in her mind with every step she took. He didn't just know her name anymore. He knew her life outside the hospital walls. "Over here! I hear something!" the lead guard shouted, pausing in front of a heavy, unmarked metal door labeled Utility Supply 2. From inside, a faint, frantic scratching sound was audible against the steel panel. Audrey stepped forward, her hands shaking violently as she pulled the heavy iron key from her pocket. She shoved it into the mechanical lock, twisting it with all her remaining strength until a loud, heavy click echoed through the hall. The door swung open instantly. Vanessa Khalid tumbled out onto the linoleum floor. Her expensive silk dress was torn at the shoulder, her long dark hair completely tangled, and her face smeared with dirt. But as the guards reached out to assist her, she violently slapped their hands away, her wide, bloodshot eyes scanning the darkness until they landed directly on Audrey. "Where is Julian?" Vanessa gasped, her voice raw and manic as she grabbed Audrey by the front of her uniform, pulling her close. "Where is he? Did that monster take him?" "Mr. Cross is safe, Vanessa. He's locked inside Room 304 with your brother," Audrey explained quickly, trying to gently pry the woman's manicured nails away from her scrubs. "The stalker overrode the electronic system. We need to manually release the main fire doors." Using the same iron key, the security guards sprinted to the end of the corridor, jamming it into the manual override slot beside the massive steel fire barriers. With a loud, grinding screech of heavy machinery, the locks finally disengaged. The massive doors slid backward into the walls, instantly flooding the dark wing with the flashing blue emergency lights of the VIP corridor. The barrier was down. The cage was open. Within seconds, Julian Cross burst through the opening, his matte-black handgun instantly concealed beneath his jacket the moment he saw the security team. His silver-rimmed glasses were perfectly back in place, but the raw, lethal tension in his jaw hadn't faded. "Vanessa," Julian muttered, stepping past the guards. Vanessa didn't care about the staff watching or the security surrounding them. She threw herself into Julian's chest, her fingers burying into his coat as she let out a ragged, uncharacteristic sob. Julian's arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her into the shadows of the alcove, his head dropping low as he whispered fierce, quiet reassurances into her ear. Audrey watched them, her chest aching with the sheer weight of the secrets she was carrying. The toxic, secret lovers were reunited. The billionaire was stable. The stalker was gone. Then, a shadow fell over her. Audrey turned slowly. Dr. Khalid was standing right behind her. The white light of the corridor hit his brilliant, handsome face, illuminating the absolute coldness in his dark eyes. He wasn't looking at his sister. He was looking at Audrey's uniform. His eyes traveled down to her scrub pocket, noticing the slight, heavy bulge where the velvet box of vials was hidden. "You found the key, Nurse Audrey," Khalid said softly, his voice dropping into that dangerously quiet register that made her blood turn to ice. He took a single step closer, his tall, imposing frame blocking out the rest of the hallway. "And I assume... you found exactly what you were looking for in my desk."
